Modern, Secluded Maine Cabin on Six Acres on 430 Acre Pond

Year Purchased: 1998

Why the Owner Chose Freedom

This location is so special. It is only about two and a half hours drive into Maine. It is very secluded. The cabin is at the end of a four tenths of a mile unpaved, well maintained, private road, so there is no traffic passing the cabin. The cabin is surrounded by six acres of beautiful, hilly land which form the tip of a "peninsula-like" piece of land which juts out into the lake. There are no near neighbors, AND THERE NEVER WILL BE ANY NEAR NEIGHBORS! I will never have to listen to someone else's television, dogs, children, parties or whatever. I can swim naked if I wish, which I normally do! The lake is beautiful. Rarely is there a motorboat. I hear just the birds, wind in the trees and the wonderful loons. It is really a natures paradise. It is only a twenty-five minute drive to Belfast, on the Penobscot Bay, when I need to get to a super market, or a variety of restaurants, or a hospital. Camden is also nearby, with its arty stuff. Waterville, about twenty five minutes to the west, is also available for more shopping.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin

Because of the natural environment of the cabin, I can leave my life in Pennsylvania back in Pennsylvania! I can "recharge my batteries" in a very peaceful, quiet place. I can relax in the new, private, hot tub, I have the pleasure of using a well appointed, completely new kitchen, with GE appliances, including a gas range and oven, bottom drawer refrigerator-freezer, disposal and dishwasher. The lower cabinets are illuminated, which makes it so easy to find things! I love the Corian countertops. In the great room, with ceiling to the top of the cabin, I can relax on a LL Bean leather sofa with ottoman. I can enjoy a fire in the fireplace if it is chilly. In the spring and fall we usually have a fire. We eat mostly in the screened front porch which overlooks the woods and lake and which is a step away from the kitchen. Our king and queen beds are custom made with storage drawers and have firm mattresses and white down pillows. We have two kayaks, a single and a double, which go great on the lake. The eighty-five foot walkway to the lake has six lights under the railing so we can sit on the dock at 2:00 A.M. if we wish, or take a moonlight ride in the kayaks. Swimming is done in a different part of the lake from the dock. There is a short walk down to the lake over land that is beautiful enough to make a Hollywood movie, and this is the path to the swimming area. We call it "the point" You will see mention of the path to the point in the guestbook. If you want to charcoal cook your dinner, there is a cooker on the front deck. For tenants, there is a cabin manager a telephone call away who is a school teacher with a master's degree who will help you as needed. She and her college age daughter prepare the cabin between tenants. Believe it or not, she has never been called! There is a cabin manual which seems to answer any questions tenants might have. My phone number is also posted in the cabin, and I have never been called.

Owner's Map of Freedom

I am a retired apartment complex owner and lawyer who always wanted to build a vacation home in a rural, secluded, perhaps mountainous area and on a lake. In 1997 I searched Nova Scotia and found nothing interesting. Then, looking in Maine the next year, I found this twelve year old modern cabin, already built, at the end of a very private road, deep in the woods, on six acres of fascinating land and bordering a lake. The search was over! I made extensive improvements to the cabin, had a metal roof added, built a new GE kitchen and new bathroom, added a power room, made king and queen beds and other furniture, screened in the front porch, built a lighted walkway to the lake, put in baseboard heat, added new Maytag washer and dryer, and have just added a four-five person hot tub.

    • Our week at Ledges Cottage July, 2009 We found it on the Internet, A house in Freedom, Maine, In acres of secluded woods, The last on Ledges Lane. We did not know six months ago, When planning out our stay, How perfect would this cabin be, To spend our time away. The drive up from the Empire State, Was hardly ours alone, But when we reached Vacationland, We found the tranquil zone. Each morning with our coffees, spent, Communing with the loons, The point, our precious hide-away, Their song, our only tunes. By kayak we explore the pond, Its islands, docks, and trees, We find a place to eat our lunch, Protected from the breeze. An eagle circles up above, His head and tail bright white, He spies a tasty morsel, and Descends, so fleet in flight. Back home we head to take a swim, Read books, and catch some sun, Then pour some wine and eat some cheese, And dinner's prep begun. The steak is seared atop the grill, Its center warm but red, The lobster in its brandied cream, Awaits its pasta bed. By candlelight we sit and talk, And savor every bite, The cabernet a perfect choice, For this delicious night. And then we go back down to gaze, At multitudes of stars, Some bright, some faint, some shooting, and A planet, maybe Mars. From time to time a fish will jump, And wake us from our trance, As side-by-side we sit and think, How fortunate our chance. To have each other and this spot, To block out all the noise, As work, and stress, and urban life, Give way to simple joys. David White and Alucia Scalzo New York, NY

    • Ledges cottage was simply perfect! The peace and quiet is what we needed and Freedom is fairly central to visiting other big towns and travel areas. We even spent a day in Acadia National Park! The cabin is perfectly laid out and provides many amenities. We cannot wait to return one day!

    • We couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our honeymoon. The cabin is awesome and the surroundings were too! The 2 hr. day trip to Acadia was well worth it. The whales were spectacular! We also ventured 10 min. away for a round of golf at Cedar Springs. The people were all friendly and our weather was great. Hope to be able to return again one day. Thanks for everything! Sherry & John Krial, Nazareth, PA
