We spent 7 nights in Victoria's apartment in late March. At first, I was a little concerned about three of us surviving in such a small space for 1 week. My fears were quickly relieved once we arrived to the apartment. There was plenty of room for us to fold out the sofa sleeper for our son and still move around the apartment comfortably. Victoria's apartment is super clean, well stocked (kitchen and bathroom supplies) and has many amenities that you won't find at a hotel (metro cards, DVD's, brochures, etc.). Our son loves animals and was delighted to be able to see Ginger (the dog) every day. Ginger says hello when you return to the apartment each day but otherwise rests peacefully in her bed. We only saw the cats a couple times during our stay (I am pretty sure they didn't want anything to do with us). There is so much to see and do in D.C. that we were out the door by 7 a.m. most morning and didn't return until 7 p.m. most evenings. The apartment is an easy and safe walk to the metro (1 CVS pharmacy and 9 brownstones away), restaurants, Target, CVS, grocery and other retail stores. Being from a relatively small rural community, we weren't sure how safe we would feel being out in the evening in a big city but were pleasantly surprised how comfortable we felt at all times. One evening we went on a Monuments by Moonlight tour and didn't get back to the apartment until around 11 p.m. but again felt very safe due to the amount of constant foot traffic along the street in front of the apartment. The metro is awesome and super easy to use. The convenience of getting on and off so close to the apartment is invaluable. We drove to D.C. (17 hours, including food and rest stops) and used Victoria's off street parking during our stay rather than trying to park on the street. Our vehicle only moved once during our 7 day stay and that was the day we decided to drive to Mt. Vernon (a rather easy drive). As others have mentioned you do walk through Victoria's living area to reach the stairs to get to the apartment; however this was not an issue for us. Many times Victoria herself was out and about and if she was home we shared a quick "hello" and our day's adventures and moved on. Thanks for your great hospitality Victoria, we truly loved our trip to D.C. and feeling at "home" in your apartment.

My husband and I spent 7 days in Victoria's apartment. We really enjoyed our stay despite my concern of having to enter her living area to get to the entrance to our apartment. Most of the time Victoria was busy or not even home. The one night she was entertaining some friends they were very nice and asked us to join them. One of the nice things about having our host so close by was the availability of information that we got from her. I sent my husband downstairs to ask her questions several times, which was very helpful and made our trip run very smoothly. The apartment is a nice size and had everything we needed. The kitchen area is small and we used it mainly for breakfast and snacks. There is a small, but not too small, a microwave, coffee maker, a toaster and other items for easy meals. The bedroom is in the back of the apartment, we had the windows open the entire time we were there and while there is a bit of noise it didn't bother me, and there were ear plugs in the bathroom for light sleepers. The bathroom is a nice size and there are plenty of towels. We even did laundry one night. The location of the apartment is great. Just a couple of minutes from the Metro, a Target, and restaurants, and a yummy yogurt shop. It was unexpectedly hot when we arrived and it was nice to have a Target and sports store at the corner, we had to buy my husband some shorts and a few t-shirts. We purchased breakfast items at the Target, but there is a grocery store a little further down the road. I make several trips to the CVS to get items if forgot it was so nice to get off the Metro walk into the store and be back in the apartment in 5 to 10 minutes. Getting to the apartment from the airport was so simple, I was quite surprised at how easy it was. Our plane left late in the afternoon and Victoria let keep our bags in the house while we went to the zoo for our final outing, it was nice to be able to come back to her house and change our clothes before our trip home. I loved sitting in the front room of the apartment and watching the people walking down the street, it was a great way to end a day of touring. We had an amazing visit in DC and I feel that my choice of places to stay really made our trip. Many thanks to Victoria and her hospitality.
Owner response:Thanks Loretta and Steve - especially for mentioning your hesitation at first over having to pass through my living space to get to the private apartment. I've been doing this so long now I forget that that might sound weird to some people! While I do enjoy being available to my guests for local advice, and a brief chat if they wish, guests should also always feel comfortable coming and going whenever they please, with no more than a quick "hello."

