Accommodations:  House, 5 Bedrooms, 5 Baths (Sleeps 10)

This one of a kind stone lodge is located in the very heart of the Sonoma Wine Country, the glorious Valley of the Moon. It is situated at the mouth of a granite canyon which becomes a state park, Sugar Loaf. The great room with mammoth old-world stone fireplace soars above 18 feet. The locally quarried stone walls are over 1' thick, providing luxurious natural air conditioning. All the front-facing first floor windows bifold back to open completely to the rural splendor; secluded and picturesque. There is an outdoor fire-pit (can also be used for cooking) under 150 foot tall fir trees in addition to a propane grill.

The house is 4000 square feet including 4 bedrooms/4 bathrooms in main house and 1/1 in a separate guest cottage with its own full kitchen. Complete with 2 stone fireplaces, chemical free lap pool, waterfall, spa(hot tub), steam shower and exercise equipment. There are endless views to the forested peaks of the nearby state park. It is a 5 minute walk to famous wineries; hiking and horseback riding are just up the road.

This lodge is equally splendid in summer or winter. When the rainy season starts in late fall, the nearby creek fills significantly and rushes by to the valley floor. It can sound like Niagara Falls is not far away; truly delightful. The nights are often cool enough to use the fireplaces and firepit even in the summer but they are wonderful in the fall winter and early spring. This is an interior designer's private residence; original country French antiques abound. The very large professional kitchen is fully equipped with all amenities and has an adjacent 14 foot wine bar with temperature controlled refrigeration. Elaborate stereo system, phone/intercom system, wifi . Gardener included, housekeeper and/or chef can be arranged. The world famous Kenwood Inn and Spa is just down the lane. Well appointed for entertaining, but please know we cannot accommodate large parties due to local zoning laws. We do not wish to disturb our neighbors in this peaceful, private area.

12 miles from Sonoma Plaza, 10 miles to Santa Rosa; 30 minutes to the Russian River and Napa valley, 1.25 hours to San Francisco,Oakland or Sacramento airports. Santa Rosa airport is only 20 minutes away and now has nonstop flights from LAX, Las Vegas and Seattle.

Wine Country Stone Lodge in State Park

Year Purchased: 1998

Why the Owner Chose Sonoma

This location is in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, also known as the Valley of the Moon. To me it is the most beautiful section of either the Sonoma or Napa Valleys. This lot is located in a canyon, the only such geographical particulars of its type in Sonoma. The Canyon provides cool and shade in the relative extreme heat of the Sonoma summers. Everything is green and cool in the shelter of Adobe Canyon in the summer and fall while the Valley is burnt and arid, grass-less hills and dusty heat. Views are spectacular to the state park that surrounds this rural location. It is so dark at night you can't see to walk without the moon and the stars are huge and ever-so bright. The house construction was started in about 1949 by a crazy naturalist who continuously added on to the property for the next 10 years or so. They did a lot of hunting in the valley up till the 1960's. There is a cement block shed behind the house that was a walk in cooler where they hung the deer and mountain lion carcasses. We still have some mountain lion in the area -but they stay up in the park, never any problem. If they find any bear they trap them and take them up to Lake County. What is now the guest cottage was actually built to house racoons - luckily they had long departed when I took possession in 1998. The original owner had also started a tunnel under the little Adobe Canyon Rd so all the animals (who he sometimes hunted) could cross to get water in the creek. This is rather an indication of his eccentricity as even today there is not any traffic to speak of on this road for it has no outlet beyond the state park itself. I gutted the entire house in 1999. The trusses and wood ceiling in the great room were put in at that time.

The Unique Benefits at this House

The uniqueness of the solid stone-walled lodge is beyond compare. The kitchen is quite large and is a unique experience, part of one vast great room measuring over 1000 square feet with splendid views. With adjoining 14' French wine bar and enormous fireplace, this unique structure affords a one-of-a-kind gathering place for friends and family.

Owner's Map of Sonoma

I am interior designer trained in both the US and France. In 1999 I totally gutted and rebuilt this solid stone house, making sure it retained all the beauty of the original structure but all the comforts of a brand new home. Because my background is specifically in hospitality design, I think you will find that I have done well to anticipate the guests' needs as they come to the house for profound rest and relaxation as well as to partake of the wonders of the Valley of The Moon.

