The Palisade Log Cabin on the north shore of Lake Superior is located just off Highway 61, one mile east of Silver Bay. It is about a half mile through heavily wooded lots to the 35-year old secluded and authentic log cabin. The cabin sits on 2.6 acres of private land and has more than 460 feet of high rugged Lake Superior shoreline.

There are incredible views to the north of the Palisade Head Cliffs. These cliffs reach 350 feet high and are a favorite of rock climbers. You can hear the waves of the lake crashing against the ledge rock cliffs just 70 feet from the cabin. The sunrises over the lake are spectacular; in the evening you might be able to view the northern lights.

We installed a new geothermal heating system in October 2012 which should keep the cabin warm and cozy all winter long. Enjoy the peace and solitude of the whispering pines and birch while watching a bald eagle flying above. You can read a book or play cards/games near the cabin’s warm wood stove. Outside you can toast marshmallows at the fire pit or play horseshoes. Search for Thomsonites, agates, crystals, cobblestones, or driftwood. Go berry picking or view colorful spring wild flowers and brilliant fall foliage.

Drive the Highway 61/Superior National Forest Scenic Byway and visit the beautiful Minnesota state parks nearby (see map). Hike on The Superior Hiking Trail that runs from Two Harbors to the Canadian border. Ride your bike on the Gitche Gami Bike Trail that runs along Highway 61. Snowmobile on the North Shore State Snowmobiling Trail or drive an ATV on designated ATV trails from Duluth to Grand Portage. Try cross-country skiing on the North Shore Mountain Cross Country Ski Trail. Visit Lutsen Mountains ski resort 36 miles from the cabin.

In the summer you can go to the nearby secluded and beautiful sandy beach (ask for directions). Take a charter boat tour or fishing trip out of the Silver Bay Marina that is 3.5 miles to the southwest. If you're adventurous, you can go kayaking/canoeing in the cove.

Watch for giant iron ore carriers on Lake Superior, they depart from Silver Bay and head east to Cleveland. Look for wildlife around the cabin and you may see eagle, deer, moose, bear, fox, wolf, and beaver. If you don’t feel like cooking, dine at a variety of fine nearby restaurants (Lemon Wolf, Northern Lights, The Crossings, and Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay; Our House in Finland; The Blue Fin in Tofte).

The Palisade Log Cabin is in close proximity to all activities listed here, most within just a few miles. Most important, take time to enjoy a classic log cabin experience on the North Shore!

                      • Silver Bay is midway between Duluth (55 miles to the southwest) and Grand Marais (55 miles to the northeast). It is a great location to see all the beauty of the North Shore of Lake Superior. Minnesota state parks nearby include Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Light House, Tettegouche, George Crosby Manitou, and Temperance River. The Palisade Head just northwest offers great views of the lake. Also nearby is the Superior National Forest and the Superior Hiking Trail. ...moreless

This place is great if you are looking to get away from it all. While the dates we picked were unfortunately packed with foggy weather, the views when they opened up were really spectacular. The cabin itself was really comfortable, clean and had everything we needed for our short stay. While the cabin does have heating, the wood stove was a nice touch and we used it nightly. Our stay was particularly short, 3 nights, so we decided to eat out for most of our meals, the cabin however was ready for anyone who plans to bring food with them (if you dont bring it with you, plan to stop in Two Harbors before you get to the Cabin for groceries, there is very little selection in Silver Bay and everything closes very early. The local restaurnat selection was very slim, with only a couple of restaurants in the Silver Bay area. We really enjoyed eating breakfast at the honeybee bakery and the lemon wolf cafe next door. Beyond Silver Bay there are several restaurants within a 20-30 min. drive. We ate one night at BlueFin and another lunch at Betty's Pies, we enjoyed both of those a lot. Although, BlueFin was rather pricey. Overall the cabin was really nice, my only comment (and I will probably get slapped for even saying it) was that there was no internet connection or WIFI. There was cable TV via Satellite which was handy during the rain storms that rolled in. I do understand 99% of people going out there are trying to disconnect, but it would have been nice to be able to do a little more research on trails, parks, sights, restaurants, etc. So for those wanting to really get away, literally my cell phone (Sprint...I know!) had no service. We hit all the highlights which are a must see, gooseberry falls, Pallisade Head, Split Rock Lighthouse. All are worth it if you are in the area. We also drove up to Grand Marias (SP?). Its a nice small town, people are nice and they have some nice little shops there. If you like a nice scenic drive, its definitely worth the drive, waterfalls off the road are pretty spectacular. Great Stay, Great Place, Great Vacation.

Wow - I cannot say enough nice things about this wonderful cabin in the woods! I want to know how they arranged beautiful weather for us and the most awesome sun rises we've ever seen! I brought too many 'things' for our stay as the cabin is fully stocked and you want for 'nothing' when it comes to convenience! (Couldn't find the grill brush to clean the grate after each night).....! We didn't see any moose-only a couple of scrawny deer! A bald eagle was nice enough to make an appearance right over the deck during happy hour!!! We WILL be back!

