My fiance and I stayed in Dave's tree house this past summer and had a great week at the beach. Dave was very welcoming and made sure to give us the grand tour of the house. We spent almost everyday riding the beach cruiser bikes down to the beach and just soaking in the sun. The bikes were perfect for getting around the island. We rode them to eat dinner and best of all to Bert's market which has a great wine selection and is open 24 hours. Most nights we spent up on the rooftop deck just catching up and soaking in just the slow life beach feeling of folly beach. The house has a very cozy feel to it and is perfect for a relaxing getaway. Many thanks to Dave and we hope to be back again. Will

My husband and I spent Christmas at the tree house and had a wonderful week. Dave was a terrific host, and made sure we knew where everything was - in the house and on the island. We love the funky vibe of the house and felt immediately at home here. The pictures online were absolutely accurate, and we were pleased that the place exceeded our expectations. On the few cold nights we had, the gas heat kept us toasty, and the bed is luxurious and warm. The stairs are steep and the kitchen is very small, but we found we could easily accommodate. We did bring pots and pans from home because we do lots of cooking from scratch and needed special items. Our only complaint was not as much counter space as we like. The house is about four blocks from beach...easy walk...and close to everything you need. We spent several days sightseeing in Charleston, as well as lots of time walking on the beach, and enjoyed getting BBC America on the television over Christmas for a "Dr. Who" marathon (cable options and HBO available). If you want a place with lots of character, and you are willing to make small adjustments for great benefits, this is a great place for you.

After much research and planning we decided to stay at the Tree House for 5 days at the end of April. We have many relatives in the Charleston area and wanted a kitchen so we could have our grown adult children over for a home cooked meal. We were greated at check in by the owner and paid our payment (in cash as requested) by were given no receipt. As he showed us into the rental he explained that they had just treated all decking with preservative and not to use them for the next 24 hours while they dried. Also he had just reglazed the shower so not to use til the next day. Steps leading into the house were also treated and sticky. Unfortunately due to the humid weather all wood decking and stairs remained sticky for the entire stay. We had a few relatives over the next day for drinks and to walk to the beach and downtown Folly. The following morning one of our sons who lives nearby stopped with a friends dog (who was on a leash). He came to the door to see if we wanted to walk with him on the beach. After our walk the our son left and the owner (who apparently lives in the house behind on the same property) came pounding on the door screaming that there are no pets allowed to stay there. We explained that we had no pets there but he stomped away angry. This left us uncomfortable. That night while reading in bed a large cock roach came walking down the bed between my husband and I. My husband caught and removed it but that was the final straw for me. I sat up in a chair all night. I called the owner in the morning who did apoligize and said he would have an exterminator out that day. We decided to check out and go to a hotel. I feel that they should not have rented the house right after treating the outdoor wood. We were not offered any refund but owner did apoligize for the bug. Also linens, rugs, cloth furniture seemed dirty.

My wife and I had a great week in the Tree House. We like vacation rentals that are non-standard and show the owner's individual taste. Tree House has wonderful woodwork, ironwork and interesting art. It is vertical. Be prepared to climb up and down two flights of stairs and the ladder to the roof deck. It may be a little hot on the upper floor in August. We particularly enjoyed eating and star gazing on the roof deck -you are truly in the trees with the birds. The beach is a five minute walk. It is an easy, fifteen minute drive into Charleston for city life.

My husband and I stayed here the first part of May. Beware, the owner only accepts cash as payment. We were not told of this prior to our arrival and was expected to pay the rental fee upfront with cash. Who carries that much cash? Knowing this ahead of time would have been a huge red flag for us. (There was no paperwork and no receipts). My first impression of the house was that it did not match the pictures. The furniture was different and much more clutter than the photographs showed. It is filled with items obviously found at yard sales or items that had been discarded. One couch was torn, the chairs at the table for two downstairs were extremely wobbly and not safe to use. The washer and dryer are almost not accessible (they have about a 12 inch clearance in front of them). With the exception of the couches there was not a comfortable chair to sit on. The kitchen is extremely small (which is okay if you expect it). The upstairs air conditioner was not effective. Has anyone noticed the bathtub in the dining area? Check out the photos. I actually looked online for another place to stay and was willing to give up our deposit to leave. After not finding anything in the area we decided to "rough it". After a couple of nights the bugs came out. First one was spotted on the bathroom wall. Next, by the television, a couple more on another wall, etc. They were large Palmetto bugs. I had read the reviews and saw there had been a bug problem but it appeared to have been resolved. Apparently, it was down played. It was so bad that we kept all of our foodstuff in ziploc bags and shook out each piece of clothing before we packed to leave. One of the three decks was nice. There was a large deck outside the living area that we used nightly. It had ample space and built in seating. The second deck off the dining area was very small and had only one rickety chair. The rooftop deck was a disappointment. There were two old lawn chairs (one was broken) and a hammock. We were afraid to try it after seeing all of the other unstable furniture. By the way, if you still want to stay here you should check out other online rental sites. This property is listed on three of them (that I found) and the prices are different on each one. Some have more pictures as well. What a disappointing vacation.

