Cardinal Springs--Serenity and Adventure on 130 Private Acres!

Escape to the serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains and experience the magic of Virginia country living at our entirely renovated, historic farm house. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a special place to celebrate, or a week-end retreat, you've come to just the right place!

Take advantage of all that nature has to offer by exploring our 130 acres of mountain forests, pastures, gardens, ponds, and historic structures. Watch the fireflies light up the starlit sky as you relax on the porch or on the magnificent covered dock. Hike our mountain trails. Swim, canoe, or fish in our fully stocked, 3 acre pond. Or roast marshmallows around the campfire and listen to nature's brilliant nighttime chorus!

Experience the amazing beauty of the surrounding countryside by visiting Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and "Old Rag" Mountain only minutes away. Bike some of the most scenic country roads in the Mid-Atlantic region, visit award winning wineries, marvel at the Blue Ridge by horseback, and take home treasures from the many local art galleries and antique stores. If that isn't enough, expand your abilities with yoga lessons, art classes, and drumming circles. And, if relaxation is your primary goal, we will help you to arrange a massage, beauty treatment, or catering on the premises!

Enjoy the wide range of local dining options, from country bakeries, quaint diners, and gourmet eateries featuring local produce and meat, to world class dining at the Inn at Little Washington only 10 minutes away. If you'd rather prepare your own meals, you can do it in your modern, fully equipped kitchen featuring granite countertops and new cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Dining options on the farm range from picnics in the woods to romantic, candle lit meals on the dock or screened porch with views of the pond and the Blue Ridge.

In addition to a modern kitchen, our 1860's farmhouse features high speed Internet and new baths with whirlpool tub, pedestal sink, washer/dryer, and tiled floors and shower. Stone fireplaces and a wood stove add ambiance and warm you in winter, and ceiling fans in every room make the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. Lovely 19th Century wood floors grace the house throughout and historic, winding wood staircases lead to cozy but roomy bedrooms upstairs. Please note: The staircases are rather narrow and steep, and therefore may render the house unsuitable for indiduals with mobility issues.

The cottage has 2 full suites, each with large eat-in kitchen, living area, screened porch, bedroom, and bath. The Pond View suite has a queen and twin bed, whirlpool tub and shower, and fireplaces up and downstairs, whereas the Mountain View side has a queen and double bed, large tiled shower, and wood stove downstairs.

One suite is perfect for a couple and small children; rent both for a large family or to share the house with friends. Regardless, you will have private use of the house.

Finally, if you would like to fully experience rural life, you are welcome to help us with the many projects that farm living offers, from gardening and caring for the animals to projects around our restored 1860s log barn. We will make every effort to customize your stay so that your experience is memorable! Friendly, well mannered pets are welcome. We are a non-smoking property.

Why the Owner Chose Sperryville

The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse

Our property is secluded, at the very end of a lovely country road only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is for you!

Owner's Map of Sperryville

Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves "refugees" from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county "Poor Farm" in 2002 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (2 mules, 2 horses, 1 dog, and 4 cats with more planned!). Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with others! We recently moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. We plan to continue renting our guest house because we have thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful friends we have made by doing so.

Incredibly beautiful and relaxing family destitnation for years to come

Guest: Christa (Arlington)
Date of Stay: 04/19/12 Review Submitted: 04/26/12

This was our second wonderful stay at Cardinal Springs Farm. We absolutely love it. Our first visit was last Fall, when our son was 11 months old. The fall colors were in full bloom. We enjoyed relaxing outside by the pond, playing in the grass, and nightly fires. Maggie and Molly are the sweetest dogs, and our son loved them.  The cabin is delightful, everything for cooking and grilling is provided. Andrea did a great job renovating the place. There's a wonderful screened porch where we ate breakfast and enjoyed the misty mornings. There are expansive grassy fields to lounge in. We love that we can take our dog, who enjoyed running around and splashing in the pond. The pond is gorgeous, with a large gazebo for relaxing. The mountain views are breath taking. This time spring was in the air, with the addition of chickens, 5 goats, 2 of them are babies. Our son had so much fun as they all surrounded him and let him pet them. TJ, one of the farm cats, was super friendly, crawling in our son's lap and letting him hug and pet him.  Andrea has a beautiful garden growing, and we picked incredibly delicious lettuces for a delightful salad. We can't wait for the eggs from the new chickens. We have definitely found our family mountain retreat. We've already formed wonderful memories and have some incredible pictures.  You cannot find a lovelier place or more gracious hosts. Andrea recommended the Fodderstack 10k and my husband ran in it. Starting yet another yearly tradition for us. There are several nice restaurants in Sperryville, but I must mention the Copper Fish restaurant in Culpeper. It was fantastic. The town is lovely as well, with neat stores, a wonderful playground, and a great coffee shop. Totally worth the drive. I cannot recommend Cardinal Springs enough, I just hope the secret doesn't get so out there that we won't be able to make our new semi-annual trips with our family!

