Quiet & private unit with fenced yard just steps from the beach. A complete remodel of the unit was completed in the Fall of 06. The fully equipped kitchen and bath feature limestone counters and maple cabinets. Flagstone flooring throughout the unit extends out to the landscaped yard, providing an additional 200 square ft. of living area. Walls of windows and a sliding door open to the yard bordered by palms, ginger and tropical flowers. The tropical/Asian decor is comfortable and uncluttered with room to relax while you watch your favorite shows on the 26' flat screen TV. Enjoy your meals inside or outside. This is the only rental unit in Hono Kai with a fenced yard. Although the unit does not have a beach view the trade off is the view is just steps away and you have the quiet privacy that the beach front units fronting the common area may not. The unit is bright and airy with two entrances.
Hono Kai is located near the end of Hauoli St., one of only two complexes on the street that has direct beach access, you can walk for miles on Sugar Beach, beach combing or watching for whales or turtles. Go for a swim, snorkel or surf in the clear warm water right in front of the complex or watch the sunrise over dormant 10,023 ft Haleakala
About 1/4 mile away (within walking distance) is 'Maalaea Village'. There you will find several wonderful restaurants from casual to 4-Star, and most with ocean or harbor views. The charming 'Harbor Shops' shopping complex features Hula Girl's 'fresh made' Cookies & Ice Cream, an Art gallery, Maui Surf, The Hawaiian Trading Company, Juice Stop, Island Soaps & Candles, Maui Discount Gifts, Moonbow Tropics (Tommy Bahama), Maui's T-Shirts, Aloha wear, The Coffee Shop, Hand Crafted Jewelry, and the Pacific Whale Foundation.
There is also the Maalaea Harbor (one of Maui's main harbors) where boats leave on snorkeling, dinner and sunset cruises. During winter they leave on hourly 'Whale Watching' cruises on Maalaea Bay. Next to the Harbor is the renowned Maui Ocean Center, a world-class Hawaiian aquarium with a clear glass, walk through 'under water tunnel' allowing you to view sharks, manta rays and beautiful tropical fish without getting wet.
At the entrance to Maalaea Village is Carl's Jr., a 76 gas station, and the Maui Golf & Sports Park for guests of all ages. The park features two fun and challenging miniature golf courses, a natural 4,000 sq. ft. lagoon with water falls, bumper boats, water blaster guns, rock climbing and an X-Treme Trampoline.
At the beginning of Hauoli St. is the Trade-Winds Mini Mart & Deli. They have freshly made deli sandwiches and a nice selection of groceries as well as fresh meats and produce. They also rent movies and snorkeling gear.

We saw sea turtles every morning and every evening right outside our unit!! The condo is located at the beginning of a nice 2 mile walk down a sandy beach (which are harder to find on Maui than say Kauai or Oahu). The location was great! Centrally loacted to everything. Quite unit, close to managers office (only 2 units down). I would and have recommended this condo to friends here in San Diego, CA. Mahalo for the hospitality, we will deffinately be back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

Checked out of the property today and wanted to write a review before the feeling sets out. The property is amazing and does provide everything mentioned here. The whole apartment was nicely redone to a modern finish and is very comfortable for a couple. Kitchen had all the utensils and probably more that what we ever needed. The cooler in the closet was a life-saver and we took it to every beach we went to during our stay. In a very quiet neighborhood, it is beautiful all throughout the day. The only complaint, as mentioned by one of the previous reviewer is the bed. It is too soft and very very noisy with the springs making noise when you turn sides. The unit is in a small quiet complex that is right on the beach in Maalaea (although the unit itself is not beachfront). Its been nicely renovated - nice job redoing the kitchen and bath. The kitchen was well equipped and there were a few extras like a cooler, beach towels, beach chairs etc. Internet service was excellent - pretty quick. The little fenced patio area is nice. Pool is small but right on the beach. I really liked the central location and the quiet complex - Sugar Beach is right outside and it runs for miles down to north Kihei - the other owners I met while there were pretty friendly. The owner was easy to deal with and helpful. I would recommend this condo - its a good value at this price point. For overall unit quality I'd give it 4 stars but I added an extra start due to central location and value.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We enjoyed our stay at the condo. It was clean and reasonably priced. The kitchen is very well equipped, the complex is well taken care of and the grounds are very pretty. The beach overlooking Maalaea Bay is beautiful and quiet. The location was very convenient...about a 2 minute ride to the Maui Ocean Center and Pacific Whale Foundation that offers several whale watching cruises from the harbor, and the nearest grocery store is in Kihei about 10 minutes away. The owner was very nice and provided good customer service via e-mails. Our only dislike...the bed was a little too soft. The photos are exactly whats there. Remodeled and modern upgrades to make it feel more classy than your run of the mill condo. Clean and very quiet complex. Spacious with all the amenities you would need to make your stay memorable. I would recommend this unit for anyone wanting a nice place to stay on Maui!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.
