Adirondack Mtn. Chalet Nestled in a Private 33 Acre Forest!
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This relaxing retreat was built to view the sun, the moon and the trees. Nestled in a mature pine forest, the wind whispers through, caressing your ears in the summer, and the snow hangs elegantly on the trees in the winter. Part of a 50 acre tree farm and maple sugar bush, this well cared for property boasts abundant wildlife and a network of walking and skiing trails which take you past wetlands, cliffs and a variety of forest types.
Private and secluded, yet centrally located, Camp Hatteras is located seven miles north of Paul Smiths College on Rt. 30. You’ll be in one of the most varied wilderness areas of the park. We’re located in the middle of some of the Adirondack’s most dependable snow for cross-country skiing, with abundant groomed and back country trails nearby.
The Visitors Interpretive Center is five miles away and is open year round with wonderful hiking, XC skiing, snowshoe trails and educational programs for the whole family.
You’ll be 25 minutes to Titus Mountain Ski Center, Saranac Lake or Malone; 35 minutes to Lake Placid and its Olympic venues; 50 minutes to Whiteface Mountain. The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks (the Wild Center) is 40 minutes away in Tupper Lake.
Camp Hatteras has three bedrooms and sleeps up to 8 people. Two of the bedrooms have two twin beds each and a third bedroom has a full. An open loft has a futon, which can be folded open for another person or two. Two bathrooms with showers make sure that no one is waiting. There is a complete laundry room for those making longer stays. There are toys for younger children to discover, and a high chair and “potty” for toddlers.
A wrap-around deck has a propane grill and picnic table in a screened porch. Bring some water jugs with you, as this 500’ deep well delivers the freshest, tastiest mountain water that you could ever want. You’ll want to take some home. There is a nice campfire spot for summertime marshmallow roasts or quiet fire gazing. The glass front wood stove sheds a warming glow across the great-room’s hardwood floors in the winter.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, electric oven and range, a dishwasher, and all of the things that make cooking healthy, hearty meals possible.
Firewood is supplied for our winter guest’s heating comfort, and a reasonable amount of campfire wood is available in the summer as well. The driveway travels about 200 yards in from the main road and is well plowed with plenty of parking. If you’d rather not heat with a wood stove, the electric baseboard heat is always there to keep you warm.
In the warmer months, there are nearby trails which are excellent for mountain biking with both back country roads and single-track. Designated horseback riding trail heads are less than a mile away. A “Wild and Scenic Study River,” the Osgood, flows nearby with put-in and take-outs within a couple of miles of your driveway. Drop-off and pick-up arrangements can be made. This is a “must paddle” for those interested in wildlife and scenery. Many have spotted the Bald Eagle who has a nest at the river’s edge. We are surrounded by many great fishing spots.
Your hosts, Bob and Sheila, are a former professional wilderness guide, and a life-long resident of the Paul Smith’s area. Between the two of them, good advice—connecting you to great experiences and unique destinations is as close to a “sure thing” as you can get. The temporary use of their brains is complimentary!

Our family of five (three children ages 15, 11, and 6) arrived after a very large snowfall to be greeted with a fire already started in the fire place and harp music playing on the stereo. The house is better than described with everything you need to make it a special vacation. Sheila and Bob are wonderful and helpful owners who were fine with us delaying our arrival and extending the departure date due to a heavy snow delaying our drive up from Pittsburgh. When Sheila saw that we did not have enough snowshoes for the entire family, she went to her house and arrived back a few minutes later with enough pairs so we could all enjoy snow-shoeing as a family. She also lent us their toboggan and a few sleds to use for the week. The area is stunning and we enjoyed staying on the property for sledding and walks. While the entire Adirondack area has many sites to see, it was our time on the property that was the most enjoyable. We also ventured to Titus Mountain (30 minutes), which is a great ski area for families and very reasonably priced. Snowshoeing at Paul Smith's College Visitors Interpretive Center (5 minutes away) was spectacular with groomed trails for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The house has a washer and dryer which was very convenient with a family. The kitchen is very well-stocked and all you need to bring is your food—there are plenty of spices and other items to make it easy to cook. The house is very clean and tastefully decorated. Having two bathrooms was very helpful and the bedrooms are large-size and comfortable. It reached -20 F one night, but we chose to use the wood-burning stove for heat and it easily kept the house at a comfortable temperature (there is also electric heating with individual thermostats for each room of the house). Bob was helpful in clearing the snow from the path to the house when needed and even though you are close to the road, you do not see or hear any noise making it seem you are truly in the woods (which you are!). In regards to a recommendation, we simply say that having rented houses for many years in different areas of the U.S., this was by far the best in terms of the house, location, and helpfulness of the owners and we are already looking at summer dates to return to 'Camp Hatteras' so we can experience the Adirondacks during a different season!Owner response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write this great review Mark! We so enjoyed meeting your wonderful family, and having you as guests at Camp Hatteras. It was nice to have the property so fully used & explored. We'd love to have all of you back this summer. Until then...be well.

