Pot Rock Island, The Thimble Islands, Stony Creek, Connecticut!
Pot Rock Island is one of the 32 seasonally inhabited Thimble Islands, carved by the glacier then strung like pearls and cast onto Long Island Sound off the coast of Branford, CT. Find it just two miles south of I-95 Exit 56, 90 miles east of NYC, 11 miles east of New Haven in the quaint New England seaside village of Stony Creek.
The island, locally known as Treasure Island, provides half the shelter for the favorite yacht anchorage among the Thimbles. Pot Rock is a 10 acre, hour glass shaped island, 1.5 miles off the Stony Creek Town Dock. The island is subdivided and owned by five families that live in 6 private summer residences.
The home available for rent is on a 1.3 acre wooded parcel that includes nearly 360º of water views, beautiful pink granite outcroppings, a glacial pot hole, a tidal pool, and access to a small beach. There are rights of way across and around about half the island. The other half of the island is private.
Transportation to and from the town dock is provided by the launch, Charly More, operated by Capt. Mike Infantino. The Charly More runs on the hour during the season. The boat trip takes 15-20 minutes. Off-season trips my be easily arranged by appointment. One might check the sightseeing web site of Capt. Bob Milne. Search under Thimble Islands. This links to a wonderful informative story from Yankee Magazine. Parking is on the street in Stony Creek or on the dock, first come, first served.
The house, built in 1987, is post and beam construction with an open floor plan and a sunny southern exposure. It features three bedrooms, one with two sets of bunks, one with a full. The MBR
boasts a spacious king. Adjacent to the MBR in the upper level loft there is a single daybed. Linens are BYO and occupancy is limited to 10 family members. There two full baths and a H&C outdoor shower.
There is no shore power. Utilities consist of propane for cooking, lights and refrigeration, 12 volt solar lighting, telephone and city water. 120 volt electrical power is a Honda portable generator, available for limited use only. For boat tie up there is a shared floating dock, a short wooded pathway walk from the house.
Although The Thimbles may not be a resort hot spot, they just might be Connectcut’s best kept secret. They provide a beautiful and serene atmosphere, inviting you to enjoy all the pleasures life at the seashore has to offer.
