Casita Dragonfly is one of the few affordable single-family homes for rent in the Mahahual area. 11 kilometers south of Mahahual central, you find Casita Dragonfly. Our humble casita Offering two bedrooms with Queen Bed with additional fold out Futon Upstairs, Double Bed Downstairs and two bathrooms on a property that you will enjoy all to yourself. This is not a resort, or a duplex or a complex. It’s your very own beachfront slice of paradise. Please see links below for tons of photos of the house, beach and area! Ask for google map location! Ask us anything!
Only one house next door, with caretakers house in between, plus one house a few lots to the north this is a peaceful parcel of paradise, which will not only serve a family of up to four, but is a perfect romantic getaway for two.
Downstairs you find a living room, dining room, bedroom and spacious kitchen plus immediate access to the large shaded beachfront Palapa porch with seating and hammock and the white sands of the Costa Maya. Upstairs, accessed by an exterior staircase is a cozy master bedroom with a spectacular view on three sides plus a roomy ocean view terrace with sunbed and small complete bathroom
Experience sunrise with a cup of French press coffee, (as the house sustains itself with solar power and back up generator we do not offer an electric coffee maker, microwave, toaster, toaster oven or any heat producing electronics and they are prohibited in the home--please do not bring your own..even hair dryers are expressly forbidden)the ocean breeze will dry your hair and-using high wattage items will leave you with no power and us with a very expensive solar system to replace. Bring your lap top to stay in touch with the world if you'd like, through our satellite internet system.
The reef protected waters offer a SPECTACULAR snorkeling experience out to the reef on our two kayaks. Although the water in front of the Casita is nice enough to float in and cool off in you will sometimes find seagrass--- a healthy part of the reef system. most often though, its easy to swim or kayak over We suggest bringing your own snorkel gear for a perfect fit. We can also offer a guide who will come to the house and take you to the reef on kayaks. Available only in winter months.
Standing Fans, Bedfans, and an almost constant ocean breeze keep you more than comfortable on all but the hottest of days. If you are sensitive to the tropical heat we do not recommend our home as we are almost at one with nature, with no means to supply air conditioning if the wind stops. It's rare, but it does happen and we cannot predict when. All windows and doors are screened negating the need for mosquito nets in the evening, but we offer them as they offer an extra layer of protection and they are so pretty! If you find you are warm outside, enjoy our outdoor shower, cool and refreshing! Please though, do remember to help us conserve water, one of our most precious commodities. Conserve, conserve conserve!!!!
Six short miles to Mahahual via either the beach road or the very close access 'new' road you will find restaurants, tiendas, wonderful beachside palapas for a fabulous breakfast, lunch, dinner or refrescas. We are happy to give recommendations. Mahahual and her people are friendly, helpful and geared towards you having an unforgettable vacation.
So are we.
This is really not a party house--it needs to rest over night too! We have few neighbors, but sound does travel and we hope that you would respect other families and other's vacations, and although we have plenty of solar power the system can be ruined by leaving everything on all night.
If you are sensitive to the heat or live for loud late nights, party scenes and pampered luxury, this is not the house! We are unpretentious, but with everything you need for a short or long getaway! Perfect for those looking for clean comfy creature comforts, but off the beaten path!
Adventurers Welcome! We always have a clean and well equipped house, but we cannot control the weather.
Those who do not fear Blue Crabs, Iguanas or Resident Dogs will have an unforgettable vacation!

We had a great stay at El Turix and found Mahahual minus the cruise ship part to be a lovely place to visit! It was so quiet and still. The caretakers, Deidier and Reyna were most helpful. They offered to open fresh coconuts for us each day, helped us score dinner from a local fisherman and kept the beach very clean. Thank you! We all really enjoyed meeting the community of ex-pats in Mahahual. A tequila tasting at the Travel'in with local expert, Fernando was most memorable. Thank you again!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, pet owners, girls getaway.