    • Ten family members gathered at the lovely stone house in Kenwood for our son's wedding in Santa Rosa. The house is well located for visits to wineries as well as Sonoma and other wine areas. We enjoyed the privacy and quiet as well as many good times spent around the table, in the kitchen, on the patio and drinking wine in front of a roaring fire. The house was pretty well equiped and the owner easy to work with and accommodating. We hope to rent this property again.

    • This is an absolutely beautiful home in a stunning and serene setting. Everything was as advertised...in fact better. It was absolutely perfect for our party of nine adults. The kitchen is fully equipped, so much so that we chose to cook and eat in on several evenings, enjoying the dining area which is surrounded by windows that open up and make you feel like you're outdoors. We also enjoyed many fires in the enormous stone fireplace in the main room. The house is extremely well located in the heart of Sonoma wine country...although there are several excellent wineries near by, it also allowed us easy access to all areas of Sonoma and Napa. Blair is a pleasure to work with and provides lots of excellent, up to date information on local restaurants and other activities. In addition there is a very complete "owner's manual" at the house which tells you everything you need to know. Our group would highly recommend this property...we had an excellent stay and would love to return again!

    • My family has rented large elegant homes all over the US and carribean over the last 15 years. Blair's beautiful home is very special. In some ways, better than any home we have rented. With first class wineries every where you look, this location and this house is a winner! Lets start with the house... The great room is truely "GREAT"! Huge in every dimension, it's stone and "monster post and beam frame" absorbed our 16 person "dinner party" with out a care (only 75 minutes from San Franciso 6 persons came up mid afternoon and drove home in the late evening!). The fire place is almost "walk in". The sublime built-in 8 speaker stereo system spun a dreamy candle lit evening of music and conversation. The kitchen, with fantastic hanging blown glass lights, and an "over the top" french provincial cook hood, is open to the great room. With stools at the wine bar, guests can over look the "workings" going on in the kichen. The floor plan allowed my wife and her helpers, (me), to prepare the meal and still enjoy converstion with our geusts. The kitchen also has every gadget you could want. A 6 burner (plus a grill) "wolf?" stove, heat lamps in the hood, a plate warmer, 48" built -in frig, 2 dish washers, 2 sinks, 2 islands (one with about a 10'x6' chopping block on top) 2 wine frigs (1 for white and one for red of course!) With 5 bedrooms and 5 baths (including the guest cottage) there is no need for sofa surfing. All the beds are excellent firm beds (1 full bed is too small for a full grwon couple). Blairs flair for french style decor adds an unusual and memorable experience, with high qualtiy furnishings through out. Outside, the french doors from the great room and dining room lead to a large stone patio over looking a dark blue colored pool and waterfall. Beyond sits a large green lawn, private gardens and a nice fire pit with chairs. There is good privacy from the neighbors. The house sits on a very pretty, litely traveled, walkable country road. It's a seven minute country drive to Safeway, just out side of Santa Rosa. Twenty lushes minutes brings you into the gorgeous town of Sonama. A charming new England style town with a "park square center" and some great restaraunts around it. Enjoy! Mark of Pasadena

    • Beautiful and spacious house, with wonderful features - as advertised - that made our stay comfortable and fun. We accommodated a number of guests easily. Large living area, with a terrific kitchen. And the location is quite convenient to wineries and the town of Sonoma itself. Blair is easy to work with!

    • Wonderful luxury home perfect for our group of eight. Beautifully decorated and fully equipped with everything we needed. The open floor plan of kitchen/living/dining rooms worked extremely well. We really enjoyed the large indoor fireplace and the new outdoor firepit too. A great location--private but with many Sonoma County wineries nearby; and a very convenient location if you plan to visit wineries in Napa and Healdsburg too. We simply had a wonderful time in part due to the comforts of this home. I would certainly rent the property again. Thank you Blair!

    • Paradise found! Beautiful canyon setting among the redwoods, this house has absolutely everything the discriminating visitor to Sonoma could possibly ask for. The owner provided the most complete house information booklet I've ever seen. The photo shown on the VRBO doesn't do justice to this wonderful escape!
