“Great vacation rental home and cute hotel!”

Date of Stay: 09/12/11 Review Submitted: 10/18/11

Our stay at Out of Bounds was fantastic! We had a large group so we stayed in the vacation rental home adjacent to the rest of the hotel. The house was amazing! Super cute with tons of space and really neat features. At the end of a long day it was a really nice homey feel to come back to. We saw some of the other rooms as well, and each seemed to have its own unique feel. The views of the city are spectacular as well! The owners are amazing and they did everything they could to make sure we were set for everything from rides, to breakfast, to tours and more. We even came back unannounced at the end of the trip and they made room to accommodate us. I would definitely recommend staying at Out of Bounds to anyone staying in the San Jose area! Room Tip: If you have a large party, the house is the way to go. A great value in Sept! If you're a couple, get the top floor for amazing city views! “Just like home”

I had stayed here back in 2009 and when I was asked to bring my dance company to perform in CR I knew this is where I wanted to have my dancers stay. The vacation rental house in the back was perfect for my company of 11. They all had enough space to spread out, do laundry, cook and hang out. I myself stayed in the hotel itself. The room is comfortable and room #4 has my favorite view. Merenda and Matteo go above and beyond to make sure all of your needs are met, and the guides they set up for us were amazing and quickly became like family. I will not hesitate to tell everyone coming to Costa Rica to stay at Out Of Bounds.

Reviewed June 1, 2011 Meranda and Metteo(owner's) go above and beyond to ensure your stay is absolutely perfect! They helped us so much with organizing our groups experience and Out of Bounds became our meeting and end point during our stay in Costa Rica. All the rooms were spotless, well-maintained with a gorgeous view of the city and the breakfast in the morning was amazing!! I highly recommend Out of Bounds, whether you are on your way to another spot in Costa Rica or in San Jose for a little whilehttps://admin.vrbo.com/haod/200-140712/postReview.html?pageNumber=1&sort=date_of_stay#~I felt comfortable and well-taken care of!! Reviewed April 14, 2011 We chose Out of Bounds on the recommendation of a friend. Before our trip even started Meranda and Matteo were helping out with arrangements and making us feel good about our decision. It turned out to be a great location with plenty of good options close by for great food and entertainment. Our stay was excellent in every regard, from the quality of the service to the rooms to breakfast. A stable internet connection and access to free calls home were also greatly appreciated.

We live in Nosara, and come to San Jo, about, every other month....the folks there have become like family, always take great care of us, and super secure. Great location to everything one would need, shopping, restaurants,,,,, The rooms are super comfortable, and the view, and breakfast are great. There is no place we would rather stay in San Jose. Date of Stay: 10/26/10 Review Submitted: 11/14/10

We just returned from a 12 day stay in Escazu, Costa Rica. The purpose of our trip was my dental work for my adult son. We stayed at Out of Bounds, which is both a boutique hotel and a vacation house rental. They have little signs in the office and house that say: meet as strangers leave as friends. Nothing could be more true! The owners were great to work with and very attentive to our needs. They arranged airport transfers both ways and offered to arrange possible recreational activities (although we didn’t get to take advantage of them due to my son’s dental schedule). Since we stayed in both the hotel and the house, I can honestly say that this property has accommodations to meet all your needs: short or long term. Both the house and the hotel were great: charming and very clean with friendly, comfortable, safe atmosphere. The beds in both the hotel and house are extremely comfortable (which is a wonder compared to other similarly priced hotels where we have stayed in Central America). The hotel itself is pretty new but the house is a bit older. The house has Mexican tile and wooden floors, a huge kitchen. The largest bedroom has a huge sunken tub (my husband estimates 6 X 8 feet). The house has a nice yard with banana trees, flowers, and an abundance of birds and butterflies. There is also an enclosed courtyard with a built in barbeque pit! In the hotel, the floors are wooden and the bathrooms have hand painted sinks. Our room in the hotel had air conditioning. The showers in both the hotel and house had very hot water and great water pressure. Breakfast is complimentary if staying in the hotel and is one of the largest, and best tasting, breakfasts I have enjoyed during our numerous B&B stays throughout the world. The staff were great! The security man was vigilant and observant; we came to feel we had made a friend with him despite the language barrier. The housekeeping staff kept things neat and tidy . Also, they kept better track of my belongings than I did: they could always find something for me whenever I misplaced it ( which was fairly often as the vacation rental house is mammoth). The property is located on the main road that goes through Escazu and is very convenient for getting about town. It is a mixed, residential/commercial area so you are within easy walking distance of the mall, restaurants, and dental offices. The bus stops right outside the hotel gate; or, the hotel will gladly call a taxi for you whenever you need. Traveling

