Newly Renovated Historic Farmhouse on 130 Private Acres!
Escape to the serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains and experience the magic of Virginia country living at our entirely renovated, historic farmhouse. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a special place to celebrate, or a week-end away from it all, you've come to just the right place!
Take advantage of all that nature has to offer by exploring our 130 acres of mountain forests, pastures, gardens, ponds, and historic structures. Watch the fireflies light up the starlit sky as you relax on the porch or on the magnificent covered dock. Hike our mountain trails. Swim, canoe, or fish in our fully stocked, 3 acre pond. Or roast marshmallows around the campfire and listen to nature's brilliant nighttime chorus!
Experience the amazing beauty of the surrounding countryside by visiting Shenandoah National Park and "Old Rag" Mountain only minutes away. Bike some of the most scenic country roads in the Mid-Atlantic area, visit award winning wineries, and take home treasures from the many local art galleries and antique stores. Experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge on horseback! Go on one of the many trail rides or try your hand at fox hunting. If that isn't enough, expand your abilities with yoga lessons, art classes, and drumming circles. And, if relaxation is your primary goal, arrange a massage, beauty treatment, or catering on the premises!
Enjoy the wide range of local dining options, from country bakeries, quaint diners, and gourmet eateries featuring local produce and meat, to world class dining at the Inn at Little Washington only 10 minutes away. If you'd rather prepare your own meals, you can do it in your modern, fully equipped kitchen featuring new stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and cabinetry. Dining options on the farm range from picnics in the woods to romantic, candle lit meals on the dock or screened porch with views of the pond and the Blue Ridge.
In addition to a modern kitchen, our 1860's farmhouse offers a new bath with whirlpool tub, pedestal sink, washer and dryer, tiled floors, and pond views. Two fabulous stone fireplaces will warm you in the winter, one in the cozy living area and the other in the large bedroom at the top of the original, refinished winding staircase. Please note that the stairs are very narrow and steep and therefore may render the house unsuitable for individuals with physical limitations.
Refinished 19th Century wood floors grace the house throughout, and ceiling fans in every room render the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. Guests who would like double the room are welcome to contact us about renting the adjoining side of the farmhouse, which has a king and double bed (additional charges will apply). In addition, the property offers fenced pastures and a barn for boarding horses. Some small pets are permitted upon request. We are proud to be a non-smoking property.
Finally, if you would like to fully experience rural life, you are welcome to help us with the many projects that farm living offers, from gardening and caring for the animals to projects around our restored 1860s log barn. We will make every effort to customize your stay so that your experience is memorable!

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2004
Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves "refugees" from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county "Poor Farm" in 2002 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (2 mules, a horse, and 3 cats with more planned!). Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with others!
We live in the little town of Washington, approximately 10 minutes from the farm, and are just embarking on the exciting project of building our dream home--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch and view of Old Rag and the Blue Ridge--on the farm. We plan to continue to rent our guest house because we have thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful friends we have made by doing so.
Why the Owner Chose Sperryville
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!
The Unique Benefits of this Guest House
Our property is secluded, at the very end of a lovely country road only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is for you!

Andrea and Steve-- Thanks so much for your warm hospitality. It was a joy to be at Cardinal Springs Farm for 3 days--relaxing, pleasant, rejuvenating. I think I had the best salad I've every had in my life with your veggies. Most of all, I love your vegetable gardens. I'm just blown away by them (and I work at the botanical garden in Richmond). You've raised the bar for me with respect to plans I have for my own vegetable garden in the back yard at home. Thanks again for everything! --Adele, Charles, and Phoebe

Andrea and Steve: Of all the places we've been, this one stands out as special. Within hours of arriving we felt at home. What a refreshing change from the city: boating on your beautiful pond, eating every meal on the porch, gathering a bounty of vegetables from the garden, exploring the trails and woods. We always came back to the comforts and charm of the farmhouse. We look forward to returning again soon and having our friends and family share this one-of-a-kind experience. --Elizabeth and Jonathan

Andrea and Steve, Thank you so much for sharing this lovely place with us! It was the perfect getaway and belated anniversary celebration. Your sweet kitties greeted us so warmly, and we enjoyed their company during our stay. We can't remember when we last saw the night sky so clearly--it was an unbelievable sight from your yard! The gardens were a beautiful part of the grounds, and we spotted at least a dozen butterflies there on Saturday. The farmhouse was the perfect size, wonderfully clean, and had everything we needed. We hope to be back again soon! --Lauren and Chris
