Incredibly beautiful and relaxing family destitnation for years to come

Guest: Christa (Arlington)
Date of Stay: 04/19/12 Review Submitted: 04/26/12

This was our second wonderful stay at Cardinal Springs Farm. We absolutely love it. Our first visit was last Fall, when our son was 11 months old. The fall colors were in full bloom. We enjoyed relaxing outside by the pond, playing in the grass, and nightly fires. Maggie and Molly are the sweetest dogs, and our son loved them.  The cabin is delightful, everything for cooking and grilling is provided. Andrea did a great job renovating the place. There's a wonderful screened porch where we ate breakfast and enjoyed the misty mornings. There are expansive grassy fields to lounge in. We love that we can take our dog, who enjoyed running around and splashing in the pond. The pond is gorgeous, with a large gazebo for relaxing. The mountain views are breath taking. This time spring was in the air, with the addition of chickens, 5 goats, 2 of them are babies. Our son had so much fun as they all surrounded him and let him pet them. TJ, one of the farm cats, was super friendly, crawling in our son's lap and letting him hug and pet him.  Andrea has a beautiful garden growing, and we picked incredibly delicious lettuces for a delightful salad. We can't wait for the eggs from the new chickens. We have definitely found our family mountain retreat. We've already formed wonderful memories and have some incredible pictures.  You cannot find a lovelier place or more gracious hosts. Andrea recommended the Fodderstack 10k and my husband ran in it. Starting yet another yearly tradition for us. There are several nice restaurants in Sperryville, but I must mention the Copper Fish restaurant in Culpeper. It was fantastic. The town is lovely as well, with neat stores, a wonderful playground, and a great coffee shop. Totally worth the drive. I cannot recommend Cardinal Springs enough, I just hope the secret doesn't get so out there that we won't be able to make our new semi-annual trips with our family!

Wonderful stay!

We had a lovely weekend stay at Cardinal Springs farm. The Mountain View suite was very comfortable for our family of two adults and three children. The children loved been around all the animals and helped feed them. They would have taken the home if they could! We also went canoeing on the pond, for walks around the farm, and enjoyed watching the sunset with the view of Old Rag in the distance. It was so peaceful and relaxing! Andrea and Steve recommended the Thornton Grille restaurant and we went for brunch on Sunday which was very good, and also Roy's market, where we bought a delicious blueberry pie. They were delightful hosts! We highly recommend this place. It trully exceeded our expectations. We hope to be back very soon!

have a break !

Guest: cocawesome (Lynchburg, VA, USA)
Date of Stay: 11/05/11 Review Submitted: 01/08/12

This farm house is ideal for a natural break. We spent three very pleasant days here. The house is fully equipped, and everything made us feel at home. The cats are very welcoming, the owners too. Our children liked to canoe on the small pond, caress the horses, and in brief, experience the country! Shenondoah is very close. The small village (Sperryville), situated 8 minutes by car, has some very nice businesses. We enjoyed one of the restaurants, in an art gallery with a small store, and very good farm produce: meat, eggs, butter and SPECIAL milk. Sale apples also. We deeply recommend this small paradise.

Imagine a comfy bed, a cozy living room, a fully equipped kitchen, flowers blooming all around, 4 friendly cats, 2 apple and carrot loving horses, 2 personality filled mules, and two incredibly gracious hosts... Now imagine 130 acres of foothills with autumn colored foliage, a garden filled with herbs, vegetables, and flowers flowers flowers, and a 3 acre pond - reflecting the colors - on which a guest can float in a canoe and relax. This is a magic place. These are generous, thoughtful hosts. This is a perfect vacation!

Serenity and Adventure for Sure at Cardinal Springs

Guest: Kathleen (Arlington, VA)
Date of Stay: 09/09/11 Review Submitted: 09/27/11

My friend and I rented the Cardinal Spring's farmhouse for my sister's birthday celebration. The owner's organized our limo escorted wine tour which took us to 4 local wineries. We had a blast. The farmhouse is located on the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountain surrounded by horses, a lake and historic buildings. Everyone enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and beautifully decorated farmhouse. We were conveniently located near Sperryville and enjoyed many of the fine restaurants and shopping opportunities. Cardinal Springs is truly Serenity and Adventure. Well worth the price.

A Memorable Week

Guest: Sharon, Mike, and Tony
Date of Stay: 08/28/11 Review Submitted: 09/05/11

What a memorable week we've had! Mother Nature hit us with an earthquake AND Hurricane Irene--who could have anticipated that? Fortunately, we were able to also enjoy the other beauties of nature that surrounded us here. The pond, the cats, the dogs, the hills, and the other animals granted us a fairly relaxing experience at your farm (at least as relaxing as it can be with an active toddler!). Special thanks to Maggie, Molly, and TJ for being such great companions to our son. I snapped several shots of him with his new 4 legged friends and will share them with you. Also thanks to both of you for being such gracious hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this cozy getaway spot.

Even Better the Second Time!

Guest: Jeff, Shannon, Carter, Jackson, and Amos
Date of Stay: 08/10/11 Review Submitted: 09/05/11

Shannon, our dogs, and I had the best time! We only left the grounds once for a whiskey tour and some antiquing. The farm is so restorative--our second trip was even better than the first. We love the newsest addition to your family. Molly sure knows how to swim! I think our goldens are embarrassed to be called sporting dogs now. Maggie treated us like long lost friends. Nahum was such a help. He is so pleasant. It took some effort, but we were able to communicate. Susan gave us a tour of your house. It is just amazing. Thanks for sharing your place with us. I'm sure we'll be back. Next time we'll make sure you guys will be around.

