The Juniper House
Newly available Bolinas retreat, now with a private, outdoor, hot tub. Juniper House is multileveled, and architecturally designed for the site with her face to the sun, she is a jewel of proportion and light with a deck off the kitchen for a morning cup of coffee, and summer BBQ's. Lots of soul and character in this post and beam country house built of recycled barn wood with custom stained glass windows and a cozy, propane fireplace. Throughout the house you will find dark, rustic, wide plank, hardwood floors.
Designed in a collaboration of well known architects Valentino Agnoli & Arthur Pearson, Juniper House is illuminated by three 25' skylights. She has 4 levels and each level relates to the others, allowing you to stand at the treetop level and speak to friends seated in the first level living room. The selections of wood, craftsmanship and joinery is truly beautiful and amazing.
The kitchen, whose 5' windows above the sink, overlooking the sunset sky, will have people competing to wash dishes, also has a window seat for dreamy morning moments. The bathroom begs for long soaks in the tub, from which you see only pampas grass and stars overhead outside the windowed-wall, an experience not to be missed.
The Juniper House retreat has a way of welcoming you. The main living room offers possibilities of an evening with your favorite music, nestled into couches at the fireplace, a nice way to contemplate your day spent at the nearby beaches or hiking the many trails in West Marin. Or you might choose to watch one of over 100 movies from the house collection in the entertainment loft, that is if you aren't seduced by a book & one of the two window seats in the kitchen or treetop levels.
For your comfort, 4 guests are recommended and 6 guests, the maximum number of guests (excluding your dog companions).
Situated at the end of a graveled lane on the "Big Mesa" of Bolinas, in a quiet valley, surrounded by natural landscaping, Juniper House just seems to belong to the wild fields around it. You can expect to see deer and quail families, humming birds and to awaken to the bird song of many species.
Located near the small laid-back village of Bolinas, which lies at the mouth of the Bolinas lagoon, at the foot of Mt. Tamalpias State Park and the Audubon Canyon Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary. To the north we are bordered by the Point Reyes National Sea Shore, Muir Woods, home of the giant redwoods is just a 1/2 hour drive south on scenic highway one and has spectacular cliffs and views of the Pacific Ocean.
The Juniper House is only a short, ten minute walk to Agate beach, a secluded treasure. It's Bolinas' premier sunset beach and a great place for beachcombing, finding agates, tide pooling, long relaxing walks and bird watching.
This quiet retreat is a place to unwind and recharge, away from it all. Because it is owned by a local family, you will be provided with knowledgeable information about our local activities, restaurants, and events. Staying at the Juniper House means that you'll experience morning bird song as it fills the valley & you'll see quail & deer wander through the garden any time of day.
- Suitability
- Pet Friendly : We welcome your well behaved dogs & request that our guests send us a photo of their dogs for our "Juniper House Dog Guest Journal". Rates are additional $30 per night for weekend/$10 per night month long stays/$20 per night all other stays. Your dog will have a dog treat awaiting their arrival. After all, you get champagne & chocolate!
- Kid Friendly : This is not a "kid-proof" house and is multileveled, so not recommended for children who are crawling to age 4.
- Minimum Age Limit for Renters : Not for crawling tots to 4 year olds (infants and 4 and over are fine)

Audubon Canyon Ranch: Bird & Wildlife Sanctuary & the Bolinas Lagoon offer great oppertunities for Bird Watching, Seal Watching & Kayacking. Mt Tamalpias State park & Pt. Reyes National Sea Shore have miles of trails with fabulous views, Stinson Beach's white sands are in the neighborhood, Bolinas Bike shop and Surf Shop rent bikes and surf gear.5 Brooks offers horseback riding through parklands & to the beach, The Bolinas musum is the only fine arts museum in Marin County & there are also several galleries in the area.

We rented this house for a 4 day getaway with our 11-month old baby and had a wonderful stay. The house managed to be both romantic and baby-friendly, with baby gates and cot provided - the house itself is even nicer than the pictures show, and we were greeted with the scent of freshly-cut tea roses when we walked in - Mesa had put fresh flowers in every room! We loved the deep bathtub and big picture window and we loved soaking in the outdoor hot tub in the moonlight. The kitchen is well-appointed and (unusual for a rental) had very high end cookware - which made it really nice to cook a leisurely dinner while looking out the big picture window to the meadow beyond. This place was just made for relaxing... I only hope we can go back at some point!
