Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: Cottage with deep water dock and across the street from ocean
Our house is on a secluded private island, on a deep water sound with a sandy beach and a dock which can accommodate a 40’ boat. It is directly across the street from the ocean. The waters are very clean and clear so you can fish and clam right off the dock. We are ardent conservationists and have managed to preserve the natural vegetation around the house. There is a very nice maritime forest surrounding the house as well as sea oats and beach grasses. The birding around the house is fabulous and we have many fall visitors who come just to bird watch. Surf fishing is very good because of a slew that has been there for at least 30 years. A boat ramp on the island is nearby so please use the dock that is shared by the owner and friends. Renters are not allowed to bring jet skis on the island.
Paul and CoCo Foster built the Bay House in 1975 on Figure 8 Island near Wilmington, North Carolina. It is a small, rustic and cozy home that has been recognized for its outstanding design to resist hurricanes. The foundation poles go all the way to the roof and have kept the house from being damaged from the many hurricanes we have recently had. The house has 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. It also has a warm water outside shower that is the most popular bathing area in the summer. The bay is a perfect swimming hole for kids and the ocean beach access is directly across the street from the house. The kitchen is fully equipped including a microwave and a complete set of cookware. Note the porch raitlings are strong but do not conform to current building codes. Please look at the photos carefully to make sure they are acceptable.
The Bay house is bright and clean and very relaxed. This is not a luxury home, but a functional beach house. Sandy toes are not a problem! Smoking is permitted outside, but must be carefully controlled because of the high winds and fire hazards. We have had several houses burn down on the island because of cigarette butts left burning in the sand or porch.
Figure Eight Island, just north of Wilmington North Carolina, is a private island and gated community, assessable only by land owners and their guests. There are no public facilities on the island. It has the only privately owned bridge over the intracoastal waterway. We have clean and white sandy beaches with blue green ocean water with have multiple turtle hatchling every year on the island. The beach is not crowded since the public is not allowed on the island.
The Bay House is available in all seasons, including November through May in the winter, as a monthly rental for our snowbird friends. We encourage our Canadian friends to come and stay for a 3-4 month winter rental. Figure 8 Island is a secluded island frequented by celebrities and politicians.
Please note: We are members of Friends of Felines and we support a small colony of feral cats to help keep the beach mice at bay. They live in the maritime forest and are rarely seen. We tend to them very well and they are never allowed in the house.

Hey! We are Jim and Paula Bushardt. So glad that you are taking an interest in our beach houses! We love them very much and truly enjoy sharing them with our tenants. Paula's parents, Paul and CoCo Foster, built the houses and lived in the ocean front one until their passing. They were true beach lovers and it's quite evident in the design of the houses. They are both casual and easy to relax in. No need to impress anyone here - just enjoy getting your feet sandy and your hair a mess! We take good care of the homes and try to preserve the easy care flavor. Jim and I are both engineers and work full time. When we do get free time we love to surf, play on the beach or hang out in our boat. We use the houses when they aren't rented too! Gardening is also a passion of ours. We love living off the land and Jim has a passion for duck hunting. We call him the "hunter gatherer" because he oysters and clams a lot and brings home wild duck! We have a wonderful daughter who is out of the home. She is an author of two books and you are welcome to read about them on our website Sunridge Press. We hope you enjoyed getting to know us and will come spend some time at the beach on our beautiful island called Figure 8!

Great beach weekend...

My wife and I greatly enjoyed our stay at the Bay House. The owners were very accommodating throughout and we enjoyed being directly across the street from a boardwalk leading to a deserted beach. The house was rustic (though not too rustic - internet & a flatscreen) and charming. Because the owners have left the maritime vegetation grow up, the house feels very secluded and private. I didn't bring any fishing gear because this was a quick romantic getaway, but maybe I should have since we sat on the dock at sunset and watched as fish jumped all around. The dock also makes it a perfect spot for a pick-up/drop-off by a charter service. Between the privacy and ease of access to a great beach, we felt that it was a great value.
Owner response:Thanks! Glad ya'll had fun - fall is great at the beach!

So we found the Bay House by chance, and we are so glad we did it. We spend 5 nights in the amazing Cottage and it was superb. We have not had such a great time in a while. The rooms were perfect for our family of 5. The baby had his own room with the baby crib the house provided. Our girls shared the 2nd room, and with my wife we enjoyed the master in the 2nd floor. The ocean was perfect and to round up our vacation we even saw dolphin swimming literally 20 feet away from us. Thank you Paula and Jim for such great hospitality. We are already planning our 2nd visit hopefully no later than October. We highly recommend this Piece of Paradise to anyone interested in a relaxing time. Lucas, Emilia, Carmen, Marcia and Cristian

We, three generations of us, had a happy time at the Bay House. The house is comfortable, easygoing, and attractive, nestled among its native plants and trees, with the bay at its feet and the beautiful ocean beach only steps away. Its owners' warmth and hospitality made our stay all the more pleasant. Highly recommend.

We just got home from a great house on a beautiful private island! The Bay House is so quaint and cozy. It was a perfect place for our vacation. The sound was beautiful and we enjoyed much of our time on the dock and swimming area. We also loved the beautiful secluded beach only a walk across the street. The white sands and crystal clear water were amazing! Thanks for sharing your home with us!

The Bay House offers great views from the deck of this wonderful beach cottage. The house is clean and well-maintained. We loved having access to the dock for a boat or kayaks, which got us to the adjacent tidal marsh. Service from the owners was great - there were even fresh flowers in the house upon our arrival!