We stay at Victoria's for 6 days and it was just fantastic feeling “at home” with all amenities of a 5 stars hotel. We travelled from Spain and since we started planning the trip, she helped us through the whole process. First day was booked, and being unable to find another place in town arriving at 2 am, she hosted us at her guest room and prepared a welcome snack and wine for us, just the beginning of a lovely stay. Her house is authentic; the apartment in the third floor is quite, super clean, cozy and beautiful. She has all details/amenities taken care; towels (many of them), information of the area, DVDs, internet and many other little details that make the whole difference, such as metro card. At first place, we were concerned about sharing house with the owner, but she is very independent and friendly, she took care of all our needs and answered all our questions and gave us suggestions, we really enjoyed it. As she said, she lives with a little dog Ginger and a cat. But if you do not really like pets, Ginger is also very independent and will not bother you more than saying hello when you arrive. The cat is so quite that we rarely saw him. The area is safe and her house is located 2 minutes walking from the metro, which allows you to visit the main tourist attractions in less than 20 minutes, very convenient. It is also 2 minutes from a 24 hours supermarket and many restaurants, as she explains in her description. It is great after a long day walking to be able to enjoy a good meal or a drink close to home. I have lived in DC, and knowing the city, I can assure you it is a fantastic and very reasonable price place to stay. If you do not speak the language fluent, it won’t be a problem, she is very understanding and helpful. Whenever we have the opportunity to come back, we know where we will be “at home”.

We stayed here four nights and had a splendid time. We took the Metro straight from the airport to the condo - a total of $4 for three of us - so much cheaper than a taxi would have been! We used the Metro the entire vacation and saved so much money. The condo is a one minute walk from a Metro stop. The Columbia Heights neighborhood was great. We loved 'The Heights' restauarant. Lots of great vegan options. We never felt unsafe but as always you have to be smart when you are in a big city. The condo itself was amazing for the value. It was clean and well cared for. The kitchenette was nice, we kept cereal/milk and light snacks at the condo to save money. All in all it was a great trip and we would definately recommend this unit.

My boyfriend and I stayed with Victoria for five nights and couldn’t have been happier. For such a low price we weren’t sure what to expect, but this spotless apartment was exactly as pictured, with all the comforts and amenities you could ask for. It made for a quiet and cozy haven after a long day of touring the city - with one of the most comfortable beds I have EVER slept in! As others have commented, the location is ideal -- right in the middle of a vibrant neighbourhood and less than a two-minute walk from the Metro, drugstore, groceries and other shopping. We were only a short walk to a number of fantastic bars and restaurants, and never felt unsafe in the neighbourhood, even when walking home late at night. Victoria was gracious and accommodating, and her collection of restaurant menus and transit information -- as well as the Metro Smart Cards -- was a really helpful touch. Overall we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this location!

We had an awesome week staying at Victoria's place. The house was perfect and our area on the top floor was quiet, spacious and had everything we needed. The area around the house had many restaurants and shops. The fact that the Metro stop is located less than a block away was invaluable. Victoria was a host who offerred information on travel, food, etc that saved us money and time. Her dog Ginger was cute! All in all, we had a fabulous time in DC and saw just about everything we wanted to. Thank you Victoria for being a great host.

In my trip to East Coast, I stayed in three different HomeAway rental. This is, by far, the best. It is the cleanest, the most convienence, the most comfortable (even for 5 of us.) The hostess is also the best. She really took care of us. The only regret was that we could not spend time to chat with her more. This is the best place to stay in DC. 15 min from the National Mall, 20 from Union Station, ~30 from DCH airport (with direct subway).

