Sunset Roost was a real find. The property is perfectly maintained and spotlessly clean. It is very obvious that the owners take great pride in it. We have rented a lot of homes on VRBO and I can honestly say that we have never rented a home where every little detail was taken care of like it was at Sunset Roost...All the way from perfectly marked closets to help renters know where things were, detailed instructions on everything, hand-made soap as a gift to renters, the ample supply of linens, perfectly stocked kitchen with everything you could possibly want and then some. The owners are super kind, extremely accessible and always available for questions/ help. The photographs do NOT do the home justice. The home is well beyond anything the photos show. It is truly a slice of paradise- tranquil and perfect to restore frazzled city nerves. The deck is picture perfect as are the sunsets. For those previous reviewers who complain about doing laundry - I disagree. The home has a giant washer and dryer and all the owners ask is that we leave no more than two loads for housekeeping. Certainly not unreasonable! The housekeeping staff would be there all day long if they did laundry for the almost 8 people that the home can comfortable sleep. I cannot recommend this home enough! thanks for a wonderful stay and for all your graciousness and courtesy.

We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay at Sunset Roost! The secluded wooded setting, the well groomed grounds, the cleanliness and organization of the house, the comfortable furnishings and bedding, the lovely artwork, the FABULOUS deck and hot tub, the gorgeous scenic views, the spectacular sunsets, the good internet/TV/stereo quality, the variety of books and games, the hospitality and helpfulness of the owners, the many touches small and large, it was everything we had hoped for, and more! We just loved it there, and would not hesitate to stay there again, or to recommend it to others---it exceeded my expectations on every level, and I am so thankful that we chose to stay there during our vacation to Yosemite National Park. The only sadness I experienced was the day we had to leave...it brought tears to my eyes to think that I might never see it again. I can only hope that our future travels bring us back to this lovely jewel, and I thank you so much, Tracy and David, for sharing your little piece of heaven with us!

The house is fully equipped with all the kitchen dishes and utensils you might need, a lot of pillows everywhere, dozens of books and games for the kids and adults. The indoor was designed beautifully, with one big master bed and two smaller bedrooms. For families with young kids, there is one pack-and-play and hiking carrier in the house. Very relaxing outdoor space with a nice deck, hot tub, swing, and several seating areas under shaded trees. We saw some wild turkeys wondering outside the house, but no bears (luckily?)… The house is about 2 miles off of rt 140 on the way to Yosmite valley. The only down side was the need to do laundry before check-out, which made us feel like we’re doing chores on our vacation. Will definitely recommend this house to friends.

We went to the Sunset Roost during the February long weekend in 2011 (18th to 21st). There were 6 of us (3 couples). The place is perfect for a group of 6. Our thoughts on the place: - Well-equipped kitchen. It had all appliances and utensils. We liked the fact that the cooking range had a gas stove. Besides a big dining table, there was a breakfast counter with bar stools. It was a perfect setting for a group of people, some can cook and others can sit around and enjoy. - All 3 bedrooms were nice and cozy. They had enough wardrobe space. The bedding was adequate. - Both the bathrooms were neat and clean, and had enough clean towels. - Nice living area, with comfortable leather couches - The convertible bed in the corner of the living room was perfect for gathering during the day and evening with friends. - The place was stocked with lots of indoor games (pictionary, snakes and ladders, taboo, etc). - Some good books in the library (for those who care) - Good enough internet speed (wireless). - Excellent patio with a great view of nature in front of it. The area around the patio had a nice hammock and a swing. There was a trail starting from right in front of the patio (we could not explore it due to Yosemite's winter conditions and lack of time) The best thing about the location was that the house was secluded and serene, perfect for a quiet getaway.

Stayed for 4 nights in September. What a perfect find, spotlessly clean and well appointed. Great location in itself, as well as for Yosemite NP. A lovely, tranquil retreat in the evening, relaxing with a glass of wine in the hot tub, and a great place to wake up in the morning. The owners have thought about everything and it is truly home from home. It was lovely to meet Tracy and chat with her when we arrived. All in all, one of the highlights of our trip to the USA.

This was one of the best maintained vacation rentals that we have ever stayed in. The special touches around the house were wonderful. Both David and Tracy were very helpful before and during our stay with answering any questions that we had. The hot tub was great after a day of hiking in Yosemite. We would definately stay again. If peace and quiet is what you enjoy, this is the place for you!