4 days prior to embarking on our journey we literally pointed to a spot on a map and determined to discover Yucatan MX, Belize, and Guatemala for 23 days. Intent on avoiding resorts and instead explore the land, the locals, the food, the smells, the life of the land we chose, we booked our flight, reserved a car in Cancun, and found only one place to stay, for one week..at the Casita Dragonfly. For far more reasons than its aching beauty on the powdered sugar soft white sands of the Caribbean, for more than its soul soothing peace and quiet, for it's warm waters, or peaceful evening breezes it was by far our favorite spot of the many we went to. We happened upon Casita Dragonfly on VRBO. It was the only place we even looked at. I sent an inquiry about its availability and must have sounded like a flake because I knew so little about our plans. I was responded to within an hour or two by the owner who seemed suddenly and genuinely like a friend who wanted my trip to be special. Once we found out that the house was available we were provided bucket loads of information about the area that seemed tailored to who we are and what we were looking for in an adventure. After flying into Cancun and avoiding the hell hole of a resort town and meandering to Mahahual over 5 days, we arrived at the house in disbelief that it could be as perfect as it was described. But it was. It was better than described. The house was extremely comfortable. It took minutes for us to feel like we were living in our own house, except the blue blue Caribbean slapped at the edges of our soft sandy front 'yard'. We wiled away our days bathing in the sun, kayaking the short distance to plunge our grateful eyes into the warm crystal clear waters to witness the life of the second largest reef in the world. We spent evenings in town or at local boutique hotels chatting happily with friendly locals. Whitney helped us find the best restaurants, the best bars, the best spots to see. She even helped us find towns and sites to see far after we left the house. We didn't want to leave the Casita Dragonfly. We are already planning our next trip back. We would recommend this beautiful house to anybody that doesn't require resort style amenities, but instead like to be alone when you want to be, cooking local lobster on a grill in the sand on the Caribbean. Whitney is honest and sweet and a perfect host. Go here. Listen to her. Do what she says. You will have an amazing adventure.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The Casita was just great. Hours on the kayak and in the ocean sprayed by Dolphin breath. Brandy is such a wonderful tough dog. The caretakers are very thoughtful. Tapas at the Travel Inn-yum! We even enjoyed the flooded road. On our way out the Pelicans were having a feast on thousands of fish being washed out of the jungle. The search for some fresh Sardine bait in Xcalak turned in to an afternoon of fishing with ****** on a dugout canoe his father made 60 years ago. What an amazing treat. Also a day to Santa Rosa where the bridge burned down. We gave our fish to a very hungry family and a monkey drank our beer. I'd like to go back in a couple weeks but no one can get away to come with me. Gee it's fun to be home......I busted through the ice on the pond yesterday... went up to my knees.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This was my 4th year staying at Dragonfly and we say we're going home now instead of on vacation. This year I even saw a mommy and baby manatee while snorkeling right in front of the house. My husband likes to use the kayaks while I snorkel which works out great when I get tired. HE PULLS ME AROUND!! Plus there's an ouside shower to get the salt off or cool down. Dragonfly is far enough from town, Mahahual, to have all the privacy you can ever want on your own private beach, but close enough to run to town for supplies or dinner...Everything you need to cook is provided, except the food of course, but there are also great eats in Maha. Ours favorites in town are !00% Agave, Tropicante, Nahochka(sp) and there are great places on the beachroad to town. Travel Inn, Maya Luna, and The Italian Pizza place top the list. Leave before dark for dinner because the scenery along the beach road is stunning. The usual potholes and topes (ropes),but well worth it for view... Dragonfly is very cozy and decorated nice but every time we get there Whitney, the owner, has added something to make it even more special.....We spend most of our time on the huge porch lounging or eating. The caretakers are there for any little thing you need..... One of the best parts is the upstairs bedroom with the outdoor bed. The breese and waves and view can't be beat. I'd recommend Dragonfly to anybody, couples, families, friends. We'll be booking again soon, but not soon enough!!!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

We are a couple who stayed at Casita Dragonfly for 4 nights in early November, and wished we could have stayed longer! The house is very cute, with a lot of thought given to the many touches that make it so comfortable, homey, relaxing, and fun. As an earlier guest mentioned, hot showers and internet access are not to be taken for granted in this part of the world. The kitchen is both convenient and cost-saving, but be sure to also venture out to some of the great restaurants in the area (the nearby Hotel Castillo serves really yummy seafood!). While there are lots of things to do and places to explore in the area (e.g., snorkeling, Mayan ruins), the house is also a perfect place to just hang out on the porch or on the beach and unwind, read a book, and enjoy the sea breezes. The owners are very communicative and responsive in general: they are up-front and accurate about what to expect and what not to expect, and they encourage questions (the detailed information provided on the VRBO listing itself is a good indicator of this). They clearly want to ensure that you are well informed about the house and the area so that you will be happy during your stay. Whitney