Owner response: This particular review was taken very personally. This client was periodically encountered throughout his stay and never indicated there were any issues. Upon the check-out procedures, not one word was spoken negatively about the property or their experience. The payment methods utilized are descriptively explained in detail prior to booking. This specific guest initially was more interested in a discount and ultimately didn't submit payment until a few days into their vacation, which is certainly not a common practice in the vacation rental industry. They unfortunately showed up with no cash or check and without access to funds until some money was wired to them a few days later. The pictures are current and updated and accurately reflect the condition of the property. The washer and dryer is accesibile as indicated by the photographs. The upstairs A/C is absolutely functional and certainly can keep up with the weather associated with staying at the beach. Palmetto bugs are an unfortunate side effect of living in the low country, and although this property is on quarterly pest control, a random siting is not out of the ordinary for any property on Folly Beach. This property is not invested by any means as indicated in their response. The outdoor furniture has been replaced since this review and the hammock has been removed as well. This property is listed on both HomeAway and VRBO and the prices are accurately reflected on both. I certainly wish any issues were brought to my attention during their stay and they would have been addressed immediately. I do take pride in my custom, hand-crafted cottage and do my best to ensure the guests have an amazing vacation as reflected by other responses submitted by previous guests with 5 star reviews. It does appear that this property was not an ideal match for this guest.

My husband and I stayed here for a week to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. It was just perfect for the two of us! Being only 15 minutes from downtown Charleston, it was a great "home base" for us while we did our sightseeing. And later in the week, when it was rainy, it was a homey, cozy place to curl up with a book and listen to the rain. David was very hospitable and made sure we knew where to find things we needed, not only at the house but also around Folly Beach. It was a great escape, and I highly recommend it!

My sister & I stayed at the Treehouse during a visit to Folly to celebrate my sis's birthday. The landlord, David, greeted me and showed me around the property, then left us to celebrate. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. I slept in the most comfortable bed ever on the first floor, while my sister chose the more secluded upstairs bedroom "nook" next to the kitchen. The stove and fridge were spotless, and there were no odors from anywhere. There are many levels to the treehouse, ending with a small patio on the top of the house from which the marsh is visible - a great place for witnessing the "super moon"! David offered us bikes to get around the island on, which is easy to do bc the beach is only a few blocks away, as are the shops/restaurants. This location is very quiet. The Treehouse has everything you need, including a washer & dryer, for a completely enjoyable stay. You can't beat this eclectic getaway for the price!

Romantic might be the first impression at a glance, but within our first day at the tree house we were regretting our decision. The list of issues is long, but for starters it was not clean, (cobwebs in the kitchen, mold on the shower curtain, grunge on the kitchen floor around the stove...),the yard was still a mess as described by a previous disappointed guest. The kitchen is on the second floor accessible by a treacherous set of stairs I could only navigate down by going backwards as on a ladder. The wireless internet does not work for Mac users (me), the main settee upstairs was broken, knobs missing on the kitchen stove.....I am not done, but have made my point. We'll be back to Folly beach , but we won't be back to the tree house.

The "Tree House" is a unique getaway in a quiet location, convenient to fabulous restaurants, shopping and Charleston sites. The accommodations allowed lots of space for my early bird husband to enjoy his coffee away from me sleeping in. We had such a good time star-gazing on the rooftop, playing a game at the table, and sitting out on the balcony among the birds every chance we got. The place has obviously been renovated by hand, with lots of love and has its own interesting personality, with door knobs and faucet handles not always going the direction you expect. The owner was genuinely warm and welcoming, giving us a walk thru upon our arrival. We lingered each day in the house, finding it hard to leave the comfort and quiet to do even the things we wanted to go out and do. We opted to eat dinners at Bowens Island Seafood and Blu Restaurant, both right on Folly Beach. The food was great and Blu Restaurant had a view of the surfers in the ocean! We were truly sad to be leaving and days later my husband remarked that the trip had been more relaxing than anywhere we have been in a very long time. We will definitely be back again, and again! *Thanks Dave, for your hospitality and honesty when I booked. Another Folly Beach property owner advertised a low price, bumped it up when we spoke on the phone, then raised it again in an email confirmation. You are clearly an honest, nice guy we are happy to have met. I look forward to seeing you again when we return! -Shawna