My wife and I rented this cabin for ten days at the end of April and had an incredibly relaxing time. We had initially figured we'd be doing a lot of biking, but as you may recall Mother Nature had different plans for the end of April 2013 in Minnesota and the area was slammed with record snow the day of our arrival! Harold and Rae are great property managers and very easy to work with. We came to the cabin to find it in perfect condition...there's lots of room and we were able to bring up a sewing machine for quilting and even used the 2nd bedroom as a guitar practice and recording space. The cell phone reception is generally good, but if you need the actual internet you usually have to go to the municipal liquor lot in Silver Bay....so the cabin is perfect for those really looking to escape the modern necessity of always having to be online. The sunrise vistas over the lake are the stuff of postcards and the cabin is close to several state parks...but wildlife can be found outside as deer come to graze, and eagles can be seen fighting off seabirds for control of the highest spots on the coast. Pretty awe-inspiring views combined with solitude (there are neighbors but the property is secluded from sight by trees from other lots) made for an excellent "Spring" break.

Perfect cabin. Sat on Lake Superior, read, un-plugged from the world and tended our souls. If you are in need of quiet, this is the place to go. Very clean, fully equiped kitchen and extremely comfortable. Drove to Ely and Grand Marais for the day and walked on the many trails and river beds available. Our dogs had the time of their lives on the rocky beach.

We spent a fun week at the cabin. It is located in a fantastic location on Lake Superior. Each morning we had biscuits and coffee on the deck as the sun rose over the lake. At night you can watch the moon rise and see the lights of freighters flickering in the distance. The cabin is in a wonderful location on the North Shore. While it feels secluded, it's just a short hop into Silver Bay for provisions. It's also centrally located to many of the sites and state parks in the area. It was clean, comfortable, and spacious. There is usually a nice breeze from the lake so insects aren't particularly a problem. While the cabin accommodates pets, we didn't find any evidence of their presence which attests to its cleanliness. The bathroom was spacious and well stocked with towels, etc. Harold and Rae were wonderful to work with. If you're looking for a great north woods experience, this is it.

We stayed at this cabin for a long weekend in July and the cool breezes off the lake kept us comfortable all weekend. The cabin is full of amenities and has everything you need to be comfortable and extra things to feel at home. Being dog owners, it was an extra special treat that there was a tie-out available and that the garbage can was covered. We had fires in the firepit and did plenty of hiking in the surrounding state parks. The beach just over a mile away was wonderful and a great place to take evening walks or just sit and gaze out at the lake. This place is perfect for a couple and their canine friend. It is good to note that although there are two bedrooms, the walls don't go to the ceiling, so privacy in a larger group would be affected. The attention to detail in this place is truly amazing, everything is where you need and expect it to be :)

Owner response: The cabin is located on a cliff on the lake. The beach this guest spoke of is is a few minutes from the cabin and is a great spot for slipping in a kayak/canoe, or playing with the dog, a short swim if temps are warm.

We had such a great time and were so impressed with the cabin and all it has to offer, it was just like the photos and more. The location is great, the views breath taking and you can get to so many things, we did alot of hiking and site seeing along the North Shore. We will be walking bill boards for this property for others to enjoy. We also can't say enough about the property managers they were so helpful and answered all of our questions, thank you so much Harold and Rae.

Owner response: These guests took advantage of our special rate for a week stay which includes one free night. The North Shore has so much to offer and a longer stay enables you to see and do more things.

This was our first time bringing our 5 yr old daughter to the north shore. The cabin was a great central location to split rock, Tettegouche and Gooseberry state parks. It really was just exactly what we needed. This is a true log cabin and it is quite nice. The place was clean and well kept. Kitchen was well stocked for cooking and the grill is right outside the door. The beds were great ! The owners were very easy to work with .The dog and our daughter loved it. We plan on staying here again. Most important the Easter Bunny found us there.

Spent a long weekend with just me and the dog - very relaxing, peaceful and quiet. Great sunrises and views. The cabin was clean, well equipped, and was what I expected from the pictures and descriptions. Very easy to work with Harold on agreements, payments etc. Enjoyed hiking on the Superior National trails, lots of wildlife! Would highly recommend.

My husband I had a wonderful long weekend here. The property was very clean and well maintained. We enjoyed hiking and sight seeing at near by Split Rock and Gooseberry Falls. Great food was had at Cove Point Crossings Bar & Grill and Camp 61 in Beaver Bay. We also took a road trip further north to Lutsen and enjoyed the scenic route. We would definitely return.

Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your trip/stay at Palisade Cabin. With new owners we are making every effort to improve the cabin and furnishings. Harold and Rae, managers

                      Year Purchased: 2011

About: We moved to the Twin Cities in 2000 and have gone 'Up North' to visit since. Sarah's parents have had a house in Silver Bay for many years which served as our launching pad to the north shore till we bought this cabin. The people are very nice, the air is fresh, and there is lots to do in the area. We like hiking and there is plenty of this. Also our 2 sons are just starting to fish; what a great place to learn!

                      Why Silver Bay:
The north shore of Lake Superior, particularly the stretch along Highway 61 from Duluth to Grand Marais has something for everyone. Silver Bay, which is in right in the middle of this beautiful stretch, is a great place to enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Superior and to visit the many Minnesota State Parks in the area.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We enjoy everything we describe on our property listing, especially the serenely beautiful views from log cabin. The area is quiet and relaxing but also provides us with opportunities to venture out and explore a wide variety of destinations along the beautiful North Shore!
