Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1975
Kurt and Scott Maethner are brothers who grew up in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. Kurt is a businessman who has been living in the Battle Lake, Minnesota area since he graduated from Saint Cloud State University in 1988. Scott has been on active duty in the United States Air Force since he graduated from Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota) in 1990. Scott, his wife Terri and their three young children currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Why the Owner Chose Battle Lake
Walhall has been in the Maethner family for over 30 years. The cabin was originally built in 1970 by a friend of the family. In 1975, Art and Judie Maethner (Kurt and Scott’s parents) purchased the cabin as a summer retreat. Art and Judie were both educators so the entire family was able to enjoy lengthy summer breaks while school was not in session. The Maethner family built many wonderful memories at this cabin throughout the years to include fishing, swimming, nature watching and relaxing. After Art and Judie retired and Kurt and Scott left home to start their own lives, the cabin saw increasingly less use. After Art passed away in 2006, Kurt and Scott purchased the cabin from Judie. They converted it to a vacation rental to allow others to experience this wonderful place.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
Clitherall Lake is one of the cleanest and clearest lakes in Minnesota. If you are out on the lake fishing, you can see the bottom of the lake at a depth of 16 feet. You can literally see the fish come up to your hook to take a nibble. The area in which Walhall is located has been in tune with nature for many decades. Township, city, county and state government entities respect, appreciate and nurture our natural environment, keeping it as a top priority in all of their planning and development activities. The permanent residents of the area are also very good stewards of the environment. During your stay, you too will enjoy nature's blessings to include the ability to interact with a wide variety of wildlife. You will make friends with chipmunks and squirrels, observe otters, beavers and mink at work, and run across turtles swimming and sunning themselves. If you are a bird enthusiast, you will be able to observe many species to include loons, ducks, geese, robins, blue birds, finches, woodpeckers and many more. Fish that reside in lake Clitherall include walleye, sunfish, crappies, bass, and northern pike.

The perfect setting and equally beautiful, comfortable cabin made our stay enjoyable and relaxing. It didn't take long to feel right at home. The Norwegian/Viking touches made a fun theme. Lake Clitherall is a lovely clear water lake. Our golden retriever Rusty enjoyed the grounds but especially practicing his launches off the dock. Loved our stay and hope to return. Thanks and God bless. P.S. The lovely flowers and Clitherall Lake towels upon our arrival certainly made for a warm welcome

Thank you for the use of the cabin. Our family had a wonderful time up here. Avery's (12) favorite part was the hammock. Nora (12) and Violet (9) enjoyed swimming off the dock. John (7) liked the hammock. Eva's (4) favorite part was swimming and eating s'mores on the fire. Daddy enjoyed the set up of the cabin and how spacious it was. Momma enjoyed the placement of the fire pit. I could play my guitar and sing while watching the kids fish and swim. Thank you for your generosity.

This cabin was a wonderful retreat for us as a couple. It took us literally minutes to feel relaxed and peaceful, which was very much needed for both of us. Our favorite time of day was first thing in the morning, sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee. Next was early evening, same place, with a glass of wine or a cold beer. Our kids & grandson joined use later in the week and they enjoyed everything the cabin had to offer, most of all the campfires at night. We hope to do this next year.

Thank you so much for allowing others to ejoy your family's beautiful cottage. This place is a blessing to anyone who stays!! Our family enjoyed a 2nd visit to Walhall this summer. I think this may have been a "record breaker" heat week--but we proved that with a beautiful, clear lake and sunscreen, you can overcome a little heat! Our kids caught lots of big fish--right off the dock. They also waterskied & knee boarded for the FIRST time--just a small slice of our stay. Beautiful setting!
