Why the Owner Chose Dixon
We wanted a project for retirement like raising apples plus we are kayakers and rafters, skiers, hikers, golfers and love the meditative atmosphere of all the trees and flowing El Rio Grande.
Owner's Map of Dixon
We bought El Nido as our retirement spot. Hope to become a gentleman farmer. The wife says I will make the farmer part. Fell in love with the river, the orchard , the neighbors and the down home atmosphere of rural northern NM. We count our blessings each time we stay here.

The El Nido rental is our favorite place to go for a getaway from Santa Fe. It is special to have a private beach and slice of the Rio Grande River to enjoy in the beautiful high desert of New Mexico. We especially enjoy all of the wild life we’ve seen along the river including eagles, otters, fireflies, bullfrogs, coyotes, hawks, ducks, swifts, bats and more. It is all magical whether we’re swimming, rafting or fishing during the day or telling good stories and cooking by fire at night. Our dogs have taken to the water like natural born swimmers. They and we love to ride the current downstream – kind of like surfing. The house is a well-designed new home that is spacious and cozy at the same time. It comes equipped with all of the amenities of home including a beautiful kitchen open to the living room and porch, fireplace, spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry room. Taos and Santa Fe are an easy drive for anyone wanting to experience our enchanting New Mexico culture. We highly recommend this house for anyone coming to visit Northern New Mexico.

The El Nido property is a wonderful opportunity to explore the beauty of Northern New Mexico. Nestled in an apple orchard alongside the Rio Grande, you can kick back and listen to the birds as you relax in the hammock by the river, explore trails alongside the river, swim in the river, watch the river - you get the idea - a perfect retreat from the stress of daily routines. If you feel the urge to actually leave the property you can explore nearby Taos or Santa Fe as well as points in between. The house has everything you need - from a well equipped kitchen, to a spacious master bedroom with jacuzzi, outdoor grill, lounge chairs, and a river ambiance that's hard to beat. We had a wonderful visit and heartily recommend the property - it is suitable for everyone from a couple looking for a secluded romantic weekend to a large family gathering & your dogs will have an unforgettable time swimming in the river!

I have been to the El Nido three time and all of them have surpassed my expectations so we keep going back. My family and I truly like to escape from reality when we take a vacation and this property does the trick. Whether we are sitting on the Rio Grande watching bald eagles fly along the river, enjoying walks in the orchard, or sitting on the upstairs balcony with hot chocolate listening to the coyotes, El Nido never disappoints. The kitchen is a wonderful space that looks right into the family room and is great for celebrating togetherness. All the bedrooms are wonderfully comfortable and the amenities of this house are second to none. The upstairs master suite is a wonderful retreat. The location of this rental is the perfect distance between Santa Fe and Taos and there is a local market in Dixon which is just 5 minutes away. In addition, there are three outstanding New Mexico wineries all within 15 minutes of this property. I can't say enough wonderful things about El Nido Del Rio Grande. I hope you have a chance to enjoy this retreat!

We were privileged to be able to spend 6 weeks in the lovely El Nido del Rio Grande last fall & were ever so pleased. It was our final fall and family reunion with our wonderful Mamacita and that makes it extra special. Our mom was 93, needing wheel chair accessibility and extra care, which the home allowed for easily. The accomodations were excellent, the location couldn't have been better, and the memories will never dim. We were also very blessed to have a beautiful wedding while we were there. The extraordinary setting along the Rio Grande was the back drop for a wonderful ceremony for our youngest sibling and her chosen mate. I could not recommend this place more highly! My only problem with recommending it is that I don't really want to share it with anyone else!!! It was a very special time that I hope to be able to repeat time after time after time. The location, nestled between Taos and Santa Fe, is a very peaceful setting and makes it very accessible to many activities.

We had my sister's wedding down by the river and it was just lovely. We hung paper lanterns from the beautiful, old tree and put up the wedding arch at the edge of the river. The house was spacious and yet cozy. It was decorated beautifully and was immaculate and had all the utensils and dishes that we wanted to use. We ate apples off the trees in the orchard; drove to Taos for an afternoon of gallery hopping; sang and told stories by a campfire down by the river and had a great time. We also visited 2 vineyards in the immediate area to taste the local wines. We ate several meals out at great restaurants near the house when we wanted to take a break from cooking. We would definitely recommend this wonderful house to others who want to be down by the river and yet near Taos and Santa Fe.

