Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1994

Ann started her first vacation rental in 1993 the small town of Arcata, in Northern California. Over the years she expanded to her home on Maui, and another studio in Arcata.
Her daughters, Elly and Mary, have helped her design, furnish, decorate and manage her vacation homes. When not working on their vacation homes they enjoy traveling, hiking, backpacking, and rafting.
Sharing their vacation homes has been a rewarding experience, with interesting and lively guests from all over the world.

Why the Owner Chose Arcata

Arcata is a lively university town, with Humboldt State bringing through great music and theater shows. There are coffee shops with poetry readings and local music, Brio Bakery with fresh baked goodies on plaza, and it's close to Redwood National Park with beautiful hiking trails through the redwoods. If you take scenic highway 299 east, you can enjoy the sunshine on the Trinity River, and whitewater rafting.

The Carriage House is All That & Much More!

When we got to the location, we were met by the owner's house on the street and thought "What a great deal!", and, of course, were taken back to the rental on the back of the property. Since I was "spoiled" by the great big bargain on the street, the porch with the rocking chair made me think I was in rural Appalachia. I was eve looking for the still! I was completely mistaken by the spotless folksy exterior. The house is homey and beautifully decorated. It features large picture windows with sheers and curtains and can be made completely dark at night from inside. Since the house is a "no shoes, please" house, I grew to appreciate that chair over the next several days. The path to the secluded house is rock and very quaint. The cottage is darling! The comfortable chairs and warm atmosphere, together with the spacious full kitchen outfitted with all dishes, pots and pans was helpful, even though I didn't spend too much time there. The bed is great and features a mattress warmer that really helped on the cold nights. Slept like a baby! Plenty of room for a single and is roomy enough for two. The unit is private enough for couples who want to get away for a few days. The heat is great, especially the gas wall unit. The bathroom is quaint and the shower has plenty of water pressure and hot water! The owner even supplied shampoo and conditioner! Though there is a folding luggage rack in the closet, there wasn't a ton of room in the closet with the vacuum cleaner there, so travel light or leave your luggage in the car. I put it behind the chair in the bedroom during my visit. I liked the fact that the neighborhood is quiet, has off-street parking and is walking distance from downtown Arcata (including Los Bagels on I Street!) Warning: If you get mud on your shoes, make sure you take your shoes off because of the beautiful white carpets and oriental rugs. I would definitely go back!

My boyfriend and I rented the Victorian house on the property as well as this adorable cottage for the weekend with several friends. We had a blast. The property is walking distance from town, campus, community forest and more. The Carriage house is cozy but spacious with a nice kitchen. Our favorite part was the lovely porch where we were able to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. Perfect place for a couple wanting some privacy but you still have easy access to downtown. We will be back!
