Mesilla is a historic pueblo where the Gadsen Purchase was signed and many historic events have transpired. Population of 2500, traditionally Mexican-American, and rich with cultural history, adobe architecture and events on the Plaza which is 2 blocks north, shopping, and several family owned restaurants and clubs.

Las Cruces adjoins Mesilla and has most of the cultural amenities you would expect of a community of 95,000. This site is ideal for walking, and bicycle riding; long rides through the Mesilla Valley are easy to find. The river, Rio Grande runs through the town and there is a network of irrigation ditches throughout the town that service the fields of pecan groves, and chiles. Winters are mild, and we have 325 days of sun a year.
The house is simple and easy to enjoy.Summer rates are now in place until September! Home is very comfortable in scale, 1200 sq ' of living space plus the enclosed garden.

The garden is right outside the back door and is private, and intimate, well designed and inspiring. The home style is 'old mexican' and has faux finished floors and walls which are 3 ft. thick adobe. There is a handcarved king sleigh bed in the master bedroom and comfortable furnishings as well as hand made copper sinks and efficient stacked washer and dryer.

Although you have all of the comforts of a boutique hotel suite, the simplicity of its amenities is appealing to a certain simplified aesthetic. The owner does not want it to lose its historic feeling by overly modernizing it, and the home is on the historical register. Owner is an artist and walls are full of original artwork from her collection. Easel and art supplies are available upon request.
Maximum stay is 15 days.

There is parking in back for 2 vehicles and/or RV.

Why the Owner Chose Las Cruces

This home was originally going to be my studio, where I would make art and greet visitors. As it turns out, after going through the process of restoring it from a ruinous rent house to a gorgeous historic home, I couldn't bear to paint or make creative messes in it any longer and so I was able to offer it to others to enjoy while I found a less precious dwelling nearby to put into home and studio.

The Unique Benefits at this House

The most appealing thing about this property is the tone of relaxation and comfort that it offers. All of the details for a pleasing stay are considered, and the owner will do her best to meet your special requests. Be prepared to let go of your cares and still stay in touch with the world you left behind (that is, if you choose to!)

A
River side path on the Rio Grande

go west on Calle del Norte past Snow Road and take a dirt road to the right, park and enjoy the paths along the river...goes for miles.

B
the Bean Coffee Shop

great ambiance, lots of good people stop and enjoy the baked goods and fresh ground coffee drinks. At the light of Calle del Norte and Hwy 28, aka Avenida de Mesilla.

C
the historic Plaza

many good things happen on the Plaza including live music, crafts vendors on Friday and Sunday, and our minor Basilica San Albino, the only other Basilica is in Santa Fe.

D
the Fountain Theater

the only still functioning theater of historic adobe in the US. Lots of great independent films, start at 7:30 each night and a matinee on Saturdays is always a film made in New Mexico.

E
the Mountain View Coop

a small grocery of organic foods and fresh produce.

F
the Preston Contemporary Gallery

this area is called the Mercado de Mesilla and has several good shops and restaurants including the Preston Contemporary Gallery which is the most forward and fresh of all the galleries in the region.

Owner's Map of Las Cruces

Artist/Designer with wonderful historic property and her own home near-by. I love to restore and design functional and artistic spaces to live in and enjoy. The home is actually larger than the photos allow, and has a definite wow! factor for those who appreciate historic environments.

This is a special place for special people: those who appreciate the charm of a place that is redolent of time and history, who like a very relaxed atmosphere that has enough modern comforts but not all the ones that they may be used to at home. It's the kind of place where you wake up in the morning and sit out in the garden with a fresh cup of coffee and read, listen to the water flow in the fountain, and/or just contemplate. My favorite spot is the built-in sectional in the living room, which is also the coolest spot in the summer, where I can curl up with a good book and forget the world. The dining room is also very cozy and wonderful for informal dining. The location is also very convenient to just about every place we would want to go. Good restaurants nearby, and some within short walking distance. The owner is charming, interesting, and very accommodating. We are definitely coming back here.

Owner response:It's such a pleasure to find my guests feel comfortable and welcome!

Wow!

When my brother and I walked into this beautiful adobe we both said WOW! It was everything and more than expected. The owner's art work hangs throughout the house so bring your checkbook because you will have to have one or more of her works. The owner, the house and the people of the area will make you feel like you have always lived here. There is a reason New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment and this home is the essence of that enchantment, The property is only 1 block from the Plaza of Mesilla so the walk is easy. There are many excellent restaurants in the area, one of which we really enjoyed was the St. Claire Winery. The menu was extensive and delicious. The Bean does a great breakfast. If you are here on Sunday go to the Double Eagle for their buffet. It's worth the trip just to see the big shell serving bowls. (Can you tell I don't get out much?) Do not miss the shops around the plaza. Every shop keeper will make you feel welcome. And last, but not least, a trip to this part of the world will be one of the least expensive vacations but one of the richest experiences you will have. Just let the rest of the world go away and sit in the stillness and be at peace.

Owner response:I think we call this a happy guest experience! These were great people and I'm pleased to say that all of our guests have found their own unique and meaningful experience by being here. Thank you dear Guests, please come again. Ouida

We recently spent a week in October at this home in Mesilla. It was our second visit having been there in October, 2008. We have thoroughly enjoyed out vacations there and it was great "coming home" to Mesilla after a day of sightseeing. The home and patio are comfortable and cozy and 2 blocks up the street is the historic Mesilla Plaza. This year on the Plaza we enjoyed a 2 hour Mariachi concert and in 2008 we attended a political rally there for VP nominee, Joe Biden. During both stays the owner, Ouida, invited us to her art studio for a tour of her current projects. Also, this year the Mesilla Valley Bosque has opened and is a short 5 minute drive from the home. We spent an early Saturday morning bird watching on the Rio Grande. Our week in this Mesilla home went by all too quickly.

We enjoyed two weeks in this comfortable and unique home with an art collection in January 2009. The location was great, easy walking distance to the Plaza, movie theater, several good restaurants and coffee shop, with nearby irrigation canals available for serious walking. In January, the garden was mainly dormant but still a warm and sunny place to sit for coffee or reading. We were able to do several easy day trips - our favorite being the Three Rivers petroglyph site and the Los Alamos National Monument dunes.

At least 4 stars. Our two week stay in January 2008 was a great experience. We are familiar with Mesilla, but staying within walking distance of the park, the restaurants and shops brought a whole new dimension to our visit. From the street the house will not win any design awards, but neither will its neighbors in this historic setting. The acomodations were great, once we figured the heating system. Even in January the patio was a treat in the late AM and PM sun. The kitchen is small, but was fine for preparing simple meals for two. The abundance of walking distance restaurants, made serious cooking a poor choice. The Owner was gracious and readily available if we needed help or advice. The photos on the website are a fair depiction of the somewhat eclectic but comfortable furnishings. Enjoy! We did. Ron and Lady
