let me just first say that I've rented from "Vrbo.com" many times & have ALWAYS been very pleased, but this time was different & very, very disappointing. We arrived & found the property not clean to say the least. Lets start with the beds..human hair on the pillows, dog hairs imbedded in the blanket & sheets had holes in them. Kitchen: oven was filthy, food inside cupboards, sink was not clean. Windows: sliding door had lots of dog nose prints & slobber, through out the cabin windows & sills were filthy, wi-fi wall connection was completely ripped out of wall & just hanging. Bath: toothpaste spit all around the sink, shower curtain was really, really crusty. Koi pond looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a couple of years. Fenced yard was a 12x12 area, not "yard":( We packed up the dogs & our things & traveled two hrs back home:( The postive: the owners did refund our $$$, but my birthday get away was ruined and with gas prices I would have apprreciated being compensated. The owners did offer to put us up in a local hotel while they called the cleaning lady to come over, but it was 6pm, we had 2 dogs & a cooler full of food, so that wasn't a feaseable option to stay in a hotel. To clean the place properly would have taken the entire weekend & then some. My suggestion for the furture: Owners of these rental properties need to walk in them & say "would i bring my family here to stay, my kids, my parents, myself" ?? Oh, our parents were to come the next morning & stay the night, but no way was I going to let that happen. Some of the rental $$ should be put back into keeping the inside & OUTSIDE up to date & in good condition. The front screen door was also ripped up and bent & the bottom stripping on the back french doors was torn off, more than likely by a renters uncrated dog while they went out & enjoyed the sites. Also a note to renters, if your dogs are going to destroy the property DON'T BRING THEM ALONG or bring crates for when you go out!!!! This just ruins it for those of us that do have well behaved dogs & take care of how their going to act if we leave them by themselves!! I wouldn't blame Claudio & Lisa at this point if they decided to not allow pets. So hopefully this review will prompt some major overalls by the owners. Also, you really need to fire the cleaning lady Margaret, she actually left an envelope on the kitchen counter for a tip, right!
Owner response:We have had hundreds of guests come through this specific cabin rental and were surprised by this review. After our initial contact with this guest, we checked out the property to verify her complaints. While some of the items she listed are correct and have been fixed since this review (e.g. screen door), most of the items listed could not be found or could have been easily fixed if our cleaning and handyman staff would have a chance to remedy the situation (We offered to have her go out to dinner on us or go have spa treatments on us while we addressed her complaints). For example, the shower liner, front screen and the few dog hairs we saw could have been fixed in under an hour. Furthermore, some of the items, this guest listed are simply incorrect. For example, this guest says the oven was filthy. We checked and this is a gross exaggeration. This guest also mentioned that there was food inside the cupboards. We checked and there was flour, salt, pepper, sugar and other spices so I'm not entirely sure what this guest was referencing. We try our best to provide staples such as these because 99 percent of our guests appreciate having these items when cooking. When we spoke with the guest, she made absolutely no mention of human hair, and we found none when we checked the cabin. The koi pond also was not mentioned when we spoke with the guest, but it is simply impossible to keep the filters running during the winters and thus does appear dark and not very lively. The koi pond is cleaned each spring. Our handyman and cleaning staff do their best to maintain the cabins for us, and as with any rental property, issues do arise. This guest simply did not allow us a chance to remedy the problems which disappoints us. We even tried to compensate them by putting them up in a local hotel or other VRBO house that does accept pets in addition to the spa treatments or dinner; they refused and said they were going back home. When we spoke with them, they made absolutely no mention of being reimbursed for gas, and if they had preferred that over the offer of dinner or spa treatments, we would have offered that instead. We try our hardest to fix all the issues this guest had and unfortunately this guest did not give us the opportunity. We gave them a full refund.

Our stay at Jack Russell could not have been better. The location was a great getaway from our normal city life. The house had everything we needed and offered a great backyard for our dogs to play. We will likely return next year and I would recommend this to family and friends!

We stayed at JRR for two weeks in July 2010, with our 18-month old son and German Shepard Dog. Never got bored of things to do in the area -- I had counted on maybe going into D.C. for a day, but there was enough to do locally to keep us busy and entertained. The cabin was clean, comfy, well-equipped, and more than adequate for the four of us, for this length of stay.

