Better than on the Beach!!!

Such an amazing house! We rented the Hale Luana because it was our wedding week on the North Shore of Oahu. We had both the studio and the main house. The house is killer. The pictures don't do it justice. The bed is super comfortable with nice linens and the house is very clean with everything you need to cook a great meal. The bathroom has a big window so you can check like 5 great surf spots when you're showering! The studio was also great! We used it for a wedding headquarters but we would stay in it again anytime. We used the pool and hot tub almost every day. Way better than Turtle Bay - Sooo much more private and relaxing. Every morning we could hear all the birds and see the view from the pillow. It's super close to everything too! We thought we would miss the beach so for the final week of our stay we stayed on the beach but it was not comparable to the Hale Luana. We will totally pass on the word for an amazing place to stay!!

My wife recently stayed at Hale Luana (the suite) for the 3rd year in a row. Staying at Hale Luana is annual staple for our Hawaii & north shore trip. Louise is pretty much one of the most amazing people you'll ever meet. Not to mention we are jealous that she gets to take care of the property and meet all kinds of great guest year round! You're a 15 min walk (downhill) to Sunset beach, 10 min walk to Ted's, cut those in half if you take a bike. Pipeline is not far either, great walk or bike. If you like to vacation yet feel as if you live where you vacation this is the place for you. Full kitchen, Grill, Pool, hotub, you name it, it's here! The house is VERY clean, views are amazing, and your on the north shore of Oahu for petes sake. My wife and I will continue to come back here to get away from the hustle and bustle of mainland life, but our trips would not be same without Hale Luana! Mahalo Louise, we love you! Joel & Wendy

Looking forward to returning to Hale Luana

In January 2011 we stayed in the suite at Hale Luana and decided even before heading home that we needed to come back to this wonderful place – we just returned from another eight relaxing days there. The views are amazing from the living room and balcony – we watched the surfers at Sunset Point during the winter swells. The suite is spacious and beautiful, and includes a full kitchen, stereo system, DVD player, CD and book library, beach equipment, and bicycles (a nice way to avoid the traffic on Kamekameha Highway during the winter surf contests). The house is set apart on lovely landscaped grounds, with a pool and hot tub (a great way to end the day). The caretaker, Louise, is a wealth of information, and is determined to provide everything you could possibly need during your stay. We found Louise to be very considerate – yes, she does enter and exit her quarters through the suite dining area, but she was very respectful of our privacy. If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing experience, we highly recommend Hale Luana.

Wonderful private get away from it all, Beautiful views close to beaches of North Shore

We regrettably only stayed at Hale Luana for 3 days, I wish I knew how wonderful it was we would have stayed for a week. Our plan next time. We stayed in the Studio and it was great all the windows gave us a gorgeous view evey morning to wake up too and a beautiful sunset at night. It was a peaceful setting and the added company of geko's was fun. Having the pool right out our front door to go to was splendid and the Big Waves of the North Shore are a close walk to just down the hill. Louise was great and easy to get ahold of if you needed anything. If you want a peaceful relaxing destination that is close to the beach with wonderful views but a ton of privacy this is the place for you. Great if going with friends since one of you can rent the upstairs (like our friends did) and the other can stay in the studio, worked out great for us. Our friends ran down by the beach almost everyday and we slept in but all went to Ted's bakery just down the road for a quick breakfast or a great donut (A must try place) We will return again with our friends and will recommend to all of our friends traveling to Oahu. Don't miss out on such a great place on the North Shore you will be sorry.

We had a wonder 10-day stay at Hale Luana. The pictures don't do it justice. The views from the Suite are amazing. The location is the best: just above Ted's and Sunset Beach. The trade winds up on the hill keep the house cool. We had the windows open all the time. Even when it rained, the house is designed such that the rain does not come in. We look forward to returning again and again to this beautiful North Shore house.

