Best place to stay in St. Thomas!

This was our 3rd trip to St. Thomas and our first time staying at Stonehouse apartments. This is the best place to stay with the best price. The Larimar apartment was accurately represented online. It was clean & nicely decorated. We prepared breakfast & lunch daily and the kitchen was sufficiently stocked with pans, plates, silverware. I was pleasantly surprised to find some extra sugar, salt, pepper & some other seasonings for our use. The view from the covered balcony was absolutely breath-taking! The online pictures are beautiful, but it's so much better in person. Robert & Joanie are so helpful--he took us down to the grocery store the day we got in. They have snorkeling equipment on site for your use. The beach chairs were a nice addition for us to take down to the beach. (You're not allowed to use Secret Harbour's chairs for free.) There was also a small cooler available to carry your drink of choice to the beach. We found Happy Hour at the Cruzan Beach Club at Secret Harbour a nice way to wrap up the afternoon of sunbathing....it begins at 3p and the Cruzan Rum is our favorite! Try the Mango and Passion Fruit mixed with OJ. We did not rent a car during our stay. The walk to Secret Harbour's beach was short and not so bad. The hike back UP to Larimar is a uphill, but we found it was a short workout after lounging on the beach all day. We will definitely rent here again. The breeze the flows through the apartment is so relaxing & soothing....we never turned the A/C on. The WiFi worked well, but our Verizon phone service was a little slow with all of it's functioning. Thank You Robert & Joanie for sharing your little piece of paradise with us! We thoroughly enjoyed it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Ed and Angie, You make me want to stay there! We so enjoyed having you at Stonehouse.

Spent a very enjoyable week at Stonehouse. Joan and Robert are delightful and they were onsite to provide answers to our questions about St. Thomas. The view from the balcony is exactly as pictured. Now that we have become familiar with the island, we are seriously considering s return trip.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

We stayed at Larimar for 8 nights over Christmas. The place is perfect! Safe, clean, well-kept, with all the amenities you would ever want or need for a week. Joan and Robert are gracious, helpful hosts. I always felt comfortable knocking on their door to ask a question. The property overlooks beautiful waters. We rented a car a drove to different restaurants and beaches but spent most our time at the closest beach - Secret Harbor. Not crowded, good food, and great snorkeling. Highly recommend staying in Larimar or any of Joan and Robert's places. Cannot wait to get back!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Rachel... we enjoyed sharing our little slice of paradise with you...

This is our second time staying at Stonehouse. We have stayed in both Sunflower and Larimar. You will not be disappointed. Robert and Joanie deLugo are incredibly welcoming, provide information of things to do while in the islands and are very accommodating. That is one of the many things that makes staying at Stonehouse so nice, all the little things that you don't think of but the deLugo's have. Stonehouse has beach chairs, coolers, snorkel gear, binoculars to see all of the ships sailing by, books to read and many other things that I have forgotten about, but make your trip nicer and more enjoyable. Not to mention all of the standards that you would expect. That doesn't even include the balcony that looks over secret harbor and into a private cove which are surrounded by blooming trees and cactus, truly a beautiful place to stay. The views are spectacular. The location is perfect as well, you can walk down the hill to secret harbor which is a fabulous beach with two restaurants and water activities rentals. You can also drive 5 min into the town of Redhook with restaurants, bars, grocery store etc. and the ferry terminal to all the other islands. We went back and will be going back again you should as well.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Michael... we will take care of your Caribbean home until the next time..

