Location: Baldwin, Northwest, Michigan, USA (1 Hour North of Grand Rapids)
Accommodations: Streamside Home, 4 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths (Sleeps 8-10)
The home is 20 feet from the river's edge and has a panoramic view of the forest, river, and wildlife. It combines elegance and a cabin feel.
The home mainly appeals to trout, salmon, and steelhead fishermen because you are only less than a 5 min. walk to the Pere Marquette River that is open year round. The Baldwin River is a designated trout stream and has no public access and therefore while fishing trout, you rarely see another fisherman. Canoes, kayaks etc cannot navigate the Baldwin so one can truly fish alone. The home also appeals to couples who want some time alone by the fire or take an occasional nature walk along the stream. Sleeping 8-10, we can also accomodate family gatherings and small corporate or youth retreats.
The rivers are not suitable for swimming but Big Star Lake is 10 min. away and has public access for swimming, boating, and jet skis. Baldwin is in Lake County and there are literally dozens of small and medium sized lakes you can fish in. There are also many other rivers and streams to fish - The Pine, Little South Branch of the PM, and the Little Manistee to name a few.
The Pere Marquette River Lodge is 2 miles away. They have an Orvis Shop and guide services there. There are thousands of acres of State and Federal land just minutes away to hunt but there is no hunting on the property.
For canoers, kayakers and tubers, there is a livery for the Pere Marquette River 2 miles from the house, and the Pine River, 15 - 20 minutes north, has liveries also. The Pere Marquette is a relatively slow moving, simple river to canoe and suits families with small children nicely. The Pine River is a more challenging river to navigate.
For downhill skiers, Caberfae in Cadillac is 30 min away, Crystal Mountain is 1 hour away. There is cross country skiing out the back door if you like blazing your own trail. There is a groomed trail 15 min north of Baldwin.
There are no upscale restaurants in Baldwin but Club 37 and The Emerald Lake Inn both do a good job. There are also many mom & pop type restaurants that do an adequate job. There are no franchise type restaurants of any type in Lake County. 25 minutes away is Big Rapids that has Ferris State College and Big Rapids has most of the chain restaurants and a couple of more upscale restaurants and also Division I hockey.
The nearest golf course is Pere Marquette Trails about 8 miles. It is a nice course but nothing special. If you are a golfer, we suggest consulting the web for courses that are close to the property and suit your needs.