I was so pleased to find a place that would allow me to come and go as I pleased. This perch is the perfect combination of independence and "pampering." Virginia anticipated needs as if by magic, whether air conditioning adjustments or offering the loan of transit cards. The parking situation worked out fine, no hitch as long as you mind the street cleaning signs! Once parked, I learned how to get well into Georgetown for long conference days on a single bus (even easier than subway and a long walk!) that departs a mere block and a half away. The Circulator was a great bonus, as well, just at the end of the block, and connecting to a network of crosstown buses that are perfect for touring on a hot summer day. Virginia was gracious and flexible before and during the stay, reimbursing the 'additional person' fee when I could not bring my children along for sightseeing as originally planned. We did not always cross paths, as I was departing in early mornings (as early as 5 am on public transit and feeling perfectly safe) and keeping late hours as well. Despite this, Virginia was so responsive, even providing a printed document late one night for a reservation after the local library printer failed me. I felt as if I were on an adventure that was made easier by the close access of places to eat, shop, and move on transit that offered more choices than I could access in the span of several days. Virginia's resource for tenants book was very complete, and the wireless internet service was lightening fast. The neighborhood made my stay much more pleasant than a DC hotel ambiance, and I was able to accomplish my stay within my per diem rates, all in the nation's capitol! I look forward to staying again for my conference next June!

The rental property was clean, attractive, and very convenient to the metro station and nearby commercial establishments. The owner was pleasant and welcoming. A great alternative to bland hotels. It was more fun to stay in a DC neighborhood but only be a metro ride away from all the museums and other mall attractions.

My husband and I have vacationed in Washington DC for the last three years and we always try and find a place that's both economical and in a great location. This apartment is in a very vibrant, lively neighborhood and it's super close to everything you could possibly want - stores, lots of great restaurants and public transportation. The apartment is very comfortable/homey and Victoria is terrific. Parking can be a bit of a problem (very limited space and you have to move your car based on the street cleaning schedule and commuter hours) but you really don't need a car because public transportation is so convenient.

Victoria, your home away from home was great! My grandson and I felt like we were walking in our front door every evening. This was his first visit to D.C. and it was truly a plus to be in a neighborhood rather than downtown. The location of the Metro along with the many small restaurants close at hand, made our stay easy and enjoyable. Ginger was a bonus for sure. I will recommend your place to anyone looking for accommodations in Washington D.C.. Thank you

Thanks so much for all your hospitality, Victoria! We loved staying on your third floor & being able to kick back after our long days. It was also so great to be able to have a quick breakfast with the kitchenette, and having the Target so close, it was easy to pick up quick dinners to have in the apartment. We would definitely stay here again! The kids also miss their new friend Ginger! Thanks Again!!

I stayed with Victoria for a total of 5 nights, family joined me after two. The first two nights I almost rattled around the apartment, plenty of space and every thing you could need, right there. When the clan arrived we were a total of 5. Two slept on the pull out bed and one on a blow up mattress in the living room. Snug, but certainly workable. The kids were very happy with their space. The bedroom is cozy with plenty of closet space. The bed super comfortable. All spaces were clean and tidy. Plenty of brochures and suggestions available from the hostess. AS in many other reviews, the convenience of the subway, shops and restaurants can't be beat. I've come home and told anyone who will listen that staying with Victoria while in D.C. is the only way to go.

My son and I spent 4 days here, it was perfect. The apartment is exactly as pictured and described. It was clean, comfortable and had all the necessities, and so much better than staying at a hotel. The pullout was more comfortable than many hotel beds that I have slept on! We each had a TV and DVD player and a wi-fi connection. It was nice to have a small kitchen area to make coffee, toast and snacks, even though we ate out. The neighborhood was fun, the apt is just a half block from the subway and very convenient to shops and restaurants. We enjoyed the Commonwealth Pub, The Heights Restaurant and Pete's Pizza, all within a 5 minute walk. Victoria, our host, was very accomodating and helpful. We were sight seeing for the week, and we were out early and back late and the convenience of the subway so close to the apt. was a huge benefit. We visited all the sites you can think of, had dinner in Georgetown one night at Bodega- a great tapas restaurant there. We attended a Georgetown Univ. basketball game at the Verizon Center-2 stops on the subway! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I would recommend this spot to anyone. As noted by someone else, it is a 3rd floor walk up apt so that might be an issue for some.