Guest: Wonderful place to solo females to stay for medica
Date of Stay: 09/01/10 Review Submitted: 11/14/10

I am remiss in not posting this review immediately after my stay in September 2009 (I thought I had but...oh well). I'll be returning in a few months and am anxious to experience the hospitality and views that Out of Bounds affords. I travelled to Costa Rica to have extensive dental work done at a clinic down the road. I was very nervous to travel alone in a foreign country for such a long time (two weeks). I had contacted a few B&B's in Escazu by email and Merenda actually telephoned me! She and Matteo are so pleasant and down to earth that I knew this was the place for me! For an extended stay, I recommend the superior suite with the kitchenette. When you're sore, tired and hurting from a day in the dental chair, it is so nice to be able to cook some soup for dinner. Stores are one kilometer away. The decor of the room was beautiful. The sink was awesome! And those rocking chairs...a whole new level of comfort while gazing at the views. Breakfasts were always wonderful and delicious. When my mouth was hurting, they prepared the most delicious smoothies. The fruit was always so fresh! The view from the balcony while having breakfast was a great start to the day. The guard, Ricardo, accompanied me on my first walk to the dental clinic and from that day forward, he always watched me to make sure I got there safely. The grass on the empty lot between Out of Bounds and Dentavac was so high that I had to walk gingerly on the street. Next thing I know, the grass that been trimmed by Out of Bounds' gardener!!! Now that is going beyond the call of service! Matteo and Merenda (and little Marissa) were so delightful and helpful. I was met at the airport by Matteo and driven comfortably to the lodge. They helped me get prescription medication delivered to the hotel. When I took a weekend tour to the volcano, they allowed me to keep my room so I wouldn't have to pack up. The Arenal/Tabacon Hot Springs tour was incredible, by the way. They even arranged for a masseuse to come to my room twice for relaxing massages to soothe me after hours in the dental clinic. When I was finally able to eat dinner, each recommendation was awesome and delivery was quick. I look forward to my return to Out of Bounds. For solo female travelers who are thinking of going to Costa Rica for dental or medical treatment, this is THE place to stay!

Guest: Amazing stay! Better than you could imagine!!-Karm
Date of Stay: 07/16/10 Review Submitted: 11/14/10

This place is just as beautiful as the pictures suggest, and far beyond what you can imagine. The view is spectacular, the service is top notch, and the rooms are extremely clean, comfortable and VERY well decorated. I traveled to Costa Rica alone and was looking for a starting place for my 5 week trip. I decided to stay at this B&B because Miranda (one of the owners) called me... yes, she actually called me from Costa Rica and offered her assistance with my trip, even if I decided not to stay at Out of Bounds. I was blown away! They arranged for a trusted taxi driver to pick me up at the airport; and when I accidentally gave him too much money, he gave it back! I only planned on staying at OOB for 3 nights, but stayed an extra 2 in order to plan the rest of my trip. Mateo suggested a day trip to Poas Volcano, Doka Coffee and La Paz Waterfall Gardens... the price was reasonable and the trip was great. Miranda took the time to map out my entire trip, even suggesting other hotels and contacting friends of hers to help me along the way! They even held one of my suitcases while I traveled around the country!! Ricardo (security), the nicest Tico in Costa Rica (next to you Mateo!) was extremely polite and patient with my remedial Spanish. I had a great stay. I've already suggested it to several people who are planning visits to CR. I will defiantly return to Out of Bounds when I return to the Rich Coast! oh... and I almost forgot the breakfast is amazing! If you're spending time in Costa Rica you will eat a lot of gallo pinto and eggs, but this was some of the best in Central America (including the breakfasts in Nicaragua and Panama!)... AND they have a non-traditional breakfast option too, that includes about 1 pound of fresh cut fruit. Yum.

