Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

Your hosts, Ed & Dawn, moved to Julian in 1999 from Silicon Valley to purchase a B & B and we thoroughly enjoy being innkeepers! We are active in the community though the Chamber of Commerce and Merchant's Association.

Why the Owner Chose Julian

We purchased Black Oak Cabin in 2003. It is proximate to our home and business and we feel we're able to better manage the property and attend to the needs of our guests while affording them the privacy they seek. It's a quick drive or a 20 minute walk to downtown Julian. There are great hiking trails, picnicing, and Lake Cuyamaca is a mere 20 minute drive away.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Black Oak Cabin is situated on a gently sloping, wooded hillside. We've planted (and continue to plant) gardens for your relaxing pleasure and outfitted them with a hammock, swings, chaise lounges, and picnic tables. Birds abound during the day, including the wild turkeys, and many nights you are serenaded by the local "chorus frogs". Julian sees all four seasons, including some snow in the winter, and some amazingly clear nights for stargazing...the Milky Way is still up there! The Chamber of Commerce, Merchant's Association, and numerous other groups host a variety of events throughout the year including music, art, theatre, sports for the pleasure of the locals and visitors alike.

We thought that we would just get out of town for the night, and give our favorite "innkeepers" a little business, after the terrible recent fires. We got so much more than we bargained for! The Black Oak Cabin is utterly charming. It is peaceful and quiet; just the place to escape city life. The decor is perfect and our hosts thought of everything, right down to toddler utensils and sippy cups! The outdoor areas are delightful, with many different areas to sit alone, or with a group. Since we had a rambunctious 2 year old, we didn't get to experience the hammock-for two, but we will save that for next time, and there will most certainly be a next time. Having now experienced your Bed & Breakfast and now the Black Oak Cabin, we don't know which one we love more! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality and keen attention to detail. As always, we will tell all our friends about you!

After spending 7 months apart, this is exactly what to C.O. ordered. To be able to hold my Marine in peace. We have been able to relax and enjoy each other. The cabin has such a homey feel & it welcomed us warmly. The perfect hide-a-way and we will be back. Thank you!

Ed & Dawn, Easter Sunday 2005 will be very memorable for my entire family. Not only did we greatly enjoy the cabin, it was also our baby's first Easter. The meticulous accommodation & kid friendly atmosphere allowed my wife and I to further enjoy the getaway. Thanks for the popcorn, cocoa, and sage soap. We will see you again.

I kept waiting for something to be wrong with this place: lumpy mattresses, no hot water, not enough blankets...but no! As Mary Poppins would say, "Practically perfect in every way!" (ok, so a garbage disposal would have been nice!) I'm thinking of not recommending you to friends and family. Why limit my chances of coming back year after year?! Thank you, Dawn & Ed, for a beautiful stay. We'll be back. (Innkeeper note: garbage disposals and septic systems don't work well together, unfortunately, DG)

The kids started calling it "our cabin" right away. Allison loved the bird watching, and Max loved the dirt. You thought of everything! Dawn, you bring hostessing up to an art form, making our stay homey, comfortable, and a tough luxurious. In the words of the immortal Arnold, "I'll be back."

Ed & Dawn, Thank you so much for accommodating us in such short notice. This is the first time in our marriage that we've gotten away, what a great place! The cabin is a peaceful getaway, we will definitely come again. Can't wait to recommend it to friends. This weekend was a blessing from The Lord. Thank you again!

We could not have asked for a more private, comfortable retreat from our daily worries than the one we experienced here with the birds, wild turkeys, (neighboring) cats, frogs, and other wildlife at Black Oak Cabin. We will treasure these memories forever and look forward to returning.

What a romantic week we spent here at the Black Oak Cabin! Like a second honeymoon, really. We enjoyed a fresh pot of coffee each morning, followed by a leisurely breakfast cooked by "moi" of eggs, hash browns, bacon, & sometimes a piece of apple pie. Gary would read the newspaper on the back patio , & I would practice my yoga on the front porch. Then we spent the afternoon exploring Julian and visiting with the local shopkeepers. My favorite time was preparing the evening meal. Gary was in charge of the barbeque, & I was in charge of the music & wine. We put together some lovely dining experiences for ourselves ~ just the two of us. It was all quite sensuous. Speaking of which, the bed was like climbing onto a cloud. Surrounded by all the softness & lying next to the one I love was heavenly. Did I mention romantic? We'll be taking home with us memories that will continue to brighten every day of the rest of our lives.

Dawn & Ed, Thank you for this haven! We try to come every year, sometimes in Black Oak Cabin, sometimes we enjoy the rooms in the B & B. You're our first choice when we decide to get away! You two are the perfect hosts. You've created and incredible place to relax, unwind, and remember that life should be enjoyed! We are here to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary... Yep, five years already. We stayed here for the first time in 2003, than again when we were married in 2004. And now we are here in 2009. Time just seems to get away from us! Thank you for this place, this wonderful home away from home! You're both so wonderful. Someday we'll bring the whole family...Or, maybe not, maybe we'll just keep this to ourselves! With Love.

Dear Ed & Dawn, Thank you so much for the wonderful relaxing weekend in this lovely cabin. This place is gorgeous and so homey. It is so nice & clean & well equipped. I also want to thank you very much for allowing my daughter to play with the guitar - now I will get her one!! We will be back in the near future. I don't get many mini vacations & will treasure this one for a long time. Love & peace to you both.