Another Wonderful Trip to Hale Luana

Guest: Sophie (College Station, TX)
Date of Stay: 10/14/11 Review Submitted: 11/28/11

We just returned from our third trip to the North Shore and I felt compelled to write after reading that last posting! My husband and I used to stay "in town" (Waikiki) until a good friend introduced us to Hale Luana. She promised that we would never stay anywhere else on our Oahu vacations and she was right! If you are looking for a beautiful retreat on this island paradise, look no further. Go to Ted's Bakery for the most delicious pastries/coffee, Shark's Cove for a amazing snorkeling, grill steaks and watch the breathtaking sunsets from the deck, so much to do...or not do! If you feel like going out to dinner, LuLu's is less than ten minutes away at the Turtle Bay Resort. Louise (the caretaker) called ahead to tell the restaurant it was our anniversary and a special dessert was presented for our celebration. I am puzzled by the previous posting as we have always found Louise to be very pleasant, informative and never intrusive. We look forward to our next visit! With much Aloha!

Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful endorsement. Just to clarify: Lulu is the marvelous Mexican caterer. Lei Lei's is a great restaurant 5 minutes away. (And guests really need a car for shopping.)

Pictures do not do this house justice. I have rented many properties through VRBO and I have never found as perfect as this hidden gem. As soon as you pass into the hidden driveway you enter a world of serenity and beauty. Louise is phenomenal and helps every step of the way from the background. The grounds are absolutely spectacular and the views are amazing. You are steps away from the beach, where you can walk, bike or drive. The north shore is the place to be, We spent a couple days in Wakiki beach but came right back to the north shore in less than 24 hours. This is the way Hawaii is meant to be experienced. I would recommend this property to everyone. In addition, ask Louise for Lulu to cook you an amazing home cooked meal and she willl serve it to you on the beach. An amazing experience. We can't wait to come back .....Thanks for everything.

Fabulously furnished house. Everything you need is thoughtfully taken care of. Ted's Bakery is down the street...I am going through macadamia nut danish withdrawal's...amazing. I found Shark's Cove Grill a close and excellent reasonable priced road side restaurant for dinner..$10 for fresh Ahi, grilled vege's, salad and rice. Cafe Haleiwa is my favorite local's place for breakfast. North Shore Shark Adventures was lots of fun - it is not dangerous. We enjoyed the hike out to remote Hidden Beach (north west corner of Oahu) where we found a sleeping seal and no one else at the beach. We found the surfing during the summer not so great and too crowded on the North Shore and found Hawaiian Surf School to be the best for lessons(on the south shore). I am so glad the North Shore is not overdeveloped like Waikiki. I hope to return again soon...Mahalo and Aloha.

... I was checking the calendar for a return visit, having been at Hale Luana in both units and it was odd to read the only 4 star review. Louise is local (Kama'aina) and can guide you to the best Oahu and the North Shore have to offer. She takes great care of the property and, unbelievable, care of the extensive grounds. She is truly on old soul when it comes to landscaping and gardening. Be sure to ask her about the best dining ... she knows all the local spots; both gourmet and well priced. I always look forward to a return stay at the 3 acres of secluded peaceful Hale Luana!

Fabulous House

Guest: Toni (Marysville, Washington)
Date of Stay: 06/24/11 Review Submitted: 07/29/11

My husband and I stayed at Hale Luana in the suite June 24-30th. I spent months online searching for the perfect rental and found it here. The house was very clean and full of goodies - stereo, TV, binoculars, travel guides and magazines, paperbacks, and a kitchen that was well supplied. There is filtered water for drinking and in the icemaker. The fridge is full of all kinds of condiments, the cupboards full of every item you would ever need. The grounds are beautiful - we went to Turtle Bay Resort one day and notice the gardens were nothing compared to Hale Luana. We spent the mornings planning our day on the lanai gazing at the breathless views. We packed up the rental car and headed to the beach with umbrella, chairs, ice chest, boogie boards and snorkles. Sunset Beach was a favorite and only a few minutes away. We enjoyed returning to the home for a relaxing dinner. Louise was great, we didn't see her much but had her contact number in case we needed something. She has much knowledge of the area and was a source of "local" information. Loved the view from the bedroom, woke to the local rooster the first night but that's part of the North Shore experience. The house has several ceiling fans, including over the bed. The pool was refreshing in the evening after a long day at the beach. We rode the bikes to the grocery store one day. Waimea Bay, Sharks Cove and Turtle Beach were very close by. We thought we wanted a place on the beach but discovered Hale Luana was perfect, can't wait to visit again. LOVED IT! We ended our vacation at another VRBO rental on the other side of the island and couldn't stop comparing it to this home. We hope to visit again soon. Thank you, Louise for a fabulous vacation stay.

