Canaan Valley is a unique ecosystem. It is as if a piece of New England or Canada was plopped down into West Virginia. It’s the highest elevation valley east of the Mississippi. Summers bring little humidity - temperatures rarely pass the 90's, and the evenings are cool and refreshing. Canaan's autumn leaves rival New England's brilliance and diversity of color. This area is unusually remote for the "East Coast". You can hike in gorgeous remote places for hours and see neither man nor structure. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is the habitat for over 150 bird species and a major flyover in the Fall.
Other attractions include the Canaan Valley Resort, Blackwater Falls State Park, and the historic mountain towns of Davis and Thomas with their unique shops, cafes, and antique stores. Don't miss the Purple Fiddle in Thomas with its alt-country music or the Whitegrass Cross Country Ski Center with its organic cafe. |
