Old Salt is situated on 7 scenic acres, with over 320 feet of oceanfront. Our home was built over 150 years ago by a sea captain who wanted his wife and ten children to be able to watch his ship sail in to Blandford harbour.

Located on a very quiet road just off the Lighthouse Route, Old Salt is the perfect location to allow you to explore the very scenic South Shore. Besides the stunning natural beauty of this area there are many exciting activities to experience and savour. The area is known for its hiking trails, kayaking adventures, wildlife both in the ocean and on land, golf courses, numerous beaches, restaurants from cafes to fine dining and its local craft shops featuring Nova Scotia artists.

Everything you need to enjoy your stay on the south shore of Nova Scotia can be found here - linens, quilts, beach towels, a full kitchen, comfortable furnishings, and a well stocked binder listing local attractions and maps.

Spend a day at Old Salt: just stroll down to the water at low tide to the small sand beach or walk on the rocks and look for shells. Or sit on the deck and watch the ships sail by as the deer and other wildlife come for a drink from the pond. Use the binoculars or the telescope to get a close up of the sailboats, fishing boats and the Tancook Island Ferry going by. Or walk down the road to see the 100 year old cemetary or take a look at some local quilts, paintings and wood crafts for sale. In the house enjoy the use of our large collection of games, books and DVD's.

Or take a day trip: Bayswater beach is less than 5 minutes away, the Chester ferry (where you can take a trip out to Big Tancook Island) and the yacht club are only 15 minutes away, Hubbards is 20 minutes away and Peggy's Cove is a very scenic 50 minute drive. Lunenburg, Blue Rocks and Mahone Bay are under an hour west of Old Salt and Halifax is under an hour east. Halls Harbour with it's incredible 40 foot tide changes is only 1.5 hours drive from our front door and Kejimkujik (known as Keji to the locals), the only inland national park of Canada in the Maritimes, is about an hour and forty minutes drive.

Included in your rental is contact information for a local person who can help you find activities that will make your stay more enjoyable. Before you arrive we will also provide a list of suggested day trips to help get your trip planning underway. Ask us about arranging a fishing trip for your party.

    • I was a guest at Old Salt from Sept. 5-Sept. 12, 2009. My experience there was completely satisfying. It is secluded enough to have peace and quiet, yet close enough to shopping, groceries, internet cafe, etc. The view of the ocean from the deck is spectacular. The large yard is perfect for outdoor activities. The sleeping accomodations were very nice. Comfortable bed, with wool blankets and quilts to snuggle under if sleeping with the windows open. Kitchen was stocked with all the essentials, including a stocked pantry! Interesting hooked and braided rugs on the floors and on the walls. Beach toys available for use anytime. In my experience, this was a home away from home. I highly recommend it as a great vacation home.

    • Old Salt is a place for renewal and inspiration. A group of us stayed there for a week this September and it was perfect. The deck with the view of the water and islands, for sunrises and sunset, for meals outdoors, for relaxing with conversation...perfect. We found everything we needed in the kitchen and never ran out of hot water for showers and baths, even with 7 adults there! Beds were comfy, creature comforts were not lacking and the location is so special! If it were mine, it'd be hard to rent it out or to ever leave home. Thank you for the care of your house and for sharing it. It was a perfect vacation.

    • I lived at Old Salt throughout the 2008/09 winter. It was wonderful! There were some mighty winds but the warmth of the community made up for it. There are always things going on in Blandford, weather it be Bingo or Art Council meetings. Old Salt is a lovely spacious house right on the water. I had my kayak with me and could explore the shore or watch lobsters boat from the deck if the waters were too harsh. It is paradise, perfect for curling up in front of the fire with a book or relaxing in yard- Paradise!

    • We had a terrific time at Old Salt - a great old home with all the modern conveniences. We shared the space with another family and had plenty of room. Loved the view, the beautiful and convenient location, and the hospitality. Thanks for a wonderful, restful family vacation.

    • For a curling team of four teenage boys and their coach, Old Salt provided a spacious opportunity to relax between matches. The rugged coast line offered stimulating strolls and the scenic view rewarded our early rising for competition each morning. Conveniently located as a launching point to curling clubs in Chester and Lunenberg, as well as day trips to Peggy's Cover or beyond.

    • Our stay was so relaxing, and we felt comfortable in Old Salt right away. It's a great location to be away on your own, but not too far for things to do.

    • Old Salt is a quiet and secluded place to relax, the back deck being the perfect place to enjoy morning coffee or an evening BBQ looking out on the water. Plenty of grassy space outdoors for children to run around. Owners and local contact friendly and responsive. A good location for day trips by car, whether saltwater/freshwater fishing, exploring local coves and harbours, or a ferry trip to the Tancook islands from Chester.