You have a beautiful farm in an idyllic location. And you have done all you can to make it welcoming and comfortable for your guests. All three of us were really impressed...me with the dark sky, Alex with the fishing (big catfish!), and Bonita with the finishing touches you have made to your house and garden. We'll be back again and enjoy more of what you have to offer here.

This is our second visit to Cardinal Springs and we plan to keep coming back! Thanks for the memories!

We were here less than five minutes when my son Henry and I both said--"Let's give up everything and move out here and learn how to farm!!" You've create quite an inspiring place. The kids loved hiking around the farm with Maggie and feeding/playing with the cats. We loved all of our hikes--snow, hail, rain, and all! We had quite an adventure. It seems you have found the perfect community and that this lovely farm has fallen into just the right hands. We are looking forward to coming back in the summer and taking advantage of the pond! Thanks so much!

Andrea and Steve and All the Animals-- Karen, Rocky, and I have now been here near the end of summer and the beginning of winter. We certainly picked a gorgeous respite from the bitter cold and terrible winds of last week. And what a great way to start the new year! I took a bunch of pictures as we climbed the hill, and we were all quite content to spend most of our time here. Your new house is beautiful and I know Karen got lots of decorating ideas for when we move. Thanks for everything and hope to get back soon. --Gerry For me, it's like coming to a stress free retreat! I'm not a country girl, but staying here is a fun adventure, especially investigating everything with Rocky. --Karen

We celebrated a 40th birthday at your lovely farm--a mother, a daughter turned 40 on November 6, an aunt, and friends. We loved it! Your animals are the best--very friendly!! Maggie was our hiking partner. Ror us-- Chicago/Springfield, IL/D.C. people--this serene atmosphere was a tonic. Dinner at the Inn at Little Washington wasn't bad either (an understatement). We're off to feed the horses then to the airport. We hope to return some day!

We now share the joy and excitement that Samantha, Ken, Isaac and Ruby have enjoyed throughout the years they have been coming to the farm. I am pleased to have met the mules, horses and kitties and to have been here to see the gardens cloaked in fall colors and seeding. Your joy, love and protection of this land and all the creatures on it inspire visitors to value and protect the natural world as well. Naturally, I looked for birds and was rewarded by a yellow-billed cuckoo skulking in the tree in back of the house. We look forward to return and wish you well in all your projects. Thank you!

Cardinal Springs Farm is 130 acres of wonder and charm. Andrea and Steve have painstaking created a breathtaking retreat in the shadows of the Shenandoahs that rewards visitors with spectacular vistas and peace and quiet. Curl up with a book on the covered front porch and watch cattle grazing in a pasture, meander through the flower and vegetable gardens to gather your dinner, run or hike the trails on the property, stroll down to pond for a swim, a bit of fishing or just to while away the hours under the canopy of the covered dock. Cardinal Spring Farm is a treasure.

We had a magnificent time at the farm and in Sperryville. The house and farm were both perfect and had plenty to keep all four of us busy for the week. We also appreciated your warmth, hospitality, and patience with Jack and Nora. Jack was very taken by the horses and mules and learned a great deal about trying new things like canoeing. This was an ideal summer get-away from D.C. We can't wait for our next visit!

I don't think I've ever had a more relaxing week-end. Your farm re-defines "get away." Hard to believe that the hustle and bustle of Washington is so close by the number of miles...but so far from one's mind while here! Thank you so much for opening up your home and your gardens (and friends like Maggie!) so that others may enjoy all that you have obviously worked so hard to make so charming.

Your farmhouse is charming. The bed was super comfy and the landscape was serene. We are so pleased we made it here after it looked like it was not going to happen. Ted said that despite his having to work through the week-end, he felt decompressed. Brownie and Summer loved meeting Maggie. I loved that they went off on their own little hike when you were showing us your new home. These dogs were absolutely exhausted after their first day on the farm. Best wishes with your new home. It is a show piece! Thank you for the tour--we really loved seeing all your wonderful ideas!

What an incredible place you have here! Our family had an amazing long week-end. We enjoyed hiking up on the ridge, swimming and fishing and seeing many deer, including a fawn with its doe. As our 5 year old daughter said, "We woke up to the birds singing to us and went to bed under the stars with the firefly performance." You have provided for our every need, and even enhanced our dinners with the fruits from your garden. We hope to come back to enjoy this experience again soon. We loved that the kids and our dog Coco could roam free and explore all the world has to offer here. Coco spent hours swimming in the pond. I was amazed when he finally decided it was time to get out. Elisabeth and Samuel loved playing and caring for the cats, especially Dixie. Many thanks for the warm welcome and cosy accommodations. Given the damp weather the fireplace was very much appreciated! Good luck with the new house. Bill and Danny

Dear Andrea and Steve, Thank you for sharing such a wonderful property with us. The fall colors were beautiful and the house warm and comfortable. Even though fall has kicked in it is clear that your gardens are beautiful and we intend to return to see it someday in full splendor. thanks! Nicholas and Casy

Andrea and Steve, Your house and land are the perfect places for old friends to reconnect and enjoy their time together. We were so thankful for the peace and serenity and also for the sheer beauty of the house and the surroundings. We also met three of the nicest cats we ever have seen, and enjoyed the sight of the horses and the fish in the lake. Thank you so much for sharing it all! We hope to return!

Andrea and Steve, Thank you for making this weekend so splendid and relaxing. Watching the sunset next to a fire pit, sipping warm apple cider, and petting and playing with the cats (but keeping them away from the fire!). Feeding the fish on the dock on a beautiful fall morning. Walking the grounds and saying hello to the horses. All while enjoying the warmth and hospitality of the farmhouse. You made this weekend so memorable and we can't thank you enough for making sure every detail was covered! We look forward to returning here in the future for another lovely weekend sometime soon!
