Breaking News: Sun Valley Company estimates the new high-speed gondola will be operational from the base of River Run to the Roundhouse by Thanksgiving. Sun Valley placed 7th in Ski Magazine's annual survey of North American resorts, a jump of 4 places. Rankings are decided by readers of the 400,000 circulation magazine. There's more— Sun Valley Resort has been ranked 63d in Golf Digest Magazine's annual "75 Best Golf Resorts in North America." More than 900 panelists looked at hundreds of U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Caribbean golf resorts.

Those results are for all of North America, sports fans! Confidentially, the locals are not so pleased about the good publicity. We'd like to keep the place small and uncrowded, just like it is. But that's not likely to happen, so come before the deluge.

Meanwhile, fall is here. Days are warm and getting shorter, nights are cool, and it's time to make your Fall and Winter reservations. The shrubs and bushes are showing their colors and the trees soon will be dazzling yellow, orange and red. Wildlife is abundant, fishing is good, and when Ernest Hemingway lived here he wrote "Best of all he loves the Fall."

The Townhouse: This beautiful, high quality and very well furnished three-story townhouse is located in West Ketchum at 299 Wood River Drive. You can ski or walk about 200 yards on a private trail to the River Run ski lifts, and it's a 5 minute walk to town. The project consists of only two buildings of 5 and 6 units respectively— no crowds. It is right on the bike path and is a short walk to the Big Wood River and downtown Ketchum. If you prefer not to walk, the city bus stops right in front and there is taxi service.

This townhouse is not the typical vacation rental condo. It is high-end construction and furnishings which have been meticulously maintained. Main floor has beamed ceilings and hardwood floors with Navajo rugs. The top floor has vaulted ceilings. It has been an occasional vacation home and has been rented only for two years. All but one of the other units in the building remain vacation homes for the owners and are never offered for rent. The project is called "Townhomes At River Run."

The main living area is on the second floor above the large two-car heated garage. The tiled kitchen has modern appliances with built-in microwave, gas stove and a bar with stools. The dining area sits six comfortably, and has a balcony with an outdoor gas grill.

The living area is spacious and bright, with windows and glass doors on two sides, providing views of the Smokey mountains. The gas fireplace is set in a floor-to-ceiling stone chimney, which also houses the entertainment center with 42” TV, DVD and surround sound. Outside there is a fenced private (for our unit only) lanai with flower garden with hot tub.

On the top floor are two complete master suites, each with its own stairway, queen size beds, vaulted ceilings, huge closets, TV and separate tiled baths with shower and tub. One bedroom has a fireplace. The third bedroom, furnished with two twin beds, its own bath and TV, is on the ground floor. The twin beds can be joined together to form a king bed if requested. There is a washer and drier.

The Town: In Ketchum there is the magnificent new Community YMCA with several pools, yoga, martial arts, climbing gym, ballet and many other activities for kids of all ages. It's brand new, squeaky clean and low cost.

It would be hard to find a better condo in a better location for anywhere near our prices. We can offer low rates because this unit is truly rented and managed by its owners — two full-time local families. No property management commissions are paid so few luxury condos of comparable quality and location can be had at our prices. This townhouse is also available for monthly, seasonal or long-term rental. And ask us about our classic log house in Sun Valley available for all or part of next winter, and the beautiful vacation houses in Maui.

  • I stayed here with my three fishing buddies. We've been coming to Ketchum once a year for over 15 years....fishing the Big Wood, Silver Creek and the South Fork. Our time in Ketchum is special; we look forward to it every year. We were fortunate to find Bruce's condo on VRBO. We had a great stay. The condo is roomy, modern, well-appointed, clean, and very accessible. Everything was just as advertised. We pulled into the garage fairly late on our first night, and made ourselves at home. We'll be back next year.

  • We spent 10 days in this splendid Ketchum townhome. The experience was so positive that I wanted to relay some of our experience to others who might be looking for just the right spot in Ketchum. First of all, the location was superb. Unless you want to be out in the mountains with lots of open space, THIS is where you want to be. Our stay was in summer, but I can see that what we experienced would be even more true of winter. Everything is right out the door, and in winter everything will include the brand new base-to-Roundhouse gondola. You can't stay in a quality place any closer to the lift base and gondola than this Townhome at River Run. In summer, with the incredible weather for which SV is famous, you will have no hesitation in walking to whatever - groceries, movies, restaurants, parades, concerts. Of course, you don't have to walk - this place has a double garage and there's also the free area bus that stops nearby. Before I leave the subject of location, consider also that the Bigwood River is virtually across the street, and I saw people taking good-sized fish right below the bridge to the lifts. The other thing that makes this townhome so great is the quality of its construction. If anything, it's overbuilt according to details. The doors, for example, feel like they belong in one of those Sun Valley mega-mansions. All the surfaces are superb and make you feel rich. Then there's the layout. We were traveling with another couple. How many times have you wished that each of two couples could have a master suite of equal and excellent quality? This townhome not only has that, but the suites are so private that they are accessed by totally separate staircases from the great room! The great room itself is really really the right design. It has the living room/TV settup (with good seating) on one end, the kitchen (with very ample counterspace and storage plus counterseating) in the middle, and the dining area on the opposite end. Everything is open, everyone is together and able to help with dinner! Equipment and appliances are as good as we have at home, and eating in just feels like what you want to do. Really, I can't imagine a better value than this townhome for an extended Ketchum stay. The owners are the managers. Their rates are super reasonable, I guess because they don't pay commissions to property managers, and they are caring local people who were there for us when we needed something as simple as some advice on dining. Dealing with VERY nice people makes a difference to us. I can't recommend strongly enough that you talk to Bruce before checking on other, more anonymous sources for your lodging!