We stayed at sunset roost for 4 days in Aug 09. The place is exactly as described and the photos are good. The owners have spared nothing when it comes to attention to detail. You will find handmade soap in the bathrooms and adequate supplies of bath and beach towels. The location is outside Yosemite (approx 20 miles I think). However, once we'd got used to where we were, this presented no problems - although of course - a car is essential! The hot tub, the hammock the wonderful sunsets, all added to the perfect experience! The owners Tracy and David were always available by phone if you needed them and they also work close by. We were particularly impressed with the itineary that they helped us with for the duration of our stay. Having someone who knows the area and where to go - was fantastic. We did 99% of what they suggested and experienced the most memorable sites. We were able to cook some wonderful meals at the Roost. The kitchen has everything you could ever need - and more! It was trurly home from home. The property is well maintained and was spakly clean when we arrived. We would definately recoomend this 'find' to everyone. You won't be disappointed! We will be returning one day for sure!

We stayed there last May. The owner was very noisy and wanted to do work around the property when we were there. One time my daughter was in the shower, and he called and wanted to do work inside. I said no. Also, I did not enjoy having to do the laundry for them before we left. We had to wash the towels and linens before leaving. The road going up to the place is rough, and full of potholes. Totally not worth it. We will not be returning.
Owner response:As owners of Sunset Roost, we strive to create and provide a comfortable home, which is well maintained and clean. It is our hope, our guests feel energized and refreshed after their stay. David and I are disappointed to learn, 18 months after their visit to the Roost, this was not the experience of Sandy & Ron and their family. Unfortunately, their VRBO review is contrary to the complimentary note left in our guest book. “We had a wonderful time…thank you for sharing your hospitality.” We wish we had known of Sandy’s concerns at the time of their stay, so we could address those concerns in the moment. Especially, since we want our guests at Sunset Roost to have a vacation that is fun, relaxing and memorable in a positive way! Tracy and David

Dear Tracy & David: Thank you so very much for your "roost" where we hung our hats while visiting Yosemite. Your home is absolutely beautiful and so very very comfortable. We were lucky enough to see deer in the trees below your deck and a few wild turkeys scurried across your lawn. The quiet was perfect for sleeping and the sunsets breathtaking. We had a very relaxing time. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. Lynne & Bob P.S. Your artwork is fantastic!

Dear Tracy & David,I was searching for a perfect line to write, but even though I’m a man of many words, they seemed to slip away whenever I tried to put them down into writing; using one of my favorite authors (that sits on your vacation-home book-shelve) I decided to go with this one – “You are never given a dream without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however.” (Richard Bach, Illusions, 1977)We (my wife, son & me) arrived to California about 7 months ago from a small country in the Middle East called Israel. Ever since we got here we were utterly taken by the beauty of this country and its people. When we set our minds to visit Yosemite with my parents we got your details from friends of yours with good recommendations (already a good sign…) but there was no way to prepare us for the breathtaking beauty of Sunset-Roost.We already spoke about it with many of our friends and family referring to it as a ‘home’ since this is how it made us feel. The personal touch in everything, from the beautiful garden (with the perfect deck & hammock), through the entire homely experience (books, hand-made pottery & soaps etc.) it was…did I use ‘amazing’ yet?At the first day, I took a photo of our 3 year old son (Yuval) sitting on the back deck watching the majestic sunset over the peaceful mountain view, as a designer I can manipulate images to perfection but in this case, it was simply working with the perfect ‘ingredients’.Thank you & keep well,Zehava & Eli (the grandparents)Tal, Udi & Yuval (the Waizers)

We enjoyed a spectacular 4 day weekend at the Sunset Roost in early March. The house is simple but nicely appointed and cozy. The living, dining, and kitchen areas all flow together to allow for sociable evenings while dinner is being prepared and enjoyed. The most spectacular features of the house are its setting and the large redwood porch (complete with hot-tub) that overlooks the Sierra foothills. The house is set on 10+ acres, and the deck is situated so that you cannot see a house or a road from it.Midpines is a small town—there is, however, a very nice general store along Highway 140—so you will need to go to Mariposa if you are looking for a grocery store or a restaurant. Nonetheless, we found Midpines to be a perfect location for seclusion and solitude after days spent in Yosemite and the Merced River Canyon. The Sunset Roost is a perfect home base for explorations of both or for a quiet, beautiful weekend in the serenity of the Sierra foothills.
