Spruce Street is a beautiful studio apartment in our craftsman home located on Spruce Street in North Berkeley. The entrance is in the back of the house, through the lovely back yard. The house is perched on top of a park, Grotto Rock, and has oustanding bay views. The yard is filled with flowers and fruit trees.

The apartment has everything you need, including a full kitchen and newly remodeled bathroom. The kitchen area is spacious. The bathroom has a large shower, tiled with art glass, and a marble sink area. Towels and linens are provided. There is a view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the sleeping area and a private deck. It is very private. A bottle of wine and fresh flowers await you.

The house is convenient to UC Berkeley (it is 1.5 miles North of campus), to transportation (the 67 bus stop is very close) and to shopping districts. From the house you can walk to Solano Avenue which has lots of restaurants, bookstores, movies, etc. Or take a walk to Berkeley's gourmet ghetto (including Chez Panisse). Going uphill a mile is Tilden park for hiking and children's activities.

North Berkeley is a magical place.

Here is what poet had to say about the Street:

Spruce Street, Berkeley

If a street is named for a tree,
it is right that flowers
bloom purple and feel like cats,
that people are leaves drifting
downhill in the morning fog.

Everyone came outside to see
the moon setting like a perfect
orange mouth dipped up to heaven.

Now the cars sleep against curbs.
If I write a letter,
how will I make it long enough?

There is a place to stand
where you can see so many lights
you forget you are one of them.

Owner's Map of Berkeley

I have been in love with Berkeley since I arrived here in 1971. In those days, I'd come up to the hills and watch the twinkling lights in the distance, to take a vacation in my own town. I never dreamed I would live in the Berkeley Hills but in 1993 my partner and I bought an old brown shingle craftman home - the oldest house on the block - then a fixer upper - with a rental unit on the ground floor. Since then we have landscaped, remodeled, and adopted two children. We love our home and enjoy sharing it with others. For 14 years we had a long term renter in the apartment. Since renting short term through VRBO we've met people from all over the world - Holland, Germany, France, Brazil, Korea - and all over the United States. We're now expected our third repeat visitor. Our hope is that visitors love it here as much as we do.

I am writing this review as we spend our last night in Amy's apartment. Sadly, we're headed back home in the morning. It's really hard to explain just how amazing our stay here was. Amy was a great host and provided us with a lot of useful information. Even though I've spent several months in Berkeley, Amy was able to recommend some amazing restaurants that I wasn't familiar with. There are several local maps and info available in the apartment. We came to Berkeley to explore San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma and Santa Cruz, and wanted a quiet centrally located place to stay. The apartment is a wonderful escape from the hectic city in the distance. The views of the bay area are incredible. This apartment is great if you have a car, but if not, you can walk to a large amount of shops, restaurants and markets. it's just high enough in the hills for the views, but close enough to be highly convenient as well. I just can't say enough about our experience, I highly recommend staying here.

Owner response:I'm so glad you enjoyed the stay it was lovely to have you Dylan and Caitlin and I hope you'll come again!

We stayed at this studio apartment for a week in July of 2009, and it was wonderful! The studio, located at the back of the owners’ lovely home in the Berkeley Hills, overlooks the entire San Francisco Bay. Every day, we sat on the porch fronting a garden full of fruit trees, or climbed a nearby rock and enjoyed the spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the skyline of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. The studio is charming, well-equipped, cosy and very comfortable. Solano Street – with its great restaurants, book store, grocery store, boutiques and movie theater, is a lovely 20 - 30 minute walk down the hill along a pedestrian path that weaves through picturesque North Berkeley neighborhoods. If you are looking for a relaxing, peaceful, quiet place with lovely views, we highly recommend this studio.

We greatly enjoyed the cozy apartment in a lovely neighborhood during our stay in the Bay Area. The apartment is full-equipped and well maintained. We were being inspired by the stunning view from the private deck while indulging the bottle of wine that welcomed us at our arrival. We have fond memories of our time here.

Amy's private studio offers beautiful views of the bay framed by bountiful fruit trees planted throughout her terraced garden. A very quiet retreat serving as a wonderful place to unwind after a hectic day in SF. As a frequent visitor to the bay area, I certainly plan on returning to Amy's.

this cozy studio has a nature leisure landscape garden which leads to the indian rock pathway. it's so much fun to explore the north berkeley neighborhood and spend some time on the solano shops by walking down the pathway. on a clear day, we chimbed the rocks right next to the garden to enjoy the paromatic view of the bay areas. the view was breathless and th e experience was priceless.

My wife's parents stayed here when they came to visit us (we live a few blocks away). They were very happy with the place--it was clean and cozy. Amy was very friendly and helpful.
