The Pont Saint Michel Apartment
Paris 4th Arrondissement

Location:
A large (145 square meters), light and elegant three double bedroom, three bathroom apartment overlooking the River Seine by the Pont St Michel and only a few yards from Notre Dame and the Sainte Chapelle. This really is the centre of Paris.

The apartment is located on the whole of the 2nd (3rdUS) floor of a grand and historic building on the Ile de la Cite on the bank of the Seine with a view from its windows and large balcony across the river to the Place St Michel in the heart of the Latin Quarter

This is the island where in ancient times the first settlement of the Paresii tribe was established. The birthplace of Paris!

Being in the centre of Paris most of the main historic and cultural sites and monuments are close by. Nearest is Notre Dame Cathedral a few yards away, with the Sainte Chapelle, Palais de Justice and the Conciergerie just around the corner. A short walk away is the Louvre, the theatres at Chatelet and just over the bridge outside the door is the vibrant Left Bank area.

Transport is close by with the main Metro and rapid transit system, RER underground stations only a block away.

Access to the apartment is by secure coded entry to the internal courtyard. The ancient hallway gives access to a brand new elevator and a separate stairway.

The Apartment:
Occupying the whole of the second floor of the building, the apartment has four tall double glazed French window doors which open at the front of the building onto a full width balcony. The view is to the South directly over the river and the St Michel bridge. Below, the street is not a main through road so carries little traffic. The river has barges and tourist boats passing by most of the year.

Entry to the apartment is through a security locked door to a large hallway leading to the living room, dining room and the corridor to the kitchen and third bathroom area.

The large and impressive living room (or salon) has very high ceilings and two of the double French window doors. There is an original marble fireplace and over mantle mirror and the furnishing is classic and comfortable. The two largest bedrooms are reached through double doors from the living room.

Bedroom one is very light and elegant, also with a tall double French door to the balcony at the front of the building. There is a very comfortable queen size bed with a deep but firm mattress. All bed linens and towels are of the best quality. It has its own modern en suite bathroom with shower, w.c. and basin. All tiles are a feature of this wonderful apartment and are hand painted.

Bedroom two is on the other side of the living room also with a tall double French door to the balcony to the front of the building. It has a comfortable queen size bed or if required, twin single beds. There is a modern en suite bathroom with shower, w.c. and basin.

Bedroom three is at the rear of the apartment with a tall double window and has a single trundle bed which can be converted to either two singles or to a joined double bed.

The large Dining room also has high ornamental ceiling and a large window. There is a large table which can seat up to eight persons.

There is a fully equipped kitchen with four gas burner cooker hob and oven, fridge freezer, double sink and dishwasher. All cooking utensils and other small appliances are top quality and all cutlery and crockery as well as glassware is supplied.

Bathroom three has a full size bath with shower over, bidet and wash basin. A hairdryer is supplied and there is a mirrored cabinet with power outlet. There is a bathroom radio. There is also a washer and separate dryer. All instructions are in English.

The apartment is equipped with LCD flat screen television, cable TV service with 150 channels including CNN and BBC and Internet high speed broadband WiFi and Ethernet connection. There is also DVD and hi-fi equipment together with MP3 connectivity.

We are two couples, one in our late sixties , the other just into their seventies, who shared and thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Pont St. Michel Apartment on the Ile de la Cite. We were very pleased with being able to enjoy the Place St Michel and sun-filled Seine views from the French balcony windows fronting the entire apartment. The area on the two Iles and the south of the river were very comfortable for us. They were excellent walking areas and were literally footsteps away from Notre Dame and its organs and music programs. Having the taxi stand across the bridge made local transportation easily available. For the visitor more adventurous, the Metro stops around the corner from the apartment. The Iles were very-well patrolled and made it comfortable and safe for us to wander about well into the evening - darkness in mid-May is near ten p.m.. Our initial contact for this property was through Ken Varcoe almost a year ago. He promised us a comfortable accommodation, with English language instructions that would be understandable for each of the apartment appliances. And that is what we found. Everything worked. Every appliance came with detailed and sequential instructions. There were no surprises Each of the people with whom we had communication with were pleasant to deal with, very knowledgeable and courteous. They easily accommodated our request for transport to and from CDG. We would do this trip again in an instance. The City was magnificent. And this Pont St Michel apartment is a wonderful space to call a temporary home during a visit to Paris.