We stayed at Larimar at Stonehouse July 14-19, 2012. It is nothing short of AMAZING! The property is exactly as described and is CLEAN, COOL and wonderful! There is a very large patio window that opens onto the deck to the most amazing million dollar view! The bed is comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked. Extra towels, etc. are available within the unit. There were 2 chairs, beach towels and a cooler for the beach! This property is within a 5-10 minute drive of the Red Hook Ferry and about 40 minutes from the airport. An excellent grocery store was within a 3 minute drive. Secret Harbour is within walking distance (although uphill on your return) which has fantastic snorkeling. The beach also has a great restaurant with delicious drinks and meals/snacks. Stonehouse also has a studio property, Sunflower, which is also beautiful with the same wonderful view and a much larger deck. For us, we could not have found a more suitable property - it had fantastic views (you are very close to the water), very clean property, and everything I could have asked for and more was provided!. Without a doubt, we would stay here again and recommend this property to all our friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This was our second stay at Stonehouse. We stayed in Sunflower last year and loved it. We chose Larimar this time just to get a slightly different view of Secret Harbor. Once again, Joanie and Robert hit the ball out of the park w/ this property and their roles as hosts! We stayed for 6 nights and it was simply perfect...romantic...relaxing...rejuvenating all in one. With all the windows and doors open you just can't beat the cool tropical breeze blowing up from Secret Harbor as you enjoy breakfast on your private deck overlooking the most amazing blue water of the Caribbean! We saw deer below the deck most mornings. Hummingbirds visited the pencil tree and cactus flowers on either side of the deck morning and evening. Lizards entertained with their "push-ups" on the deck railing and even though Joanie probably doesn't want it there....a local Tabbey cat was a frequent visitor to the deck. We didn't fee it but enjoyed the company. The pictures of the room are accurate - the bathroom is kind of small but didn't bother us at all - the pebble floor in the shower was like a foot massage every morning! The Larimar is set up w/ a full kitchen and there is a well stocked grocery store a mile from the property with an amazing (and very reasonable) wine and spirits selection. Hints for a great stay include getting a reasonbly priced rental car (we went through Budget - a little pricey but we only used 1/2 tank of gas for the entire week). Get directions to Hull Bay on the north side of the island for a truly laid-back, "locals" beach. Snorkeling is average there but not crowded at all. We also enjoyed Brewer's Bay beach which is just past the airport near the University. It's a very long, sandy beach - perfect for swimming and lounging. Snorkeling is not that great but again, devoid of crowds with a "locals" feel to it. We found the best snorkeling was at Hawksnest Beach on St John. Trunk Bay is overrated and crowded! For a quick, cheap and delicious lunch we highly recommend The Dog Pound open-air bar right across from the cruise ship docks. The fish tacos with avacado/cilantro salsa are amazing! Pedro, Kelly and Stephanie run the bar and will keep you entertained! We HIGHLY recommend Stonehouse (both Larimar and Sunflower). Joanie and Robert are the ultimate hosts. Location is perfect, accomodations are comfortable, view is priceless....what else can you want? Great way to relax on St Thomas!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Jim and Christine, Wow! So glad you enjoyed another visit and got o explore some of the "off the beaten tracks" locations. Robert and I enjoyed having you over for sunset cocktails on the patio and some catch up. We hope to "sea" you again.

My wife and I just returned from staying here in late-February. Selfishly, I do not want to put this on here (because we definately want to go back), but Joan deserves a lot of credit. The view out of the porch alone makes all the other amenities (of which there is a lot!) feel like bonuses. Clean. Cozy. Creative. All you need to do is get there, find some food, and then laugh at how nice you have it. My wife and I have traveled a lot and when we left we said "well, that's probably one of the coolest places we will ever stay." I left my stress there...if you find it, bury it in the sand at Secret Harbor beach (just a 5 minute walk away and severely underrated).Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

When you book online you never know what your in for and this was just that sort of case. What we expected was nothing compared to what we received! Larimar is a long shot better then we could have imagined! Joanie and Robert have a true Jem here at Stonehouse! We arrived December 15th, 2010 for three weeks, to a very clean and wonderful little one bedroom apartment, complete with a lovely basket of goodies awaiting us from our gracious hosts! The great thing was we arrived after dark, and upon waking the next day were greeted with a 180 Degree view of amazing Caribbean sea with sunrises that are a photographers dream in the morning and sunsets that take your breath away in the evening!! This place is very accessible to the Redhook district so the location is perfect as a home base for so many day trips and excursions! Fine dining is just around the corner as well as many great beaches! If your a romantic couple and Larimar has made your short list...just book it! You wont be disappointed! I awoke today early to write this and was startled by a baby deer off the deck. Have to run as the sun is just now coming up and I need a few more pictures to remind us of why we would recommend this to anyone!... or maybe we shouldn't and just keep it our little secrete!! Joanie and Robert here is to your continued success and thanks for your wonderful hospitality!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

This is a great place to stay for a great price! After spending most of our vacation driving around the island looking for the best beaches, we realized that Secret Harbour Beach (which is only 2 minutes driving/15 minutes walking away from Larimar) was the best spot to go. Not very crowded, great snorkeling (especially past the point on the left), great beach bar/restaurant, great sunsets, etc. Larimar was also in a nice secluded spot, but only minutes to Red Hook and the ferries. The apartment was in great shape, very clean. Had most everything we needed to cook dinners and breakfasts for ourselves. And the view from the porch!!! We could've spent the entire time sipping drinks and relaxing from the porch...amazing. It was also a bonus to be able to use some of the gear that they had too...snorkel fins, towels, rafts, etc. Lastly, Joanie was very accommodating (booked us a great snorkel/boat tour), but left us to ourselves to enjoy our time too. They have very nice properties and we had no issues at all!! The only thing I'm disappointed about is how quickly this place gets booked! I guess we'll have to wait to return....but believe me, we definitely will return!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

When you stay at Larimar or Sunflower with Robert and Joanie, you discover there really is an American Paradise! Fresh flowers and towels daily, a spotless environment, help booking tours if you need it, an insider's knowledge of what to see and do, private balconies, and unbelievable sunsets. The rooms are beautifully appointed, as Joanie has quite the decorator's touch. The area is quiet and private, but close enough to walk to Red Hook and the ferry to St. John, or the night life of that East End location. We've enjoyed every stay, and will be back!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3