Our family of four (two adults, two children) rented the chalet for four days. It was a comfortable house for the family of this size. The open living room area was large enough for us to watch TV and for the kids to play on the floor at the same time. The kitchen was very pleasant, with a lot of light coming from the adjacent deck where we sometimes had meals. The backyard is quite large, albeit with a slope, and the kids loved to spend time there on a hammock. The absence of a washer and dryer, though not critical for the four days stay, might have been a negative factor if we were to stay there longer. Also, having just one bathroom (on the first floor) would have been a problem for a larger family. Overall, it was one of the best houses for a family of four we could find in the area using web searches. We will certainly consider renting it again.
Owner response:Thank you for the review. There is a full size washer and dryer in the basement area. We also provide laundry detergent as well.

We had a great time in Berkeley Springs on a weekend in April of this year, and the cabin was beautiful! Just as a comment however, even though the cabin was clean in general, upon check in we found left over foods in the refrigerator (chicken bones and stuff in a 'to go' container that was open) and we also noticed that the bed comforters may need a wash, as well as the fleece blanket in the living room. It was not a big deal to us but we always like giving feedback to owners even about the small details. Another suggestion is about perhaps updating the restaurant guide the owner had emailed us ahead of time (thank you for doing so Claudio!). Two of the restaurants had moved (including the Mexican). In addition, we think that the Earth Dog's Cafe should be added!!! :) We had GREAT food there and the ambiance was just very relaxing (I don't remember seeing it on the list he provided us unless we missed it). Otherwise, everything was perfect, comfortable, cozy and wanted to thank you for giving us the opportunity to rent this place for the weekend. Our 2 year-old loved the fish pond, running around the back yard and relaxing on the hammock!

Claudio & Lisa- We had a wonderful weekend getaway at yoru cabin. Finding a place where we can vacation with 2 dogs can't be easy and to find such a great cabin in a beautifual setting was a real treat. Thankfully we just missed the blizzards too! We had an amazing meal at Tari's in town. The mussels and the tomato-arugula bisque were out of this world. We hope to cmoe back when the snow melts and enjoy the state park's activities too. Thanks for providing a cozy retreat for us and the dogs.

We stayed here end of September and first of November of 2009. Nice location - private, but yet close to Berkeley Springs. We took day trips to DC, Gettysburg and went in search of crab cakes in Baltimore, Maryland. There are many things to see and do in this area. Loved the porch with the gates to keep our beagle where we could keep track of her. She loved the woods. Nice place, would recommend to others.

My husband and I spent a week at Jack Russel's Ridge with our dogs. How much fun we had! The cottage is quaint and perfect, and the deck and grill is awesome to relax on. It is just tucked away enough to be away from the road. I loved how dog friendly the cottage was. We had a great time, and hope to return again.

My husband and I visited Jack Russel's Ridge in June of 2009 with another couple. The cabin is very cute and located nicely in the country, but not too far from a lot of entertainment! We enjoyed the week hiking and exploring the neighboring small towns. Another great feature of Jack Russel's Ridge is that they are pet friendly! We brought our two dogs and they also enjoyed the country! You can't beat a vacation in which you don't have to worry about finding a pet sitter!

Cabin is close to town but very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. No noisy neighbors and complete privacy.During our visit, we hiked, biked, rode horses on the trial at Cacapon State Park and took a dip in the Springs followed by a one hour massage. Visited the Sunday market and went to see a movie at the local theatre. Rounded this out with day trips to Hagerstown (Wilson's quilt shop) and Harpers Ferry. With all that we still had lots of time to relax in the cabin. Would we plan another visit -- absolutely. Thanks for sharing your home. Two Sisters.

hi, it was probably the best time of the year to visit your cabin and the surrounding scenery was something that tourists to just the downtown of berkely springs and the waters, etc. do not get to take in west virginia's natural beauty is all around your cabin that is snuggled back into the woods but yet very conveniently located and close to the road the bose surround sound system did not hurt any either as i brought my own music and i especially liked the 'loft' bedroom the kitchen is spacious and and bath is comfortable overall, i would come again tomorrow if possible and it is especially nice if travelling on to the east coast it is a great relaxing way to 'break up the trip' i plan to return to visit more of the area restaurants and of course the wonderful hot springs that is only minutes away thank you, diane

My wife, 5 year-old son and our collie have spent a couple great weekends at this chalet. Berkeley Springs is nearby, but the location is isolated enough that it's dead silent at night, except for occasional crickets. The chalet itself is lovely and well maintained, and the view of the stars from the deck is unparalleled. There's great golf and hiking at nearby Cacapon State Park, and it's near enough to Whitetail to make a winter ski trip a possibility. It's also a great home base if you're a road cyclist in need of some long hills and quiet country roads - just ride up toward Cumberland on either side of the Potomac. It's around a 90 minute drive at the most from D.C. We've stayed at the cabin a couple times, and will be going back again soon.