Louise thank you for making our stay the most enjoyable experience. After doing a lot of research on various vacation rentals, the Hale Luana caught my eye and it was my first and only choice. The suite was perfect for our family of 3. We all felt very comfortable and safe. The owner takes a lot of pride in the up keep of her grounds. Lush greenier surrounded the suite which made for it's own natural privacy. We enjoyed waking up to the ocean view. Inside everything was neat and clean and had all the necessities provided. Beach equipment was provided to include chairs, bogie boards, and toys. We are already planning for our next visit and will come back to this vacation rental. Thank you again. Nice Stay

Date of Stay: 06/06/11 Review Submitted: 11/19/11

I thought the grounds were lovely and the location was great...my problem was with the caretaker...she actually lives above you and her staircase is in the middle of your dining room: beware you will see her come and go in your living room....I woke up one morning and she was watering her plants....and I was just in a robe...coming in to get coffee...I felt that this is not explained that well in the description of the property. Also she walked in on a dinner that I was having with friends, and she repermanded me for leaving the slider door open for a minute, going out to the BBQ....she is always there keeping her eye on you...very weird!!!.

Owner response:Hale Luana, in fact, doesn't work well without a car; it's about 3 miles to the supermarket and is uphill on a private road, not on the the bus route. This review id from a guest who would have been happier in a rental without a caretaker. If one reads all the other reviews, this review simply doesn't make sense - it's ... "weird". I will not describe the visit, but will say her companion left a thank you note saying they'd had a "wonderful time".

Sisters vacation here for a week in both units was the best vacation ever! Private, safe, clean, all the amenities. We used all the kitchen tools, coolers, pool, jaccuzzi, beach chairs, boogie boards, etc. We even got to see whales from the incredible view - an unexpected surprise. Perfect location close access to Sunset beach and Turtle bay and Shark's cove. Highly recommended.

Owner response:Thank you for your great review. (Note: Hale Luana can't be recommended for pet owners; no pets are allowed, as stated on the webpage.)

My husband and I (both in our late 30s) just spent the first week of April in the Sunset Suite at this incredible property. The photos online do not even do it justice. We had a beautiful, relaxing time. The place is perfectly maintained, the views are unbeatable - you can just sit and lose yourself in wave after perfect wave - and your have a comprehensive vista of the whole Miracle Mile. Humpback whales were migrating along the coast, so we had that as an extra special treat. Every morning we made our coffee and sat in the hot-tub (which also has a view). Every afternoon we played in the pool, napped on the lanai, walked down to the ocean for sunset (literally 5 min walk)...it was just stunning. We saved tons of cash by cooking and eating there, too! We got a real North Shore vibe, and were far enough up to be away from traffic noise. I would rent this place again in a heartbeat. I considered other places that were right on the oceanfront - and having been there - this was WAY better. Perfect views, perfect vibe. Louise, our caretaker was there to accomodate our needs but never in our way. Thanks Louise, thanks Hawaii. We will be back!

The North Shore of Hawaii is an amazing place for anyone who has eyes to see and a heart that yearns for the sensual beauty of nature. Hale Luana only adds to the amazement and the beauty of Hawaii. Whether you stay in the suite or in the studio, your time will be a wonderfully spent. The view from either unit is spectacular, the grounds are magnificent, the interior is brilliantly decorated and the exterior is heavenly. The caretaker and owner, who has an apartment on the top floor is a plus. She is friendly, respectful and a wealth of information on just about anything to do with the surrounding areas and beyond. I plan to return this spring and then again and again. i have highly recommended it to friends and will, with certainty, continue to do so. Make it a point and put this on you list of "need to do".

Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful review. Just two corrections: a car is really needed (grocery store is about 3 miles away, Hale Luana is uphill on a private road, not on the bus route). I'm the caretaker only, not the owner.

What a peaceful piece of paradise. The studio was the perfect fit for our week stay on the North Shore. Louise was very helpful and available if needed. We saw 5 whales from our view over Sunset Beach on our first morning.. what a way to start the day. We took an amazing helicopter ride with James, which had us tour most of Oahu,, where we saw even more whales and other spectacular views. I highly recommend booking a flight with James over any of the other helicopter tours. The price was better and he will venture off course to seek whales and other exciting views. We hope to return Again. Cheers!