We just returned from a week in Paris staying at this centrally located large apartment. We appreciated the elevator and the proximity to the metro and taxi stand. We loved strolling around the Isle de la Cite and the Isle de St. Louis, particularly at sunset. The kitchen was well stocked. Plenty of towels and comforters. The bathrooms were clean and although the showers were fine for us, they may be small for the men or larger women in your group. Since we were there in late April/early May, we did not need to open the windows at night so the noise did not bother us. Our only mishap was when we arrived after a very long flight and contrary to what we were told, even as late as when we called from the airport as instructed, the prior tenants were there and not checking out for awhile. Since we were exhausted that put a damper on day 1 while we wandered the streets waiting for it to be cleaned and ready for us. The rest of the week went smoothly and we would highly recommend this apartment.

Owner response: Thank you for taking the time to leave us an excellent review. We were surprised to discover that the prior guests violated their contractual check-out time, even though they had been reminded of it at check-in. They acted in bad faith and refused to leave the apartment, knowing that they were staying beyond their welcome and that you were arriving. Once they they did leave, extra housekeeping staff arrived to expedite the cleaning and setup to prepare the apartment for your stay. This is the first time such an incident has occurred for us, and we regret that it put a damper on the start of your visit. Thank you for your generous remarks about the apartment, and we're pleased to know that the rest of your visit was pleasant.

We chose this centrally located apartment to celebrate an 80th birthday and loved it. The view of the Seine with the Eiffel tower in the distance was wonderful. A lift made it very easy for an older relative and it was nicely roomy for a party of 5. It was a very short walk, essentially around the block, to stand in the plaza before the Notre Dame cathedral. It was also a very easy stroll over to the restaurants of Ile de la Cite as well as over to the right or left bank. The tobacco shop around the corner sold packets of tickets for the metro which was very easy to navigate. Having said that, there were so many things nearby that we used the metro rarely. The owner was very helpful and responsive and the local management was also very helpful with explaining the use of appliances that differ from those common in the US. The apartment was also surprisingly quiet to be in the heart of the city. Terrific location!

We were a party of 4 adults and thoroughly enjoyed out stay in Pont Saint Michael. The location of the apartment is great, very close to metro and bus stations, but the close vicinity to Place St. Michael makes it a bit noisy at night. The apartment is appointed as described. For our next stay we would request a blender. We did have problems with internet, but the matter was rapidly taken care of by Ken. I will definitely go back and recommend it highly.

This apartment is ideally situated for anything one would need in Paris. The metro stop is a few steps away, and there are several restaurants nearby. The view of the Seine from the windows is divine. This is the second time I've stayed at this apartment. We are five women. The apartment is spotless. The beds are very comfortable, and the linens are top notch. The kitchen is lovely and is equipped with everything one might need. There was even a bottle of wine, orange juice and milk waiting for us. The living room is lovely with the ornate ceiling, the antique mirror and the fireplace.

