This is absolutely the right place to dip yourself in the local culture. We had 4 fifty somethings in our group...and while staying at the house we turned into 30 somethings. The house was perfect for our relaxed style...local coffee in the growing sun...and late evening creative cooking and interesting drinks all to the sound of the soothing surf... a fabulous way to forget the frozen Midwest. Expect to nap in the patio chairs...it is unavoidable. Beds are comfortable...and yes there is continuous hot water for the shower. AC is perfect and handles any outside noise. Blender works up fine Pina Colatas. The house is well stocked with day trip information if you forget your Lonely Planet. The location is great to avoid the tourist traps while allowing easy access to the special things you really want to do. Porta Tuna is just 10 minutes away...hang around the fishing pier and get adopted within minutes by the locals. They will give you fishing bait [free] / huge conch shells [free] / and an opportunity to buy fresh fish + squid. If part of your vacation is rubbing elbows with the locals, start at Porta Tuna and stretch out from there. Culebra ferry is just 1.5 hours away and offers spectacular snorkeling and close deep water fishing. Be sure to consider the Kayaking through the Mangroves just west of Guayama [only 25 minutes away]. You must take in the Lechon [Pork Highway] just 45 minutes away on scenic turns. See, I told you the house location was nicely placed. The beach house itself and the location can only be topped by the local people. You will find everyone [absolutely everyone] in the south eastern corner of Puerto Rico to be friendly, helpful, honest and totally genuine. Expect to get lost almost every day...and expect the locals to show you [not just tell you] how to get to the right location. And don't worry about language. The locals will find someone to translate if you don't speak Spanish. I have rented many houses in many different countries. This is one ranks near the top. It offers the complete package of functionallity, cleanliness, atmosphere, location, and allows you to rub closely with the locals. I almost never go back to the same place....but the Casa Esmeralda might get a second visit.... Nothing better than a double dip in the local culture.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Casa Esmeralda was the perfect getaway - the property definitely exceeded our expectations! The ocean was wonderful - just a few steps away and with spectacular views up and down the coastline. Sunrise was a spectacular time every single day. You can snorkel not far from the shore - pretty and colorful fish to watch. We loved relaxing on the patio - the awning helped keep the sun out when we wanted to cool off a bit. We enjoyed eating out and cooking in - several really good local restaurants. We took several day trips - local beaches (loved the "wavy beach"), hiking in the rain forest at El Yunque, night kayaking at the Bioluminescent Bay up in Fajardo, Old San Juan (cool history, old forts, charming shops), and Pork Highway. Pork Highway is a must - it is a single road (Highway PR-184) which passes through the town of Guavate. The lechonaras there serve roasted pork and other treats - even if you are a vegetarian you have to go see this! It is a big family destination on weekends, especially Sunday. Lots of fun. And there is a fantastic Pina Colada stand and some neat gift shops right in the middle of all of it. San Juan is only 90 minutes away - lots to do there and the city was a nice getaway in the middle of our week. Avoid rush hour as the roads can be really busy. Everyone we met in the area was super friendly. This is the perfect vacation spot if you like to get away from the hustle and bustle that you tend to find at resorts - it is a beautiful and well-maintained house a little off the beaten path but not so far that you can't get to shopping or whatever you may need.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.

Casa Esmeralda was comfortable, had everything we needed and the views were spectacular! The morning sun rises were extremely worth getting up early for! We did have difficulties at first with getting hot water in the second bathroom, and it took a little while to locate the caretaker, but he did finally come over and get the hot water working for us. The beach was very rocky, and we were grateful we had water shoes with us. We waded in the water and looked at beautiful sea things. There was not much sand and no swimming area due to the reefs, but still enjoyed the water views. The street is very busy and you could hear traffic day and night.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

I loved my stay at casa esmeralda, the property far exceeded my expectations. The house was spacious, clean and we had a view of the ocean which looks beautiful at night. The property was a paradise within a Paradise. I spent 7 nights at the property and have to say I loved every minute of it. It is a relaxing, romantic and in a beautiful location. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains, landscaping, palm trees and it sits right on the beach. You have an outside patio, patio furniture, gas grill and hammock on the grounds. The near by restaurants over look this beautiful beach. I was hooked on their food. We also enjoyed many meals at a restaurant called Musafa, about 3 miles east of the property. The people are some of the friendliest people I have ever encountered. We were so impressed at how traffic would come to a stop and the driver would motion for us to cross the street. This happened over and over again. We just loved the spirit of the people. I have to admit it was a great place to just relax and enjoy life. I plan on returning again next year as the south east portion of the island is my favorite (Arroyo, Patilla and Guayama). I recommend casa esmeralda if you are looking for a beautiful house on the beach that is away from all those tourist traps.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

we had problems with ants and rodents and NO HOT WATER. we called the owner constantly and he assured us daily that the "caretaker" would be over to fix the problems. the "caretaker" finally came on our last night and wanted to do exterminating while we were still there. at one point the owner told us to go to a hotel to take hot showers !!!!!! we were totally disappointed.Owner response: About once a year, we get a guest that is not prepared to rent a private home or the day to day responsibilities that go along with it. In fact, our caretaker attempted to respond on three separate occasions but the guests were not available. When he was able to investigate the problems, he found candy and other food left about (what we would call bait) and the hot water did in fact work. Guests that stayed at the house the week prior and following both sent us very glowing reviews which is the norm.

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay at casa esmeralda. If one is looking for beauty and traquility, he will find it here. The house is fully equipted with towels, sheets, blankets, pots, pans, plates, air conditioning for warmer nights. There are two working TV's but who needs them. The view from the back patio is breathtaking. We found everything clean and tidy for our arrival. There were no problems getting into the house or leaving. Everything went as smoothly as possible. We highly recommend this property.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.
