Romantic Luxury in a Historical Home in the Heart of Ancient Athena.

The Athens Heritage House was designed to offer guests a true home away from home, familiar and comfortable with the same amenities they have at home.

Located on the first floor of a Neo-classical three story building that has undergone a complete gut renovation and partial rebuild. It is absolutely beautiful.

There are a total of three bedrooms and two full baths and one half bath. This historical home has 2 bedrooms off the living room, both with custom made iron beds - one bedroom has a Queen and the other two twins. The bedrooms look out onto the side street lined with orange trees. A third bedroom with en suite full bath is located in the garden studio off of the courtyard.

The street connects into the pedestrian zone that meanders its way into Plaka, Monasteraki, around the Acropolis and up Phillopapou Hill. It is an amazing location! One block over is another pedestrian zone, lined with cafes and restaurants, and around the corner a set of stairs leads you to yet another path. Whether you are a jogger, hiker or just love to walk, this is the place to be for exploring the sites and sounds of the Plaka, Monasteraki and Thisseo.

The kitchen and living room are designed with an open floor plan, which is terrific because it opens on to the house's courtyard, which is secluded from the street and surrounded on all sides by the building. It is full of plants and is a lovely place to enjoy a cup of coffee as you plan your day's activities.

The kitchen has a cooktop, microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator, along with plenty of dishes and cookware. There is also a full-size washer and dryer (yes, a clothes dryer - why spend your holiday waiting for your clothes to dry!).

The kitchen and living room open up onto the private courtyard garden, where the cozy garden studio is located. This third bedroom with en suite bath and kitchenette is the perfect escape for harried parents of teens at the end of the day!

The apartment also has high speed internet and free unlimited international long distance phone service to the US, Canada, Australia, China and several EU countries!

Athens Heritage House - Luxury Historical Center 3BR/2.5BA

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Athens

I traveled my home country extensively with my family as a child, and was fortunate to have parents who encouraged us to study a second language young. While my language of choice as a child was French, my culture of choice was Greek - My earliest jobs were always in Chicago's Greek diners, my university days filled with hours playing backgammon in the cafeteria with my Greek friends, and my Eurail passes always started and ended my European backpacking holidays in Greece. So no one was surprised when I met Basil, a romantic writer but practicing translator and linguist, born and bred in Athens, but transplanted to Chicago, fell in love, and married him.
While our life in Chicago was full, rehabbing a warehouse we purchased to house ourselves, our son and our growing Greek translation agency, I longed to plant some roots for our family in Basil's hometown. A small studio overlooking Mount Lykavittos was to be our Athens crash pad, but thanks to what seemed then an unfortunate turn of events, our home in Athens ended up being larger than we had planned, offering it as a short term furnished rental seemed the logical way to afford it. Little did we realize that it would become so popular we'd be sleeping on friend's couches rather than in our own Athens home!
Tired of being homeless in Athens, we purchased a second place directly adjacent to our Athens First. In 2006 we completed the renovations of three additional short term furnished rentals. As I said early on, this is the greatest accidental business one could imagine, and I love sharing my adopted city with visitors. Our guests repeatedly thank us for the little extras that often mean so much when you are planning what is often a once in a lifetime trip.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment

As an ex-pat in Athens, I know the wonderful off the beaten path places that can make a holiday special, and I also know how to stay on the tourist path without feeling like you are being herded along with the crowds. Feel free to email me with your questions as you plan your trip to Athens - just one of the little extras guests of Greek Vacation Rentals will find when they share our homes in Athens.

Owner's Map of Athens

Wow, who would have thought when I told my husband I wanted to buy a little pied-a-terre in his hometown, Athens, Greece, that I'd end up with the greatest accidental career of my life?
Born and raised in Chicago, my love for travel was evident early on. Perhaps it was my arrival in the world, early one December morning, way quicker than my siblings had, in fact so quick we were still enroute to the hospital, and I still hold the title of youngest patient ever admitted to that north suburban hospital! (And thus, as a Sagittarius, characteristically smitten with wunderlust).

    • We enjoyed our stay in the Athens First Apartment from 8/22-8/27 2009. We were a family of 6, including four kids. We found everything we needed in this lovely, well furnished, and very clean and comfortable apartment. We loved breakfast on the verandah, access to high speed internet, and easy access to everything we needed. It was easy to get to the historic center--- except that everyone was so comfortable they wanted to rest longer in the apartment! Thank you, Carole and Basil, for providing such a wonderful place to stay! I have already recommended this to friends and relatives.

    • Athens Heritage House suited our family of four, including two teenagers, perfectly (and could comfortably have accomadated another two people). It's been finished and furnished beautifully, so feels much more like a home than rental property. I loved the clawfoot tub and the hardwood floors, while the teens were delighted to find WIFI and and iHome! The location in Thisseus about a block and a half from the Metro and pedestrian walkway (and cafe area) is fabulous. The travel and neighborhood tips provided are much better than a guidebook! Best deal around.

    • We had a great time at Heritage House. It was such a great location that we did not have to take a cab anywhere except to get to the port at the end of our trip. We were traveling with 3 teenage girls and were concerned about staying somewhere we felt comfortable about them exploring on their own. Well, no worries here. It was perfect. Yianni our cab driver was awesome, as was the owner upstairs. Carole was also a pleasure leading up to our trip. Thank you so much, we would definitely recommend Heritage House to a friend, and would love to stay there again. It made our stay in Athens relaxing and comfortable.

    • Comment Rating: positive Comment Text: Marvellous location in a quiet street but just a few hundred yards from all the ancient sites and the wonderful new Acropolis museum. Staying here made our experience of Athens wonderful. Do watch out on the metro though, I had my wallet stolen going just one stop.

    • July 17-22nd 2009, What a magnificient apartment! We were so surprised with the quality of everything in the apartment - couldn't have asked for anything more! And the location was amazing, we walked for miles every day every direction, the city definetely comes alive at night and we loved the atmosphere of all the bars and restaurants. We have already told many of our friends of our wonderful experience and have highly recommended staying at the Heritage House.

    • We had the best time staying in Carole & Basil's "Acropolis View - Beta" and "Athens First" apartments during our recent trip to Greece! This was our first time traveling to Europe w/ our four children (14, 12, 9 & 7) and father-in-law (who was born in Greece, but hadn't returned in 63 years). The apartments were perfect in every way --spacious, nicely furnished, & updated w/ all the creature comforts necessary for a "home away from home." The location was ideal, too. We felt like tourists by day and locals by night b/c we visited attractions during the day and then had a relaxing dinner at a local taverna near the apartments. Carole's welcome package and recommendations were extremely helpful, and really made our trip so much more relaxing for us. We would highly recommend any of Carole's Athens apartments, and plan to contact her the next time we visit Greece (which our children hope is every year!). Thank you so much, Carole -- You're the BEST!!

    • We stayed in the Alpha apartment from 7/31/2009 - 8/3/2008 and there were 6 adults and one 12 year old. We used the three bedrooms and sofabed and it worked out perfectly. The apartment is modern, the kitchen was great and having laundry available (we just finished a 12 night cruise) was a huge bonus. We found that being a little off of the main tourist area the prices for food were very inexpensive. The taxi stand was convenient and we ended up buying all we needed at the german drug/grocery store at the mall. There is a greek food shop directly across the street from the apartment and around the corner. Great selection, superb prices; we really stocked up on gifts there and were surprised about their low prices since it looks like an expensive shop. We also bought refrigerated greek appetizers and baked them at home. Highly recommend this in lieu of a hotel.
