I had a most enjoyable week at the end of September at this delightful cottage. There is a beautiful yard with several flower gardens designed and planted by Elaine. Because of the time of year, they were mostly gone by but you can see in the photos how lovely they are. A labor of love for certain. There are many interesting things to do in the area, I discovered a fascinating cemetery in Barre called Hope Cemetery which has some of the most unusual and personal monuments anywhere in the world. Another is the Art Gallery and Dog Museum built by the artist, Stephen Huneck, just outside of St. Johnsbury . Of course, the scenery is beautiful wherever you go. No matter where I roamed, I was always happy to get back to the cottage. Elaine and Rod were so friendly and helpful that I felt as if life long friends lived just down the road. Thank you both for a wonderful week.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, age 55+.
Owner response: We want the Garden Cottage to be a place for people to relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds them. We strive to make your stay memorable and a place that you will remember fondly and perhaps want to visit again. Elaine & Rod

We just came up here for a couple of days to get away from it all and play in the snow a bit and this was a great place to do it. The house really is immaculate but well equipped with everything you could want for cooking, etc. and the heat kept us warm and toasty on a -2 degree night. Elaine and Rod were very helpful and friendly--they tipped us off to lovely Long Pond which is just around the road, and we took the most beautiful walk there at dusk. Greensboro doesn't have anywhere to have dinner, but even in winter the drives to Hardwick and Craftsbury weren't so bad...Glad I had winter drive mode on my car, though, since many of the roads aren't paved up here! Anyway, had a wonderful time and would love to return in the summer or fall. Thank you so much!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children.

We stayed here for 4 nights to attend a relative's wedding in Greensboro. This was our first Vermont visit and we were not disappointed with the beauty of the surrounding countryside. The night skies were amazing! WOW!! Who knew that the Big Dipper was really so BIG? It doesn't look that big in Cali! The cottage description is very accurate and the house is clean, cozy and comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped and that made meal preparation very easy. (And the ice-maker works, too!) Elaine's gardens were well-tended & pretty, even as fall approached. The listing photos do not do justice to the meadow's beauty. The proximity to the wedding venue made this a wonderful find and we didn't have to be around the wedding party until it was time to tie the knot! The groom's grandmother and parents came to visit us at the cottage a few hours before the wedding. They were so impressed by this find! They kept asking us how we found it, how much it was, and if they could switch accommodations with us. 87-yr. old Grandma spent most of her time walking through the gardens and meadow exclaiming how pretty everything was. She picked up the lone red maple leaf on the lawn and put it in safe-keeping for return to her home on the West Coast. Our thanks to Elaine and Rod for their hospitality and diligence in keeping up the cottage and its grounds. Our only disappointment was in our timing. It would have been great to have been there when the fall colors were in full display. We'll certainly recommend this cottage for "leaf peepers" and nature lovers who wish to experience some of Vermont's natural beauty without the bustle of Stowe and throngs of tourists.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, age 55+.

This small ranch-style house is very comfortable and efficient -- as it is described in the listing. The kitchen is well equipped and the house lends itself to easy living. The house is surrounded by well-kept green lawns that invite children's play, and it is set among attractive flower beds. The hosts are welcoming and eager to help with any problems that arise; they live nearby. I would be glad to recommend this property to a friend or relative who wants a quiet vacation in the country near a pleasant Vermont town.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you for the review, as always, we try to make everyones stay at the Garden Cottage enjoyable and memorable. We love people and and try to make them happy.

To Whom it May concern, I have recently stayed for a month at the above listing, an idyllic cottage in Greensboro, Vermont. I had been a part-time resident in Vermont, until my husband's death in 2001. I arrived without knowing anyone, except a former acquaintance. Elaine Cole with her husband, introduced me to many persons I now think of loving and dear friends whom I shall visit whenever my professional and personal life allows. Elaine and Rod to me define the meaning of the phrase: "gracious hosts." Their kindness, hospitality and concern for me and those friends who briefly visited me was echoed by the comfort of their cottage and the care they took to ensure that gardens and home provided their guest with comfort and security and kindness. As I felt the stress of my professional life disappear as I painted, walked, visited the amazing and awe inspiring scenery that comprises in this region, painted or spent time in the many pleasures of life that can be shared with the kind, welcoming and highly interesting folks in Greensboro and its nearby communities, I again realised why I have always loved Vermont so much, and why I long to return. As often as possible. Thank you Elaine and Rod, for being there for me and allowing me to share your home and life with you during that special time.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+.

My daughter and I stayed for a week. She didn't want to leave. I was born in Vermont and loved being back. We couldn't ask for more as the house had even more conveniences/utilities than we have at home, especially in the kitchen. The area is very quiet, out of the way yet close to whatever you may need. The owners are very accommodating and friendly. Love the fact that there was a farm nearby. We absolutely loved the place, it was perfect. We enjoyed our stay very much.Recommended for: People with disabilities, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, age 55+.

We enjoyed our three weeks here in July 2008.The house was comfortable and well equipped. The bedrooms and single bath were quite small, but worked fine for us as a couple. Probably would also be OK for family with one or two children (willing to share double bed). We loved the quiet location on a back road But we were less than 10 minutes away from the center of Greensboro, where we could buy eveything we needed at Willey's Store or at a great Farm Stand just south of town. As music lovers, we appreciated being near The Craftsbury Chamber Players Thursday evening concerts in Hardwick Also caught two concerts at the Greensboro church. We loved the peace and beauty of the Garden Cottage with its great flowers and views, and stargazing in the field behind the cottage in the evenings. The owners live just a mile down the road, and were always helpful.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you, Kate and Ron, for your review. We really enjoyed meeting you, as we have everyone else who stayed at our house. Our goal is to make your stay as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. We hope to see you again!! Thanks, Elaine and Rod
