This unique "old Tahoe" lakeview home was built in the 1930s in one of Lake Tahoe's most coveted locations, on a quiet peninsula below the noise and bustle of the highway. Brockway's lakeside hot spring was an ancestral summer home of the Washoe people and one of the first places developed after completion of the Trans-Continental railway. In the 1930s, it was a playground for the rich and famous, and its historic golf course hosted the first Crosby.
Today, Brockway has a quiet Carmel-like "old woodsy" ambiance with old homes on winding forested lanes ranging from timbered lakeside mansions to modest cabins. Brockway's pink sand Speedboat Beach is one of the most beautiful and most photographed at the lake, with offshore boulder islands, and the house is a mere two blocks from the historic Cal-Neva Lodge and other casinos at the state line. It is the best of all worlds, nearby everything, yet serenely apart from the crowds and noise.
Though not directly on the lake, the beach is a short walk, and we are within the gated Brockway Hot Springs community with a large lakeside pool (heated by the springs), two tennis courts, a 180-foot pier, picnic area and clubhouse with a panoramic lakeside lounge, workout room and saunas. Other Brockway rental properties generally do not have access to these club facilities.
The house has a massive old stone fireplace in the Great room (with a barbecue on the other side in the courtyard), and a 40 foot deck overlooking the lake, with a shade gazebo and teak dining at one end, and a private hot tub at the other (the sunsets are both magnificent and free). The kitchen has been updated recently, and is fully equipped. The four-plus bathrooms are quaintly original, but fully functional and slated for updating soon.
Each bedroom has at least one adjacent bath. There are queen beds in two bedrooms, and both bunk beds and a futon in the third. There is also a king-size hide-a-bed in the TV lounge. The house has a full modern laundry, all linens, four cable TVs, a good stereo sound system with movie and CD libraries, and a small library of fun local interest reading. We even have a pair of sea kayaks for exploring the lake.
Kings Beach, about five blocks away, is a classic, slightly honky-tonk beach town with every activity you could imagine, from parasailing to jet skiing, and a cinema, antique shops and local craft fair. There are fabulous restaurants of every persuasion nearby, some within easy walking distance. Old Brockway affords an escape to a quieter time in the most beautiful place on earth.
