What a cute place!!! Really enjoyed my time in this cabin. It was very cozy and romantic. This was roughing it a bit since the water was pumped from jugs, an incinerator toilet and outdoor shower. The shower was a bit cold even after pumping it for a while, but that is what happens when it gets cool in October. Liz and Paul were kind enough to allow me to shower in their home since it did get chilly, but I roughed it and managed without inconveniencing them While, this all may sound negative, it truly wasn't since this was all advertised and part of the true 'one with nature' theme. There is nothing I would have changed about this trip. It was a couple steps up from camping with an AMAZING location. While it was a bit from Asheville, it was totally worth the drive for the location. Hearing the train along the french broad river did wake us up in the nights, but we actually really enjoyed that. We used the fire pit to cook our meals and made good use of the stove to keep warm. Also, there were heating pads in the bed which were lifesavers!! The touches they added to this cabin made us feel right at home. They even left our dog some treats which was so nice! We had a great time!!! Hope to see you again, maybe in summer!!

My wife and I stayed for three nights on this cozy island and loved every minute. The only drawback was that it was so relaxing and beautiful that each time we went to Asheville, we wanted to go back to the cabin so we ended up seeing very little of Asheville. Highly, highly recommended.

This little cabin was simply perfect! It was total relaxation and being secluded on our own little island made it even better. Crossing the suspension bridge was fun! The sound of the river and the rain on the roof was music to our ears. We couldn't have asked for a better place to get away from it all, but it was also great that Dt Asheville is only 15 min away. It's also a 20-30 min drive from hiking, rafting and even 30-40 min from some waterfalls. The cabin had literally everything we needed. Liz even surprised us with some wonderful FRESH eggs from her own chickens. The daily humming bird show on the front porch was beautiful as well as the nightly firefly show. This was the perfect place for our vacation. It was wonderfully rustic and romantic at the same time. We also loved the environmentally friendliness of the rain barrel system and incinolet. My husband and i had the most perfect time on our vacation at the cabin. We can wait to go back and get away from it all, all over again!! Thank you for such a truly special stay!!

We noted this cabin on VRBO about a year ago, and finally got an opportunity to visit. We had an incredibly relaxing stay at the cabin: floating on the river; sleeping on the hammocks; watching the gaggle of geese float up and down-stream in the evenings. Plus short drives to hikes on the parkway and Asheville. We can't wait to go back for another stay!

What better way to spend our days than floating on the river, reading in the hammock, grilling on the porch, and enjoying the sounds of the water - we were able to do it all. We originally had plans to hike in the area but were so happy to just relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The cabin is stocked with so many thoughtful touches such as cozy fleeces, fresh eggs, binoculars, and games. It feels completely remote yet is conveniently close to Asheville and the surrounding area. I only wish I booked it for a longer period of time.

Needed a getaway from everything and found this little gem. It has the perfect balance of everything you need to be comfortable while still preserving the natural beauty and seclusion of a riverside campsite. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who can appreciate the simple things in life and just needs a break from everything to remember them.

There are a lot of reviews that herald this place as "heaven on earth," and I am here to reiterate that statement. Liz graciously allowed us to stay for two days to fill a last minute occupancy (not to mention we arrived two hours later than we estimated). After a stressful weekend of classical guitar competitions in Boone, basking in the river with some cold beer and grilling our meals over an open fire was exactly what my boyfriend needed. We lucked out with incredible weather, as well! The river was warm in mid-April, and we splashed around all afternoon...until we spotted a water snake, ha. Needless to say, this cabin captures the best part of camping: campfires and isolation in the great outdoors, while providing the amenities that civilization takes for granted: a private bathroom, showers, kitchen utensils, etc. Actually we were quite impressed by the modern appliances installed to compensate for the lack of plumbing and running water, such as an incinerating toilet and running water for the sink faucet provided by bottle. (I was also shocked at how much water one could waste just by washing dishes...) They also provide a coffee maker, so you can forgo the terrible instant coffee that one must endure when camping. The cast iron cookware were also seasoned perfectly and cooked excellent steaks. My boyfriend chided me every time I killed a spider crawling near me, as this was nature, which we wanted to experience. Unfortunately the city can make you "nature-handicapped," and I had to remind myself that I was trading the cockroaches and mice for moths and spiders. Regardless, we soaked in as much as we can before we had to return to the concrete jungle. We hope we can return and spend a whole week. Thank you, again!

