My husband & I spent 3 weeks at the river house this past September. The location for us was perfect. My husband is a fisherman & enjoyed the opportunity to successfully fish for stripers just below the house. The enormous windows and deck, the gas BBQ, well-equipped kitchen were real pluses. My husband was especially impressed with the sharp kitchen knives. We enjoyed hiking the Morse Conservancy trail to Seawall Beach, eating clams at Percy's Store in Popham, lunch at North Creek Farm, shopping at the farmer's market in Bath & exploring the penninsula. Anthony & Lucretia at the Hidden Cottages bait & gift shop were very friendly and helpful. We found Abbie to be avaiiable & also very helpful during our stay. We would recommend this property to those who like fishing, seclusion, love nature & beautiful scenery. We plan to return again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Abbie - thank you so much for making your home available to us. We had a wonderful, relaxing 9 days at The River House. The views are breathtaking and amazing, watching the tides come in and out. I ventured out to try clamming, didn't get any but had a great time walking the tidal basin. We watched a young eagle, a trio of wild turkey, a chipmunk, a pair of loons and a deer all from the window views. We spent several hours at Maine Maritime Museum in Bath (a must see if you are in the area). Spent a day in Boothbay and went to the Botanical Gardens, gorgeous in their fall colors. Day trips were easy to do and then home to River House to watch the tides. Couldn't have been better. And did I mention lobster, lobster, steamers and lobster? The house is exactly as shown in your photos and we could not have been happier. The wood heater took the chill out of the cool September nights. It was a perfect vacation. Thank you.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

River House provides an extraordinarily beautiful, natural setting with pristine views and a lovely house. It is tastefully and functionally decorated, and very well supplied with everything you will need for a terrific stay. We enjoyed clamming, walking on the beach and most of all enjoying fabulous views from the deck which spans 3 sides of the house. We are looking forward to our next visit.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

Beautiful cabin with deck you live on ... inside all windows show spectacular views. the high tide comes to your deck, low tide leaves miles of mostly empty beaches. clean, spacious inside to cook clams from the beach, lobsters, and other maine products from the local area. Very private ... at night the only light is a light house on an island on the ocean. All is available from the deck steps. Thank you for making this available to us, Abbie!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

Our family spent a restful July week at River House. We wish we could transport this charming house to all our vacation destinations. The property was clean and cozy, but really it's all about the windows and the amazing views. Our family has been to many beaches around the world; this one rates way up there for privacy and the lovely fine sand. Amazingly nobody seemed to mind that the water was on the cool side. We didn't go in much past knee height. Overall we had a wonderful time. Thank you, Abbie.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We had a memorable time in this breath taking setting- where the river and marsh meets the sea! Pictures can not capture the beauty- much like a camera can not capture the true vastness of the blue sky when pointed straight up...it merely looks blue. The home is light and open-it truly feels as if you are outside vs. being in a cottage. So how do you describe a 3 dimensional experience? We were treated to full moon complete with blue heron fishing right in front of the deck. It was like the Wonder of Camping with the Comforts of Home. And the place is clean- my own mother type of clean- with all of the special touches of a home because the owner shares so many treasures! It is a rare find in a rental. I hope everyone enjoys and respects the place so we can return one day for a longer stay! (Special note- if you are a bird watcher this is your dream home. Visiting hummingbirds etc. daily)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

A truly unique setting - unbelievably private and peaceful. No one around but the seagulls, herons and fish hawks. If your idea of a good vacation is a deck with beautiful views, strolling on beautiful beaches, canoeing/kayaking and just enjoying the sounds and smells of the ocean, this is a wonderful spot. Highly recommend!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children.

Abbie -- What a beautiful home. Scott and I greatly enjoyed the silence and the beauty of the beach, water and night sky. We enjoyed a bright sunny first day, and then the fog and thunderstorms! It was more perfect than we imagined. Thank you for sharing your home with us. I can't express how much we like being out and away from everything. The beach walks and other hikes were lovely -- thanks for the tide tips. We hope to come again. Cordially, Courtney and ScottDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: My ancestors bought coastal property in Phippsburg in the late 1800's. In the mid-1970's my grandmother built this deck house at the water's edge below the larger family compound. I am now the steward of the deck house (River House). I am a photographer and teach photo at a private high school in Yarmouth, Me. My husband and I live in Freeport, Maine.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Privacy, the sound and smell of the ocean, the natural light, time to slow down and read, photograph and find new perspectives. All my attention faces the water when I'm at River House, my activities are governed by the tides. When the tide comes in I kayak up the tributaries of the river in front of the house; or cross the river to the big beach for a long beach walk; or swim in front of the house in the deep part of the river, going against the current for good exercise. When the tide is low I dig for clams or cross the river on foot for a swim in the ocean. At the end of the day, we like to sit on the deck over cocktails, as we watch the changing light wash the Seguin Island lighthouse in a warm hue of orange, pink and gold. In my opinion, this is the best Maine has to offer.
