Situated on 7 scenic acres, with over 300 feet of oceanfront, Old Salt was built over 150 years ago by a sea captain who wanted his wife and ten children to be able to watch his ship sail in to the harbour. The trees have grown up now and the harbour is no longer visible but the 180 degree view from almost every room in this house is just as breathtaking.
Located on a very quiet road just off the Lighthouse Route, Old Salt is the perfect location to allow you to explore the very scenic South Shore. Besides the stunning natural beauty of this area there are many exciting activities to experience and savour. The area is known for its hiking trails, kayaking adventures, wildlife both in the ocean and on land, golf courses, numerous beaches, restaurants from cafes to fine dining and its local craft shops featuring Nova Scotia artists.
Everything you need to enjoy your stay on the south shore of Nova Scotia can be found here - linens, quilts, beach towels, a full kitchen, comfortable furnishings, and a well stocked binder listing local maps and attractions.
Spend a day at Old Salt: just stroll down to the water at low tide to the sand beach to go for a swim or look for shells. Or sit on the deck and watch the ships sail by as the deer and other wildlife come for a drink from the pond. Use the binoculars or the telescope to get a close up of the sailboats, fishing boats and the Tancook Island Ferry going by. Or walk down the road to see the 100 year old cemetary or take a look at some local quilts and wood crafts for sale. We also have a large collection of games, books and DVD's for your enjoyment.
Or take a day trip: Bayswater beach is less than 5 minutes away, Chester and Hubbards are 15 minutes away, Peggy's Cove is a very scenic 40 minute drive. Lunenburg, Blue Rocks and Mahone Bay are just a little farther. Halifax is less than an hour away. Halls Harbour with it's incredible 40 foot tide changes is only 1.5 hours drive from Old Salt. And Kejimkujik (known as Keji to the locals), the only inland national park of Canada in the Maritimes, is about an hour and forty minutes drive.
Included in your rental is contact information for a local person who can help you find activities that will make your stay more enjoyable. Before you arrive we will also provide a list of suggested day trips to help get your trip planning underway. Fishing trips either freshwater or saltwater can be arranged. |