We had stayed at the owner's other property, Retriever's Retreat in March of 2008, and decided to return for a long weekend in March of 2009. Because that property was booked for the weekend, we ended up at Jack Russell's Ridge. It's not quite as secluded as Retriever's Retreat, but it has all of the same luxury amenities. The one extra amenity this cabin had was a fenced in area of the yard where our dog could run around. The weather worked out in our favor and we were able to have campfires both nights we were there. We also spent most of our Saturday hiking at Cacapon State Park, which wasn't too far of a drive away. Most other cabins I've seen that are this nice are priced much higher. I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone who wants to take some time to relax, but still wants all the luxuries of home.

We had a great visit to this comfortable and convenient house just a few minutes outside downtown Berkeley Springs in the countryside. The kids loved the goldfish pond and still talk about the place. We enjoyed two good dinners downtown as well as a nice diner breakfast. We walked the shops and spa area too. A nice way to see this convenient getaway from DC area.

We've been to the cabin twice and have had two absolutely fabulous trips down to Berkeley Springs. The cabin is fantastic ~ terrific location, wonderful amenities, and quite clean. We had a great time in Berkeley Springs, taking in the sights, shops, and terrific food. The people there are very friendly and nice to meet and talk to. The cabin's location is perfect...just far enough away from everything to make it secluded and quiet, and just close enough to everything to make it convenient to get anywhere you want to go. The owners are fabulous to work with and the fact that we can bring the dogs really means a lot to us. I really can't say enough about this place. We'll definitely be back again and have highly recommended it to family and friends as well. Keep up the good work!

It was obvious that the owners had done a lot of work on the property. Almost everything seemed brand new, and it was the perfect size for a family of 4. Our daughters loved the fish pond, and the location was quiet enough to hear all that nature had to offer. We liked having the large-screen TV and all of the electronics at our disposal for those rainy days. I highly recommend Jack Russell's Ridge.

My husband & I had a wonderfully relaxing time on our extended weekend getaway while staying at Jack Russell's Ridge. The house was very clean and comfortable and offers many modern ammenities. I loved the natural lighting in this secluded home and the outdoor decks offered a quiet, peaceful place to enjoy morning coffee and listen to the sounds of nature. I was surprised to see fish in the pond in mid October! The home's easy local to both Berkeley Springs and Hancock, Maryland was perfect for us. We were able to enjoy everything the town of Berkeley Springs has to offer from great spas to quaint little shops to fabulous dining. The town seems to have something to offer for everyone. In Hancock we were able to enjoy some long awaited biking on the C&O Canal bike trail, which by the way is quite scenic. This was our second visit to Berkeley Springs and again, we thoroughly enjoyed it. We surely would love to stay at Jack Russell's Ridge next time around! Thanks for sharing your beautiful mountain home!

We rented Jack Russell Ridge over a weekend in November and we were absolutely delighted about it. The accommodations are first class. The price to rent was fair. The cabin is very spacious and clean with excellent kitchen appliances as well for all the weekend chefs out there. The video and sound system is way top notch. The bedrooms are very nice and comfortable. Its very easy to get to the cabin but there is a feeling of you being far away when you get there. At the same time, with all the amenities of a wonderful home, you will be delighted by all the creature comforts it has. Our only regret is we only stayed for the weekend but we plan to rent it again in the future. Its that good a cabin to come back again and again. The proximity to Berkeley Springs is also ideal. You can go to the spa or window shop in some of the quaint Mom and Pop stores in town. We chose to go hiking up Cacapon State Park and soak in the view from the flat-top peak. Its a must see.. BTW, renting Jack Russell Ridge is a joy because the proprietors also give you all the vacation information you need to have a great time in the area. They are very thorough and professional that we did not have any issues at all renting their property. Expect us to be frequent renters from here on out. All the best! EPGoco

We stayed at Jack Russell's Ridge for one weekend a year ago while attending our son's wedding. This is an immaculate and pet-friendly (yes, both!), very well equipped and extremely comfortable place for weary travelers and Berkeley Springs art lovers and adventurers. Our dog was very pleased to be there as well, and she totally enjoyed the wrap around porch, where she was able to play hide and seek with us. She used that old trick of changing directions when she thought we were getting close!! We didn't have time to cookout, but everything was there in for bbq'ing too. The kitchen was totally well-equipped and we will plan to stay there again on our next trip to Berkeley Springs.