coordinated our reservation and before our arrival provided a ton of information about the house, what to bring, where to eat, activities, etc. This is an especially fabulous place for independent travelers who have been to Mexico or other developing countries before and know what to expect from a less developed region. While the lovely beach in front of the house is raked daily, the adjacent beaches are not, so expect sea grass and some sea trash washed up on the beaches if you go for a walk. Depending on when you go there might be sea grass in the water. If you are animal lovers like us you will enjoy the dogs on the property. They really enhanced our stay. They are very sweet dogs and good companions, and it was reassuring to know that they would bark at anyone who might approach the house. It was pretty quiet in the entire area during this time of year, with a lot of houses and hotels unoccupied. This might make some people feel isolated, while others, like us, will welcome the solitude (although the caretakers are nearby, so you are not completely alone). It seemed like businesses were starting to gear up for high season as we were leaving. I imagine that things will get more lively in general, but that the house has a peaceful and private quality to it year-round.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Hi Whitney, I'm sure that D.probably already replied, but I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay in both of your places. The rain was really no big deal. What's a little rain, right? The mosquitoes, however, were relentless in Mahahual. Still, it was a wonderful time. Your house is lovely and very welcoming as are your caretakers (and the beach dogs!). Loved Mahahual although it is a little (a lot) slow in October. Never thought I'd say this but we actually went into town when the cruise ship was in because all the shops and restaurants were open. The town was definitely rocking and we had a great time. We loved restaurant 100% Agave. For quality of food and service I'd put it ahead of any restaurant in Akumal for half the price. Our time in Mahahual was so limited we stuck to your restaurant recommendations. We did stop at Tropicante, but it was our first real sunshine day so we just had a couple of cold ones and some nachos. I did get a great massage there, wish I could remember the young women's name. Feel free to use any of our comments on your guest pages. I almost forgot, MAS IMPORTANTE!! Deb fell in love with your upstairs bed at Casita Dragonfly. Make, model, mattress, where you got it and the bed fans too? Thanks, Doug Again thanks for sharing and hope to do it again soon. DougDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Whitney, Sorry for not responding earlier. Things have been crazy lately! EVERYTHING was outstanding. We loved your new candles!! And the new housekeepers were AMAZING. The only problem were mosquitoes. We had to buy and use mosquito repellent. However the wind came and the problem with mosquitoes ended. Thank you very much for everything and we hope to return soon. Take care and hope to meet you in one of our visits to Mahahual. santiagoDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thanks again for renting us your wonderful little piece of paradise! Our week in Mahahual has, like always, gone by much too quickly. I really have to thank you for two things: internet and hot water! We had some of the worst rain I’ve ever seen in my life… seriously thought we’d blow into the sea, yet the internet kept working!!! And your shower rules! It was the absolute best hot shower I’ve ever had in Mahahual. Your dogs are sweet babies, and I wish I could have stayed longer just to hang out with them. If my dogs ever found out that these guys get to hang out and play on the beach all day, they’d be furious. While Phantazmo will never admit it, I think we’re almost friends. The house was more than comfortable. I only cooked one night (too many restaurants), but I enjoyed lighting all the candles and playing Jazzy songs on my laptop… add to that a little rain and ocean breezes and it was a really romantic night – not that anyone fell asleep early from a little too much wine:) The master bedroom upstairs almost felt like a tree house…amazing breezes… loved it!! Julie stopped by to check on us… all was good. The caretaker was always available if we needed him, and he raked the beach every morning. My absolute favorite part of the day was sipping coffee under the palapa porch and watching the sun rise. The only sounds were the birds and the sea… it was divine… we had a wonderful time!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: We fell in love with Mahahual within 5 minutes of discovering it. 3 months later we found this home and it became ours! That was over five years ago and we still feel the same way. It's not for everyone, but there is something magical about Mahahual.
Why the Owner Chose Mahahual:
We were looking for an area almost untouched by man, so far this is the place. the last truly unincorported area on the East Side of the Yucatan. Yes there is a town, but it's 6 miles away. There you can get almost everything you need for a vacation (except electronics) but at the house, you are on your own little piece of paradise. Powered by the sun, quenched by the rain, you decide what you want to do or not. We bought this house for ourselves, simple, sweet and right on the sand. We bought because it's not Cancun, it's not Puerto Vallerta, it's not Cabo. We've been to all and were taken in by Mahahual immediately. Quiet. Just you and nature.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The best of Mexico's tropical climate and ambiance, but with nice comfy bedding! If you've stayed in Mexico a lot, you know how this is appreciated!! You'll see few people if you choose.
You'll be awakened by the sunrise and you won't mind. They are beautiful, the ocean breezes which are usually plentiful will be your best friend. The palapa porch, we think, is the best in the area...in addition to a sunbed upstairs.