Our time spent at the American Cabin was amazing in every way! We enjoyed hiking the nature trail during the day and campfires at night by the river. Nothing can compare to leaving the door open throughout the night and falling asleep to the sound of the river outside. We enjoyed being "disconnected" from the hustle of everyday life for the first time in many years. It was pretty chilly while we stayed at the Americana but the wood burning stove kept the cabin warm and toasty throughout the weekend. Paul and Liz are wonderful hosts making sure we had everything we needed. We are looking forward to our second trip to the Americana!

When discussing our honeymoon, we decided that we wanted to find a rustic cabin in the woods on a lake or river. When we arrived at the suspension bridge to the island, we realized that we had found the perfect spot! This was further proven when we made our way down the trail to the cabin. It was a wonderful little cabin and very clear that Liz and Paul treasured this spot as well. It looked just like the pictures-cute, quaint, cozy, well maintained, and had all of the necessary comforts of home...yet allowed us to get a break from the hustle and bustle. We spend our days sight seeing in Downtown Asheville and at the Biltmore Estate, and our evenings at the cabin cooking on the campfire and lounging in the rafts on the beautiful French Broad River. We knew that Liz and Paul were just a suspension bridge away if we needed anything, but we felt like it was just the two of us! We had a wonderful stay and can't wait until our next trip to the private island and the Americana cabin.

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. The cabin is quiet and relaxing. It doesn't matter that it doesn't have A/C. We stayed in mid June. We pretty much stayed gone during the day and the nights were a little chilly. LIz even provided two light jackets to wear, which I did. We remembered to bring our OFF and didn't even need it, no mosquitoes, didn't get bite once. My husband enjoyed fishing by the river. I enjoyed lying in the hammock and cooking by the campfire. The cabin is convenient to downtown Asheville and the Blueridge Parkway. We would love to come back again, hopefully soon.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: Paul and Liz Wiederhold moved to "the river" in 2006 to follow their dreams. Their incredible new riverfront location begged to be shared... and "Riverside Escapes" was born. More than vacation rentals, the future of Riverside Escapes will include riverfront weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats, and more. The Wiederholds were married on the property's island and live onsite where they provide personal service for their guests. The property is full of animals; Diamond - our very friendly campus mascot dog, a flock of very pampered free range chickens, a pair of mallard ducks who have taken up voluntary residency, and lots of other birds and critters. Paul owns a high end roofing company specializing in slate, tile, copper and metal roofs, and copper gutters. When not working, Paul loves to fish, kayak and generally enjoy the river. Liz enjoys hostessing and working "hands on" at Riverside Escapes including fixing and building things, as well as designing, decorating, sewing and landscaping.

                      Why the Owner Chose Asheville:
The French Broad River is a spectacular river meandering through a spectacular town. "Broad" is a descriptive name for this large, majestic river which is largely unspoiled by development. Yet, just down river, Asheville offers all of the excitement, arts, fine dining, nightlife, and eclectic culture that anyone could seek. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail and so many other natural gifts are just a short drive away. Madison County offers some of the beautiful whitewater rafting locations, unspoiled mountain land, and even snow skiing in Wolf Laurel. Our location is ideally located just north of Asheville and south of Madison County. It is truly the best of both worlds.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Riverside Escapes offers the only island vacation rental in the area and one of just a few riverfront properties. Guests are encouraged to walk the swinging bridge, fish from the shores, sit by the riverside campfire, and generally immerse themselves in the incredible natural beauty of the property. There is something for everyone here. For the more adventurous type, our island cabin offers the feel of remote camping, but none of the hassles. For those seeking more luxury, our mainland cabin has all the comforts of home and more with a hot tub, custom tile showers, coffee bar, wireless internet access, and more.
