Ten to fifteen minutes from Kelseyville vineyards, downtown Kelseyville wine-tasting rooms, and the fabulous Saw Shop Gallery restaurant with its wide Victorian wrap-around porch perfect for sipping mint julips or sampling local wines followed by dinners that rival those of the best Bay Area restaurants.
Clear Lake is known for its bass fishing, boating, and other water sports. But recently it has been building another sort of reputation. According to the May 2007 issue of Sunset Magazine, Lake County is no longer just about country music and collegiate recreation sports. If you love Petite Sirah, but don't know how to spell it, a trip through Lake Wine Country is sure to educate you.
Lake County was wine country in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries and is enjoying a wine-making renaissance today with tasting rooms throughout the county. Lake County's distinctive soil, made so by volcanic ash, is perfect for Petite Sirah and this discovery has recently given rise to a flurry of new wineries, as well as some old ones (Langtry Estate and Vineyards was founded in 1888 by actress Lillie Langtry), which are now specializing in it. Last year introduced the first annual tour of ten Lake County wineries from Middletown to Nice. Hugely successful, it attracted people from as far as Santa Monica.
Let's face it, it doesn't get much better than winery hopping along shady, vineyard-lined streets unless its skipping along a vineyard-lined hillside overlooking a lake, sitting at a lakefront winery or, better yet, floating on one ("Lake County has the only floating winery that we've ever heard of"--Sunset Magazine). And, while Napa has its winery train, Lake County has its mule-drawn wagon train focusing on enjoying spring wildflowers, fall foliage, and complimentary Lake County wines. It's a wonderful place for hikes and nature walks of all kinds.
What a venue in which to sip beauty of every kind. With its volcanic mountain, green hill-haloed expanse of 105 mile shoreline, gorgeous lake vistas, and some of the most beautiful untouched land in California, Lake County, depending on the locale or time of day, can suggest the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, or Mexico. This unique vacation home will show you all three of these faces in spades, along with its distinctively Northern California red heart.