We stayed in the suite for a week in November and absolutely fell in love with the place! Love the views, loved using the pool and jacuzzi, and Louise was very helpful. She stays on the upper floor and is there if you need her, but doesn't crowd you and gives you plenty of space and privacy. The suite is really nice and relaxing and everything is well kept. Didn't even notice the couple below us in the studio. You are right in the heart of the North Shore, so there's plenty to see if you like to be away from all the tourists, and it's just a short drive to Honolulu/Waikiki when you are ready to do the touristy things. Weather was great, just a couple spots of rain, but very nice temps. It's their winter now, so trade winds were up and so was the surf - surf competitions ongoing. Didn't see whales, but was told that they were early this year from someone who went to Kaui. The place has all you need to go to the beach, snorkel, boogie board, bike, and all linens and kitchen items are provided. You just need some groceries and your toiletries and you are set! I highly recommend Hale Luana and will go again if we ever get the chance to go back to Oahu.

If you are looking for a place to stay that is out of the hustle and bustle of the city, only minutes away from the great beaches of North Shore, and totally private, this is the place. When we arrived at the house we actually thought there was a mistake... How could this be true... This wonderfull house was far over what we were expecting. When you make a booking online, you always look at the picture telling yourself that owners always try to make their house look more beautifull than what they really are. Here it's the opposite, pictures are under what, the envirtonement, the house, the view really are. This place is like a dream. We had such a great time staying in this beautifull house. We came in 2010, and we will be back in 2011... Thank you very much for everything Louise. Aloha and see you soon. Guillaume, Anne , Laetitia & Cristian.

Bravo!!! Hale Luana is a job VERY well done!

Guest: Emily (McKinney, TX)
Date of Stay: 09/26/10 Review Submitted: 10/12/10

Louise & Hale Luana Owners: Bravo!!! A job well done! Our vacation was superb, and it was all because of you guys. I finally have unburied my desk after our return home from Oahu and I wanted to take a moment to thank you for EVERYTHING. It all started the night my husband called your number to get more info about booking. We had whittled our choices of rentals down to about 5, but after Louise took our call, our decision was made. She offered valuable information about all our travel details regarding Hawaii, from grocery shopping and Luaus all the way to clothing to pack. She was our one stop shop of answers. Most importantly, what we took from that phone call was her willingness, actually her eagerness, to accommodate and make our stay perfect. And that it was. We arrived late one Sunday afternoon with an exhausted 1-yr old in tow. Too tired to even go buy coffee for the morning, she offered up her own, and it was the good stuff too! The house was dreamy, big wrap-around windows that made us feel like we were living in a tree house amongst the palms. You could hear all the waves and the wind of the beach just blocks away, yet never had the desire to leave the comfort of Hale Luana. I told Louise you MUST get new photos because future travelers need to see the real beauty of your home. The wood floors, the fancy kitchen, the balconies and windows that never end. We just couldn’t get enough of it and it was actually a struggle to make ourselves leave the house to see the sites. When we did, of course, we ran everything by Louise (who by the way we never saw or heard come or go but who took my call each and every time) for approval. On several occasions we actually canceled our original plan to go with Louise’s. Every time it was a BIG WIN. Whether it was a restaurant or Luau recommendation, Louise had the answer, actually she always had a couple different choices for us. I could ramble for days about the property and certainly our new friend, Louise, but I’d rather make it brief enough that you’ll read the whole letter. Thank you so much for providing a property that always feels like home, with added luxury, abundant privacy and help if and when you decide you need it. You have made such a lovely paradise and we hope to return soon. In the meantime we will spread the word and tell all our friends how spectacular our trip was. Please keep doing what you do and don’t change a thing. Blessings. Emily

We could have stayed forever!

