Escape to the serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains and experience the magic of Virginia country living at our entirely renovated, historic farm house. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a special place to celebrate, or a week-end retreat, you've come to just the right place!

Take advantage of all that nature has to offer by exploring our 130 acres of mountain forests, pastures, gardens, ponds, and historic structures. Watch the fireflies light up the starlit sky as you relax on the porch or on the magnificent covered dock. Hike our mountain trails. Swim, canoe, or fish in our fully stocked, 3 acre pond. Or roast marshmallows around the campfire and listen to nature's brilliant nighttime chorus!

Experience the amazing beauty of the surrounding countryside by visiting Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and 'Old Rag' Mountain only minutes away. Bike some of the most scenic country roads in the Mid-Atlantic region, visit award winning wineries, marvel at the Blue Ridge by horseback, and take home treasures from the many local art galleries and antique stores. If that isn't enough, expand your abilities with yoga lessons, art classes, and drumming circles. And, if relaxation is your primary goal, we will help you to arrange a massage, beauty treatment, or catering on the premises!

Enjoy the wide range of local dining options, from country bakeries, quaint diners, and gourmet eateries featuring local produce and meat, to world class dining at the Inn at Little Washington only 10 minutes away. If you'd rather prepare your own meals, you can do it in your modern, fully equipped kitchen featuring granite countertops and new cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Dining options on the farm range from picnics in the woods to romantic, candle lit meals on the dock or screened porch with views of the pond and the Blue Ridge.

In addition to a modern kitchen, our 1860's farmhouse features high speed Internet and new baths with whirlpool tub, pedestal sink, washer/dryer, and tiled floors and shower. Stone fireplaces and a wood stove add ambiance and warm you in winter, and ceiling fans in every room make the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. Lovely 19th Century wood floors grace the house throughout and historic, winding wood staircases lead to cozy but roomy bedrooms upstairs. Please note: The staircases are rather narrow and steep, and therefore may render the house unsuitable for indiduals with mobility issues.

The cottage has 2 full suites, each with large eat-in kitchen, living area, screened porch, bedroom, and bath. The Pond View suite has a queen and twin bed, whirlpool tub and shower, and fireplaces up and downstairs, whereas the Mountain View side has a queen and double bed, large tiled shower, and wood stove downstairs.

One suite is perfect for a couple and small children; rent both for a large family or to share the house with friends. Regardless, you will have private use of the house.

Available April 1 is our brand new Barn apartment! Stay in our lovely 2 bedroom loft over the barn and enjoy spectacular views of the Blue Ridge from every room. Entirely modern with glass front wood stove, slate and wood flooring, soapstone counters, and stainless appliances, this is a most special upscale addition to our farm!

Finally, if you would like to fully experience rural life, you are welcome to help us with the many projects that farm living offers, from gardening and caring for the animals to projects around our restored 1860s log barn. We will make every effort to customize your stay so that your experience is memorable! Friendly, well mannered pets are welcome. We are a non-smoking property.

We arrived in the afternoon, and after a great drive through picturesque landscape were not disappointed by the farm accommodations in its 'private valley' of rolling hills with incredible views. Greeted with freshly picked flowers on the kitchen table and lots of local info we started by exploring the farm. My kids loved that they could run around and feed the goats, mules and chickens. My 5 yr old was especially taken by the chicken house where we could collect eggs every morning - delicious! The house was clean and bright just as described, and very cosy. The fire place was ready to light with lots of wood available for a roaring fire in the evening. The next morning we met Steve who showed us around, filled us in on the History of the place and was incredibly friendly and patient with our kids. We spent the remainder of the day driving across the mountain ridge over to Luray Caverns, which were spectacular. We hit the local pizza place and corner store in Sperryville on the way back which were great- such a friendly town. Unfortunately my little boy became very sick and we were unable to hike or explore the local area more, but there was so much for my 5yr old to do around the farm it didn't stop her from having a wonderful experience - from helping Andrea in the veggie garden, playing with the dogs, cats, feeding the goats (and the excitement of them escaping from their pens) feeding the chickens, looking at the chicks, walking across the hill to the sheep grazing, going on the paddle boat on the pond (life vest provided), and sitting around a fire pit roasting marshmallows on sticks and waiting for the stars to appear. We were all sad to leave and can't wait to return! Thank you Steve and Andrea for sharing your idyllic farm.

