Central Location in Gorgeous Santa Margherita
Surrounded by mountains, located on the beautiful blue Mediterranean, and sharing the same Riviera coastline as Nice and Monte Carlo, Santa Margherita Ligure is a jewel of a town. The pride of Northern Italians, the town, its beaches, and many activities can make for an unforgettable vacation.
A cluster of multi-hued buildings rising from the sea, the town is a former fishing village. A small fishing fleet still goes out everyday, but the town is now a vacation destination of choice for many Italians and some Americans. Strolling the town, one can enjoy the scenic ocean and mountains and the beautifully painted building exteriors with their faux architectural elements. Its numerous family-owned restaurants serving the region’s specialty cuisine (fresh fish and pesto pasta are favorites) are complemented by the many small shops, from those offering souvenirs to ones with the latest Milanese fashions.
Beaches are scattered close-by with clear blue waters for swimming. Many trails wind up through the mountains and provide panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the Bay of Tiguillio. The nearby town of Portofino (5 km) is justly famous for its beauty and charm. The 5 towns and walking trails of the Cinque Terre are an easy train ride away and make for a memorable daytrip. Ferries leave on a frequent basis to the surrounding towns, including Portofino, the Cinque Terre, and lovely abbey at San Fruttuoso.
We fell in love with Santa Margherita from the moment we arrived and searched for years to find just the right apartment for people with similar tastes. Our apartment takes advantage of everything the area has to offer. Look south from the living room balcony to the sun, the beautiful mountains, and the sea. A short walk down the street lies the town center and many restaurants and shops. From our door to the ocean is but a few minutes walk, and some of the best beaches are an easy walk of 15 minutes.
The two spacious bedrooms sleep 4 comfortably and have the same marble floors as the living room and foyer. The best views are from sunny living room and balcony, but you can throw open the shutters of most rooms and enjoy lovely surroundings. There is a complete kitchen and bathroom with American-style shower. We have dishes, linens, and a washer, to make you feel you are in a wonderful home away from home.
The international airport at Genoa is about ½ hour away and the major airport at Milan, 2.5 hours away, can be reached easily by train/bus or by car. Trips to wine areas, Nice and Monte Carlo, and Lake Como are 2-3 hours. Other areas in Italy can be reached in hours from the train station in town.