Date of Stay: 07/17/10 Review Submitted: 08/28/10

What a unique house! It's absolutely beautiful and architecturally awesome. The property is huge. The photos on the VRBO site don't even do it justice. We stayed in the Sunset Suite with two adults and a teenage son who slept in the office, which is actually a perfectly sized bedroom. We were a tad bit wary about having the caretaker on the property with us - just not sure how that worked from a privacy point of view - but honestly we didn't even know she was there. And when we did finally meet, it was a pleasure to visit with her (Louise) and learn about the beautiful gardens that surround the property. Back to the house... we felt so comfortable and at home at Hale Luana. (We kept wishing it were our own!) Cocktails on the deck, watching the waves and the surfers and sunsets, plucking fresh oranges from the trees, and the best view you'll ever have while taking a shower - no kidding! This was our first time visiting Hawaii, and while we made a few trips into Honolulu, we were always anxious to get back to the peaceful North Shore and kick back at Hale Luana. We visited Maui after leaving Oahu, and stayed in a beachfront "luxury condominium" at a much higher rate with zero personality. We found ourselves longing for Hale Luana and its personal touches, funky style, beautiful woodwork, incredible views, music library, beach toys, orange trees and gardens, and totally laid-back feel. (Did we mention the roosters? They aren’t on the property, but are nearby. They are a riot, and their crowing soon became a welcomed part of our morning routine; but if you are uptight about that sort of thing, then you should probably be forewarned.) You must eat at least once, if not more often, at Ted's Bakery. Shark's Cove is also nearby for a fun and tasty trailer-made meal. There are also several restaurants down the road in Haleiwa. A Foodland grocery store is a few miles away to stock the fridge. There is a bike path /walkway that follows the shoreline for some great jogging. Walking to the beach is easy, and taking the car is also an option. If we have the chance to visit Hawaii again, Hale Luana will definitely be our home base.

Fantastic location, beautiful views...watch whales breaching from the deck in the morning. Accomodations were first class, very private with well maintained pool (you will use it as you can't swim on the beaches on the big surf days) and jacuzzi (we used it every night). Louise very helpful, always around if you need anything but unobstrusive (we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves). Made our way to Waikiki for a day and that was tons. North shore is definitely we're its at...few hotels, far fewer people and a much more laid back feel. We'll definitely be back.

Hale Luana is a magnificent home: spectacular view of the ocean, beautiful garden, great pool and jacuzzi, and everything you can possibly need inside a vacation home. The location is the best, just above the beautiful Sunset Beach and bike path that runs along the North Shore (all on flat terrain, in the shade, away from the street, and with constant opportunities to access the best beaches). My family and I loved every second of our stay. We could not recommend it more.

We have always stayed on the water...last summer we didn't and stayed in the suite at Hale Luana. What a wonderful place! The suite is perfect for a family. Picking oranges for juice every morning is wonderful. Can't think of anything we needed (for 17 days)or wanted there. Louise (the caretaker) is on site she provides great help and is a good person. The setting is secluded and truly resonates the peace implied by its namesake.

We had a fantastic time at Hale Luana. The photos on the website are very representative of this beautiful home and gorgeous grounds. Hale Luana is a 10-minute walk from the beach, and we enjoyed the extra privacy. If you visit the north shore when there are large waves (something worth seeing!), you won't be able to swim, so the pool at this property is a great addition. Louise takes care of this home, and we were impressed by how helpful--yet unobtrusive--she was. When we go back--not if, but WHEN--we would love to stay at Hale Luana again.

My Finance and I stayed at Hale Luana in September 2009. What a beautiful house and breath taking views. If you're looking to get the feel of he North shore, but a bit removed from the sometimes busy Kam Hwy this is the place for you. A 10 min walk to Ted's bakery and 7 min walk to Sunset beach Hale Luana is in the perfect location along the north shore. Louise is absolutely fantastic as the houses keeper. She is very friendly and offers up many things to do, if your looking for that. I suggest the Botanical Gardens and dinner and or lunch at the golf course. Outside of that just enjoy one of the most amazing places I've ever been. One benefit to the house is the pool. IF you're on the north shore during a large swell there is not much beach swimming offered, so the pool came in handy for us. However, if there is a large swell I suggest you spend time on the beach watching the waves and having your jaw drop at the surfers and all their beauty. This was one of the best trips we've had, and we will back again. Aloha, Joel & Wendy

This place was so incredible that I felt uncomfortable at first because it felt so much like I was in someones beautiful home. We enjoyed a delightful 3 week vacation at this place. Everything we could ever need. Privacy, beautiful grounds, pool, fully equipped kitchen, internet, friendly help from Louise. If you are looking for a home away from home, a rustic but elegant place, this is the place for you. Absolutely would recommend this 100% Easy to cook at and my favorite. . Pick oranges off the tree and make fresh squeezed juice. . . Every morning. Awesome.