Wonderful stay!

Guest: Family of 5 (Alexandria, VA)
Date of Stay: 03/09/12 Review Submitted: 03/12/12

We had a lovely weekend stay at Cardinal Springs farm. The Mountain View suite was very comfortable for our family of two adults and three children. The children loved been around all the animals and helped feed them. They would have taken the home if they could! We also went canoeing on the pond, for walks around the farm, and enjoyed watching the sunset with the view of Old Rag in the distance. It was so peaceful and relaxing! Andrea and Steve recommended the Thornton Grille restaurant and we went for brunch on Sunday which was very good, and also Roy's market, where we bought a delicious blueberry pie. They were delightful hosts! We highly recommend this place. It trully exceeded our expectations. We hope to be back very soon!

have a break !

Guest: cocawesome (Lynchburg, VA, USA)
Date of Stay: 11/05/11 Review Submitted: 01/08/12

This farm house is ideal for a natural break. We spent three very pleasant days here. The house is fully equipped, and everything made us feel at home. The cats are very welcoming, the owners too. Our children liked to canoe on the small pond, caress the horses, and in brief, experience the country! Shenondoah is very close. The small village (Sperryville), situated 8 minutes by car, has some very nice businesses. We enjoyed one of the restaurants, in an art gallery with a small store, and very good farm produce: meat, eggs, butter and SPECIAL milk. Sale apples also. We deeply recommend this small paradise.

Imagine a comfy bed, a cozy living room, a fully equipped kitchen, flowers blooming all around, 4 friendly cats, 2 apple and carrot loving horses, 2 personality filled mules, and two incredibly gracious hosts... Now imagine 130 acres of foothills with autumn colored foliage, a garden filled with herbs, vegetables, and flowers flowers flowers, and a 3 acre pond - reflecting the colors - on which a guest can float in a canoe and relax. This is a magic place. These are generous, thoughtful hosts. This is a perfect vacation!

Serenity and Adventure for Sure at Cardinal Springs

Guest: Kathleen (Arlington, VA)
Date of Stay: 09/09/11 Review Submitted: 09/27/11

My friend and I rented the Cardinal Spring's farmhouse for my sister's birthday celebration. The owner's organized our limo escorted wine tour which took us to 4 local wineries. We had a blast. The farmhouse is located on the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountain surrounded by horses, a lake and historic buildings. Everyone enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and beautifully decorated farmhouse. We were conveniently located near Sperryville and enjoyed many of the fine restaurants and shopping opportunities. Cardinal Springs is truly Serenity and Adventure. Well worth the price.

A Memorable Week

Guest: Sharon, Mike, and Tony
Date of Stay: 08/28/11 Review Submitted: 09/05/11

What a memorable week we've had! Mother Nature hit us with an earthquake AND Hurricane Irene--who could have anticipated that? Fortunately, we were able to also enjoy the other beauties of nature that surrounded us here. The pond, the cats, the dogs, the hills, and the other animals granted us a fairly relaxing experience at your farm (at least as relaxing as it can be with an active toddler!). Special thanks to Maggie, Molly, and TJ for being such great companions to our son. I snapped several shots of him with his new 4 legged friends and will share them with you. Also thanks to both of you for being such gracious hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this cozy getaway spot.

Even Better the Second Time!

Guest: Jeff, Shannon, Carter, Jackson, and Amos
Date of Stay: 08/10/11 Review Submitted: 09/05/11

Shannon, our dogs, and I had the best time! We only left the grounds once for a whiskey tour and some antiquing. The farm is so restorative--our second trip was even better than the first. We love the newsest addition to your family. Molly sure knows how to swim! I think our goldens are embarrassed to be called sporting dogs now. Maggie treated us like long lost friends. Nahum was such a help. He is so pleasant. It took some effort, but we were able to communicate. Susan gave us a tour of your house. It is just amazing. Thanks for sharing your place with us. I'm sure we'll be back. Next time we'll make sure you guys will be around.

You have a beautiful farm in an idyllic location. And you have done all you can to make it welcoming and comfortable for your guests. All three of us were really impressed...me with the dark sky, Alex with the fishing (big catfish!), and Bonita with the finishing touches you have made to your house and garden. We'll be back again and enjoy more of what you have to offer here.