Guest: Home away from home
Date of Stay: 07/01/10 Review Submitted: 11/14/10

ome away from Home...that is literally what Out of Bounds feels like for me when I visit San Jose. I am originally from the states but moved to Jaco Costa Rica 5 years ago. Whenever I go to San Jose to do whatever it is I need to get done- I stay at out of Bounds which is centrally located to everything in Escazu. To me Out of Bounds has rooms with a fresh Southern California feel. They are painted in colors which I imagine are named- sea breeze or morning due. From the outside it's not at first glance but the rooms are each decorated so nicely and they are so clean and tidy with white fluffy down comforters, beautiful paintings, all the necesities you need! All of that is not easy to find in San Jose if you ask me. And it doesn't end there. Fall asleep at night looking out your window at the city lights below and feel a pleasant breeze....then In the morning wake up to breakfast on the upper deck. Staying here is exactly like staying in a room of my own home or that of a good friends. This is not your big hotel with workout room and pool etc.....it's a cozy place to stay in style. When I chance came upon Out of Bounds- I felt a relief like FINALLY I found a place where I could put my feet up and relax when I am in San Jose! And that was before I met Meranda and Mateo- the owners, They are the nicest two people with an adorable daughter who greet you with a smile and always a Pura Vida attitude! Before getting to know them I felt like I'd already known them for years! I promise you will like this place if you are looking for a CLEAN, NICE, STYLISH, COZY, PRIVATE home away from home wherever you may be coming from! Safe Travels!

Miranda had organised that I was met at the airport - great not to have to organise a ride when so fatigued. She also quickly informed me that my friends had been delayed due to missed connections and then, gave me a choice of rooms. I took the upper level and it was a good choice. She also gave us the opportunity to stay another night when my friends did arrive or not. Nice to have the choice. The rooms are all very clean, modern, and airy - we did not need to use the air-conditioner. Breakfast was excellent with good choices available - all healthy. Both Meranda and Matteo were so very helpful with suggestions and advice that it certainly made my stay with them a pleasurable experience.

The absolute best experience traveling to date . The personalized shuttle service to the beautiful hotel that is exquisite in decor and cleanliness . A stunning traditional breakfast on the terrace overlooking the spectacular view . A tour local tour in the Mercedes Unimog 404 and then off to the Volcano and a nature tour which ends at the waterfalls that are incredible . The rooms and service are unmatched in our trek across the country . The over the top help in our language barrier crisis and helping us in our departure mix up was a life saver . The staff speak 3 different languages and their intimate knowledge of the country and its attractions kept us busy with our comprehensive itinerary . They offer so many services in house that it make things very comfortable and convenient . This is a unforgetable experience from start to finish .

I make a lot of trips to San Jose and usually stay at the Alta in Santa Ana for the view. Last time I went, they were full so I checked out this B&B just up the road towards Escazu. They have the same view as the Alta, but the rooms were better and the price was a lot less. The room was spotless and the beds were great, and they had a lot of nice little details that make this spot very comfortable... and quiet. They serve a fantastic breakfast and the owners are a nice young couple who went out of their way to make me happy - even after I backed into their security gate and dented it :) Sorry!

Out of Bounds has a cool modern simplicity that reflects the best of Costa Rica. The young owners are avid outdoor people with kayaks hanging on the wall and a vehicle that looks like it could go up the side of a volcano. Secure, clean and high on a hill, it has a stunning view of the night lights of San Jose. Breakfast is served on the sheltered deck- healthy CR or American menu. Mateo and Miranda are fluent in Spanish and English and happy to help with any aspect of your trip. I would stay there again and recommend it to anyone.

“An absolute gem of a B&B. We needed a base of ops for a week while house/school hunting, so we were looking for economical comfort in a convenient location (Escazu), with a view, and we didn't want to be locked away in a large hotel/resort where you can't tell what country you are in. Found this beautiful B&B in a web search and booked a room shortly after that - we even got a special rate on the large room with the terrace & Matteo picked us up from the airport. The young couple (she's Canadian & he's Costa Rican ) running the B&B also run various adventure tours and they are some of the warmest & nicest people you'll ever meet and sooo helpful (need to rent a cell phone or car? want to zip line through the forest canopy or free-ride down a volcano? have a thousand questions about getting settled in your new country? No Problem). The B&B they've built is very well done and reflects their great taste and attention to detail: orienting the building at an angle to take in the best views; very tasteful decoration using pieces from local artists; great landscaping; superb quality of the linens & mattresses; rocking chairs on the porches; free wireless; a fantastic terrace overlooking the valley on which to have breakfast & coffee or just sit in the sun. The B&B is also walking distance to some nice restaurants and a little commercial area. About 200m away is a dental office (medical & dental is very good in Costa Rica) so it is also uber convenient for dental tourists. Whether you are on honeymoon, house-hunting, adventure tourism, or medical/dental tourism this is a superb B&B and an excellent value.”