I have stayed here several times over the past couple years. It is a great escape with gorgeous views in all directions. In the winter, it is a welcome change of pace and scenery from the city. The large open kitchen and dining area was great for a group of six people to enjoy a leisurely week-end cooking, reading and playing games. We kept a fire going and rarely left the house, which was great. During the summer, we take advantage of the river access to raft/kayak "The Racecourse" - a popular 1/2 day trip on the Rio Grande. The house is about a mile downriver from the usual pull-out, so we just pull out at El Nido and grill out at the house or by the river. There is now a great co-op grocery store in Dixon - about 10 minutes away. Though small, it has most essentials, and is much closer than driving into Taos. There is also a winery and brew pub within a mile or so of the house for other needs. In response to the claim that the appliances were "moldy" - I have not seen this. However, the well water here (as in much of New Mexico) has very high mineral content. So dishwashers (in particular), washing machines, sinks and toilets are quickly and permanently stained by the water. It may be unsightly, but it is not mold and it is unavoidable.

We are enchanted with New Mexico after our stay at this home. Snuggled in between Santa Fe and Taos, just far enough from tourist hubbub but close enough to town for excellent cuisine, gallery hopping, and museums. Nearby hiking and skiing and hot mineral springs are also available. We found it a great location. The home is lovely with sunlight filling its lovely spaces and views of the mountains from most rooms. A short walk takes you to the Rio Grande River where we enjoyed breakfast each day. The well-equipped pleasant kitchen and the grill outdoors made meals at home a convenient alternative to dining out. Comfy beds with starlight nights made for peaceful sleeping and the call of the coyote enhanced the spirit of the Southwest. What a great home in a beautiful setting.

We found the home and location outstanding. The southwest style house was a refreshing and relaxing get-a-way. The house was clean, well equiped, and brightly lit. We also enjoyed the use of the river site. The close proximity to Taos and Santa Fe was a bonus, as well as two wineries and a brewery with great beer. We hope to stay here again next year!!!!

I wish I could say that I loved staying at El Nido. Unfortunately, I can’t. I love the area and have stayed in a nearby rental. My initial impression of the house was positive. While it was closer to the road than I had imagined (you can hear traffic from the downstairs bedrooms), the structure itself was quite beautiful and the interior was light-filled and pleasant (I found the posters all over the house hung with push pins tacky and sad but ignored it). We also appreciated the warmth of the neighbor who welcomed us. However, just below the surface, there needs much more care in the upkeep. Quite frankly, we found the house filthy. We had to wash all dishes and utensils by hand before using them. The dishwasher was so disgusting that I didn’t want to run it. The washing machine was moldy and disgusting as well (it smelled awful). It made me uncomfortable thinking about the cleanliness of the sheets and towels that we were using. We also had to vacuum the entire house (thank god there was a decent vacuum cleaner available) after we dropped the tip of a baby bottle on the carpet and found an unbelievable amount of hairs (dogs & human it seemed) attached to it. The fact that our friend's baby was crawling around such conditions was horrifying. We all tried to put up a good face about the situation and enjoy our hard-earned vacation but it was difficult. I should add that we’re not neat-freaks… we regularly rent vacation homes across the U.S. and understand that there are quirks and we’re willing to go along with various ups and downs. I have never written a negative review but there needs to be changes made before other renters stay at this house. Most of the changes seem very doable and just require some care – you need to find someone who knows how to clean a house. There are a number of small but important things, for instance, the shower curtain needs to be replaced – it was stiff with grime and the soap dispenser in the kitchen was somehow rancid. Another suggestion is to clean the clutter on the property, especially at the river – perhaps at one point it was bohemian or shabby-chic – but, with all the falling-apart and dirty furniture cluttering the area, it looks like a dump. The RV/mobile home sitting on the property with the adult son of the owner living in it (and not mentioned in the ad) doesn’t help either. And, with the addition of unknown people skinny dipping one morning, we were glad to leave.

We enjoyed our time. Our only negative comment is that the "beach" isn't really a beach. The water access was far less than we expected. The house was very nice, the kitchen was great for the meal prep we did. there were a fair number of bees entering between the post and ceiling beams at the corner of the patio. We were visited by Bruno, the golden lab on multiple occaisions and our dogs actually enjoyed that. It appeared that a bear or other critter attacked the garbage can both nights. We appreciate recyling but were confused as to whether or not we should leave aluminum in the recycle bin. We assumed NOT since the signage everywhere else was so specific but it might help to add a comment to the sign above the recycle bin about aluminum cans.