The secret is that this is a wonderful choice for people wanting a very well-equipped, very well-maintained 1 bedroom apartment for a short or long stay. It is a short half block walk to the Metro. The neighborhood is attractive and friendly. My husband and I spent a grand total of $32, using the senior fare, for our transportation for the week we spent in DC (Reagan Airport roundtrip and all city transportation). The kitchen has all you need for making simple meals, and the Target across from the Metro and the grocery store around the corner supplied everything we needed. Potential renters should be aware that the apartment is on the third floor, no elevator, in case that is of concern. Victoria, the homeowner, is very helpful with suggestions and advice. Don't miss the Thai restaurant about two blocks away. Delicious. If we get the chance to revisit DC, we'll stay here if we can.

If you want a private, pleasant, quiet place to stay in DC that is convenient to downtown and located in a distinctive, lively neighborhood, this apartment in Columbia Heights is perfect. The apartment is in excellent condition, with upgraded bathroom and a small but functional kitchen area in the living room that is more than adequate for basic cooking and dining. I especially appreciated the views. The living room, which faces the street, has a large picture window that will tempt you to just relax on the couch in front of it and enjoy the view of sky and large oak trees (especially charming in the fall). The bedroom is in the back, facing South, so there is lots of sun all day, and the view over the rooftops is open and expansive. Victoria, the hostess, is most welcoming and helpful. I had a delightful experience staying in this very convenient apartment. I will absolutely stay here again when I return to DC next fall.

We stayed in this rowhouse apartment for a week in late October of 2010. The place is spotless and decorated with all the comforts. We really only had breakfast there but it would be possible to make a meal in the small kitchen. The bed is very comfortable. The apt. is five minutes walk from the Metro, at most, and so very convenient. It is great that this line also goes directly to the Reagon National Airport. Victoria is an unobtrusive hostess who was always helpful when we had questions. We enjoyed the Commonwealth Pub right down the street so much that we didn't try too many other neighborhood spots when we went out for dinner. I was worried about the noise in the neighborhood because we are from a quiet rural area but we were not disturbed. There were a few sirens but nothing that woke us up. All in all, a very good value and metro convenient place for all the DC monumnets and museums.

The apartment lived up to the listing description and the photos are accurate as well. The apartment is clean with a comfortable bed and excellent linens. The flat is clean and well-stocked. We spent a week there in October and appreciated the convenience of the Metro and the bus system. We walked less than a mile to the zoo or you could take the Circulator bus. It's easy to get to Adams-Morgan via the Circulator Bus. It's an easy trip from Reagan to Columbia Heights via the Metro. The convenience of Target, CVS, and the Giant Food Store is great. We enjoyed Sticky Fingers Bakery, Taqueria Distrito Federal, Five Guys, and Pete's Apizza that are all right in the neighborhood. Victoria is friendly and helpful. She has great suggestions for events and sites that you might not know about. We can recommend Victoria's place enthusiastically.

Our four-person family had a wonderful experience here. It was spotless, on a charming street, with lots of great restaurants within walking distance, and as everyone else has noted, less than a block away from the Metro line. We would go out touring in the morning, come back for an afternoon siesta, then head out again at night. It was inexpensive for four people and nice to have adequate space. Victoria was incredibly helpful, always prompt with email responses, and flexible.

Quiet, lovely neighborhood was a perfect resting spot after our busy sightseeing days. The apartment was stocked with everything we could ask for, bed was super comfy & our son loved his bird's eye view from the front window! Having the Metro so close was awesome-we parked our car for the whole week with the exception of the day we trekked to Mt Vernon & Arlington. For quick bites, I highly recommend Potbelly's & Pete's... + Fro Zen Yo is a must! Forgot something?~24hr CVS @ corner, Target down the street, grocery store a few blocks away...this place was the best!

This place was perfect for our family. We have 3 young children, so it fit us just right (might have been cramped if our children were older). The location was excellent - you couldn't get closer to the metro station while still having a neighborhood feel. Also an easy drive down 14th to the Mall if you have a car. So convenient to stores and restaurants as well. Although a lively urban area, we felt safe in this area with our children. Our children loved sitting in the window looking out at the large trees and people down below. It has a very homey feel and Victoria has provided many things to make the stay comfortable. Very reasonable rates too. Would highly recommend this rental.