It was one of the most wonderful experiences, that I've had with my family, being close to nature in the middle of the forest. The house had all the amenities we needed and even more! The owners are the most welcoming and thoughtful people. They gave us a lot of great ideas on what to do and where to go. Best place for total relaxation and active vacation. We had difficult time getting our 7 years old daughter in the car to go back home to NYC. Want to try it in winter, so will definitely go back again very soon.Did you find this review helpful? We were looking for a quiet get away from the lakes and jet skis. We found it at Camp Hatteras. The camp is nestled in the woods with no other camp in sight. The property was clean and well stocked with the daily needs of cooking, etc. The towels and linens were clean and it good shape, as well a kitchen and eating utensils. The property has a full size washer and dryer. Shelia provided excellent assistance in suggesting places to visit and tours and made a special effort to ensure Camp Hatteras met our expectations. We took full advantage of Paul Smiths' Interpretive Park's hiking trails and were able to get excellent photos of the ADK ponds, mountains, and lakes. We also hiked to the fire tower on Mt. Azure which is a short 30 minute drive from the camp. Travel to Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and Malone is easy and on good roads. I would recommend Camp Hatteras to anyone looking for a quiet family get away.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

Little old ladies taking annual trips since we live in Florida and Texas. This was our 7th and we were amazed at the hospitality. Sheila touched based with us daily and since there wasn't enough snow to snowmobile she gave us all sorts of suggestions. We rode the gondola to Whiteface Mountain and looked like round inflated people with all our "warm" gear. It's the coldest place in the world with the wind blowing but that too was fun. Cabin is very clean and a great place away from home for fun or simply to get back to nature. If we live long enough, we may be checking on another visit with Sheila and Bob. Most of us are 66 and up so who knows what tomorrow will bring. We all recommend a visit without hesitation! I was extremely lucky to come across Camp Hatteras! I was looking for a house to rent in the Adirondacks that was quite, and close by some mountains and hiking trails. Camp Hatteras was perfect for both of these goals! The surroundings were completely quite. You do not see or hear any neighbors. The house is surrounded by many acres of beautiful pine forest, you have complete privacy. Besides there being some trails in the back of the house, there are two mountains and several beautiful trails (in the VIC) just a 10 minute ride from the house! There were dozens of trails and lakes all within an hours drive from the house. Lake Saranac is only 20 minutes away and Lake Placid is only 40 minutes away. The house was impeccably clean. I stayed for 5 weeks from mid-Aug to mid-Sept and I did not see "one" insect in the house for the entire 5 weeks!! That is highly unusual if you think that this house is in the middle of the woods!! The house is very comfortable and there was plenty of heat and hot water. The kitchen was fully implemented and there is a clothes washer and dryer. Wrap around deck with adirondack chairs, and screened in porch. Sheila and Bob are WONDERFUL hosts and helped me with my various logistic and hiking questions and were always available for any help! The business end of this transaction was trouble free! No misrepresentations, no bait and switch, no problems of any type! If you want comfortable and beautiful surroundings for your Adirondacks trip, I could not recommend Camp Hatteras more!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

My husband and I spent four days at Camp Hatteras in early April 2011 and found it totally relaxing. If you are a clean freak have no fear, the entire house is spotless and extremely comfortable. Sheila will greet you like an old friend from the beginning and make sure you have everything you need. If this is the area where you want to stay, you won't find better accommodations.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children.

One can't possibly describe how wonderful the owners are, you have to experience the place for yourself to believe it. The property is kept very clean and inviting and having Sheila next door guarantees your every need is met and advice on what to do in the area is from a local full time resident and guide (can't hope for more!) The trails on the property offer a quick outing opportunity while nearby trail heads offer more extensive trips into Adirondack backcountry. If you like watching wildlife, all you have to do is gaze out of a window in the morning and you're practically guaranteed a sighting. The quite, private and wooded setting gives the feeling of remoteness while a trip to town or grocery store does not take much more than an hour.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Beautiful home, perfect site, perfect location, quiet, peaceful, restful, centrally located to trails and other ADK sites and MOST ACCOMMODATING owners! The home was very clean and well maintained and well stocked (kitchen - spices and tools, bathroom, towels, games, books, and even marshmallow roasting sticks!!! And many activity brochures and trail maps). We have already recommended it to friends and family. It was a perfect home away from home for our family of 6. We would recommend new comers to ADK area to start the vacation at the Paul Smith VIC.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Our family had a great time at Camp Hatteras. Lake Placid is a 35 minute drive away (Saranac Lake is 15) and beautiful views of the mountains are enjoyed during the ride. The house is clean and comfortable and Sheila is a pleasure to work with start to finish. Fishing, hiking, paddling, golfing and sightseeing is all convenient to the house. Stories and memories were fun for all during the evening campfires. It is a great place for a busy family vacation doing all that is available or to just relax and take in the peace and quiet that surrounds Camp Hatteras. We will recommend Camp Hatteras to our family and friends.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers.

Believe the reviews, Folks! This place is a gem! It is so lovely and so well cared for. I tend to be a bit fanatical when it comes to the cleanliness of accomodations. No worries here! Everything was spotless! The kitchen was such a pleasure to work in. It was wonderfully supplied, including full sets of dishes, wine glasses, various spices, even a blender and electric mixer. You really don't have to bring anything from your own kitchen! I also don't appreciate hosts who hover and are intrusive. Again, no worries! Bob and Sheila were the perfect hosts; there, if you needed them, and so very pleasant, helpful and honest. When I walked into the grand room and saw the welcoming fire in the cast iron woodstove, and the bottle of complimentary maple syrup that is produced on the property with a cordial note of welcome, I was hooked! Our three day winter get-away was a Christmas gift from our daughter, Leslie and her partner, Doug. Thank you, guys. Nice find! Thank you, Sheila and Bob. We will be back!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
