The interior views are as lovely as the outside ones - the sunroom drenched in the morning sun with three walls of windows, the master suite with brass chandelier and private exit to hot tub deck, the master bath with jacuzzi tub and picture window that frames a scenic view of the pond. The large pool room with gas fireplace, TV and regulation sized Brunswick pool table are sure to please. For more private pursuits, the loft is the perfect spot for curling up to read, catching a movie, or taking advantage of the WiFi network.
Located within 20 minutes of two state parks and five minutes from two downhill ski resorts, Bear's Retreat offers an exciting range of activities from mountain biking, golfing, swimming, fishing to getting away from it all and just relaxing in the beauty and stillness of this exquisite setting.
Canaan Valley is a unique ecosystem. It is as if a piece of New England or Canada was plopped down into West Virginia. It’s the highest elevation valley east of the Mississippi. Summers bring little humidity - temperatures rarely pass the 90's, and the evenings are cool and refreshing. Canaan's autumn leaves rival New England's brilliance and diversity of color. This area is unusually remote for the "East Coast". You can hike in gorgeous remote places for hours and see neither man nor structure. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is the habitat for over 150 bird species and a major flyover in the Fall.
Other attractions include the Canaan Valley Resort, Blackwater Falls State Park, and the historic mountain towns of Davis and Thomas with their unique shops, cafes, and antique stores. Don't miss the Purple Fiddle in Thomas with its alt-country music or the Whitegrass Cross Country Ski Center with its organic cafe.

Why the Owner Chose Canaan Valley
We had no intention of buying a vacation home but this house just captured us! The storybook setting with pond, stream and views of the wildlife refuge have huge appeal. The interior craftsmanship is amazing and far exceeds the standard vacation rental. It is a house which pampers and nurtures.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The koi love to be fed are very tame. The number and diversity of birds will amaze - truly a birdlover's paradise.

We loved it! The area was beautiful as was the home. There was a great backyard for our 2 small dogs. The deer came around in the mornings and we met a great big old ground hog. Lots to see and do. We went to Blackwater Falls, took a horseback ride to the top of Seneca Rocks, and so much more. Definately will be coming back!
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, sightseeing, pet owners, girls getaway, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers.