My wife and I stayed for seven nights with Victoria in September/October 2009. The location is absolutely fantastic. A couple of Metro stops away from the Mall, but close enough to everything you'll need. Victoria is a fabulous host. Happy enough to answer any questions you may have, but also willing to give you your own space as well. The best of both worlds really. I would absolutely recommend this place to any prospective travellers. Thanks Victoria.

Leaving our youngest child off at The The Catholic University of America was indeed very stressful in August 09. I had heard about Victoria McKernans condo from a friend and decided to rent it for my husband and I for 3 days, 2 nights while attending the parent-child orientation and delivering our youngest off to her new endeavor. I have to tell you that I was quite stressed with this parting, but Victoria made our lives so much easier! First of all, the condo is lovely! Everything you need is in that quaint third level. A fully stocked kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, etc, a bedroom for us as well as a pull out couch in the combo kitchen/living area for our daughter. Victoria has menu's for all the local restaurants as well as personal references, and is so helpful in pointing us to needed stores, easy directions, etc. This made our lives so much easier during this stressful time. What a gracious and helpful hostess complete with a lovely, comfortable home! Only a half mile from shopping as well as the Metro! Convenience galore! I recommend it completely and will plan on staying there again this year!

Our family of five had a very nice stay here. We loved giving the kids a taste of city life; walking to the metro, watching life go by out the front window, seeing what it's like to live in a tall building with no yard to speak of. Victoria has the place very nicely appointed and accurately described on-line. It was a bit tight for five, as she warned us, but we enjoyed it so much more than a hotel. And I loved the opportunity for my girls to meet an author whose book they had read! I would recommend this apartment to someone looking for a nice place to stay in DC with a taste of the real city. The neighborhood is not completely gentrified, but we felt safe and comfortable. Having so many major shops and restaurants in walking distance was a very convenient bonus.

Very clean and comfortable accomodations. In a great neighborhood. Very close to shops, restaurants and Metro-stop made the location very convenient. Victoria was a great host and offered some local attractions that we wouldn't have otherwise seen. We had a great time and would love to someday visit again.

Very comfortable & clean accomodations only one block from subway - a perfect match for our sightseeing agenda! The pullout sofa and air mattress also worked great for our 2+1+1 party of four. The outfitting of the unit certainly anticipated our every need. Will definitly rebook the next time we're in the DC area!

My husband and I travel to DC often for work and to visit friends. We stayed here last July and will definitely stay here again. The house is well located - not even a block walk to the Columbia Heights metro station. The neighborhood is great with a bunch of new restaurants and stores right by the metro. We stayed during the week and weekend and always found parking right in front of the house. The flat itself was comfortable and very nicely remodeled. We recommend it!

My friend and I stayed here for the week of July 12-18, 2009. The location is great, and the flat is very comfortable & convenient. We didn't cook any meals, but did eat breakfast in every morning. We stepped out into the street & immediately felt a part of the city life, with the metro less than a block away. At the end of a day of sightseeing, it was a great place to come "home" to and put up our feet. The bed and couch were comfortable & inviting. There was a flip-up table where we put our laptop for internet use. We enjoyed our stay with Victoria, and will definitely stay here again on a future trip to DC. We were very pleased with this rental!

Excellent stay at this property for 2 adults. My husband and I combined business trip/pleasure and found the location easy to access 1/2 block from the Metro. Comfortable accommodations with split rooms for sleeping or watching TV. Comfortable mattress, easily accessible outlets and free WiFi. Victoria was a great host. Thanks, looking forward to our next trip.

My husband & I (ages 50 & 49) are both in good health and found this place to just perfect for us. We were there for 7 nights - it was our first time visiting DC. The unit was both clean & quite comfortable. Having a mini fridge and microwave oven in the unit was ideal for us. That way we could bring home any leftovers from restaurants that we ate at, store them safely, & then re-heat them again. Having free access to use the washer & dryer & wireless internet was also very beneficial for us. The unit's close proximity to the metro really put the icing on the cake. We didn't even have to rent a car. We took the metro to all the places we visited - very convenient! The unit is located in a safe neighborhood, filled with many good restaurants & misc. stores. The owner of the unit is very kind, gracious, & quite helpful. I highly recommend this place to people who don't have trouble climbing stairs.