We stayed two nights on a beautiful weekend in early March. The farm house is on a beautiful property (as shown in the photos) a short distance from Old Rag and Sperryville. The setting alone made it worth it. So serene and relaxing. Andrea and Steve are incredibly accomodating and helpful hosts. The suite we rented (the pond suite) was cozy and clean. The whirpool tub and fireplace were great after a day's hiking. In the morning we had breakfast with eggs from the farm. All in all a wonderful place to stay. Only downside is that there is little soundproofing with the other suite so you can hear everything happening on the other side of the walls, and in particular the creaking of steps were very loud. Also the bathroom isn't on the same floor as the bedroom. Not a big deal but worth noting. Still would highly recommend for the sheer beauty of the site.

My wife and I stayed two November nights in the beautifully restored farm house at Cardinal Springs and are anxious to go back. The rolling fields, ponds and mountain view make this a wonderful setting outside, and inside is just as pleasing, especially so on a cold autumn evening with use of two working fireplaces. The owners are most accommodating, allowing you to feel as if it's your very own cozy farmhouse.

The listing was accurate regarding the location. The house was clean and beautifully maintained. The owners were wonderful hosts. It is a beautiful location. So serene. I would highly recommend this rental. The information we received in advance was helpful with directions, attractions, restaurants. Do not depend on GPS. It was a perfect place for our grandchildren. They fell into bed every night.

I can't say enough about what a beautiful and relaxing place this is. We got exactly what we hoped for, a relaxing weekend, peace and quiet, some biking and hiking and a sweet sadness for having to leave. The chickens and goats are fun and make sure you see Willie, he's a goat but must have been a cat in a past life. There is so much to enjoy and do you will never be bored and yet you can pass hours just sitting outside and reading but do bring the bug spray!

Thank you for sharing your serenity with us! The children thoroughly enjoyed fishing in the pond during the 2012 July Heatwave. I must say, as the Mom afraid of flying insects and 8 legged creatures, I was the first in our family to jump into the pond off the dock! We all loved the fresh blackberries in the morning as well as the lovely cherry tomatoes at night. We looked forward to sharing our lettuce treats the Harriet, Dani, and friends. My 6 year old daughter was a delight to watch disable the electric fence to put the chickens to bed. Not one bit of instruction was needed from her engineer father. It was also fun to pick the eggs and know that they are organic and the chickens/hens are farm friendly! As a family with no pets, we enjoyed pretending that we had so many great family members of four legs (cats, horses, mules, goats, dogs). We hope to return sometime in the fall. I can bring my mom, who would completely fall in love with you and the property and what lives on it. Thanks for a lovely time.

We have had a wonderful time at Cardinal Springs and can hardly believe the week is over. Rob, Eric, and I loved boating and swimming in the pond, taking long strolls on the property and visiting the animals. Our son Eric loves the chickens and the goats, especially the baby goats. We also fed the horses and spent quality time with Thomas Jefferson. Our dog, Rudy, had a great time and we're so happy to have found this pet friendly place. He loved playing, running, and meeting all the animals. Thank you both for everything!

This was the perfect place for us during Craig's wedding week. A place to relax in the midst of lots of business. Our little boys loved the farm and its animals and we adults especially appreciated your lovely gardens! All the best. We hope to see you the next time we are in Virginia.

Thank you for providing our family with the perfect respite for the week. The boys had so much fun feeding the horses, goats, and chickens and cuddling with "Thomas Jefferson"! Reed and Rick had a blast canoeing, fishing, and roasting marshmallows. What a wonderful surprise it was for Rick to see a mother bear and her two cubs on an early evening hike in the hills above your house! Each day our family enjoyed a terrific hike in the Shenandoahs, capped with a phenomenal spring trek up Old Rag. You have a truly special hollow! Thank you for sharing it with us.

                  Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves 'refugees' from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county 'Poor Farm' in 2004 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (2 mules, 2 horses, 7 goats, 16 chickens, 2 dogs, 4 barn cats, with more planned!). In 2010, we moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. And in 2012, we restored the old chicken coop and added chickens to our little menagerie. We also completed work on a new barn that includes a new 'Barn Loft' to accommodate additional visitors. Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with those who stay with us!

                  Why the Owner Chose Sperryville:
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
Our property is secluded, at the end of a lovely country lane only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. Our friendly farm animals will love and entertain you. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is just the place!