The apartment was pretty much as described in the VRBO site. No internet was available for half our week long stay and most of the business week. A floor plan would be useful for all VRBO offerings. The security of the neighborhood was excellent. There was no noise from our neighbors , but there was quite a bit of noise from the major arterial on Pont St. Michel and from Place St. Michel. I had to use ear plugs every night. My husband did not. The apartment was very clean with a couple of exceptions. The living room area rug was very stained. The dining room and kitchen table cloths were stained and dirty. The wood floors were nice if slippery because the rugs lacked non slip pads. This was a serious danger for all of us and for any other guest. We repositioned some furniture to improve our safety and completely removed the small rugs. Two occasional chairs were broken and one was badly stained. The living room and dining room were huge and spaciousnes. The plaster ceilings were beautiful, the French doors to the balcony were charming and the view of the Seine to the left bank was lovely. When on the balcony one could see the top of the Eifel tower and the towers of Notre Dame. The third bedroom was barely adequate for our single guest. There was no place to hang clothes other than a hall tree that would have been useful in the entry hall. The bathroom and toilet were far from that bedroom. The other two bedrooms/bathrooms were small compared to the other spaces. There were no lightweight blankets- only duvets which we find too warm. The management company was very good. All of its personnel were courteous and efficient and as helpful as they could be under the circumstances. The use of pay pal or other web based payment would save a lot of time (having to go to a bank and make two wire transfers) and money. The lack of internet connection for half of the time we were there was a serious problem for us and interfered with many aspects of our stay. When it was on it was slow. No one wanted to trudge out to a café at night to use wifi. We thought those days were long gone. We were amazed at the total lack of service for such a long period of time. We’ve never experienced such a long outage and poor service here or anywhere else in the world where they have an internet connection. Would re recommend the apartment: yes, if the above referenced problems were corrected. Its size and location were great as were other qualities mentioned above.

Owner response: This review is fair in most respects and we are pleased that the reviewer has recommended the apartment and decided that they found the size and location great as well as commenting favourably on its spacious style and its beautiful plaster ceilings and the French doors to the balconies with the view of the Seine to the left bank which they rightly describe as lovely. The situation with the delay in re-establishing the failed internet connection was upsetting for the reviewer and we too were very disappointed that the broadband supplier took so long to rectify this despite our constant complaints to them. Unfortunately, France telecom service is nonexistent on Sundays and marginal on the rest of the week. We recertified the Internet line and upgraded/replaced the hardware in the apartment so this problem has been resolved. This reviewer commented that the noise from the traffic crossing the Pont St Michel can feel intrusive. Paris is a very busy city and few places are without some traffic noise. They did have the windows open though and other clients have not commented about having a problem in this regard. The rugs have now have new non-slip under mats to respond to the concerns raised. Regrettably, the prior clients damaged two of the occasional chairs (out of a total of more than a dozen) and these have been removed. The reviewer found the apartment very clean generally with few concerns but including one regarding the cleanliness of the main carpet. This is a unique antique handmade carpet that is over 200 years old and is made from raw wool which contains a wide collection of natural fibers that show through in some darker spots. This can give the appearance that it is less than clean but in fact is part of the antique nature of the carpet. The carpet is cleaned regularly and the unique appearance cannot be altered without damaging the original. This apartment is one of the very few remaining “unspoilt” apartments in Paris which means that it has a lot of genuine charm and some quirks that go with that. We would like to thank the reviewer for their frank and useful appraisal, their kind words about our personnel, and for their positive recommendation to other renters. We are especially encouraged that the reviewer would recommend the apartment if the referenced problems were corrected… and they have!

The location is outstanding - nestled on the block between Notre Dame and St Chapelle. The living room and two bedrooms have large windows that open onto the Seine. Near all the action, convenient to the Metro and RER, yet quiet at night. (The building is also very quiet.) It was a short stroll along the river to "local" Paris. The rooms are all well appointed, the furniture is comfortable. Ample electrical outlets and plentiful water (including hot - we had seven in the apartment and never ran out). The little inclusions were very welcome - hair dryer, cart for groceries, internet connection. Our party was two adults, 4 just graduated 18 year olds and a 13 year old. There was room for all, places for everyone to hang out and spots to nap or be alone. The owners were terrific to deal with. Very attentive, flexible when we had a couple last minute travel snags and quite professional in the financial dealings. This was our first apartment holiday rental - we loved it.
