Modern, Secluded Maine Cabin on Six Acres on 430 Acre Pond
Year Purchased: 1998
Why the Owner Chose Freedom
This location is so special. It is only about two and a half hours drive into Maine. It is very secluded. The cabin is at the end of a four tenths of a mile unpaved, well maintained, private road, so there is no traffic passing the cabin. The cabin is surrounded by six acres of beautiful, hilly land which form the entire tip of a peninsula which juts out into the lake. There are no near neighbors, AND THERE NEVER WILL BE ANY NEAR NEIGHBORS! I will never have to listen to someone else's television, dogs, children, parties or whatever. I can swim naked if I wish, which I normally do! The lake is beautiful. Rarely is there a motorboat. I hear just the birds, wind in the trees and the wonderful loons. It is really a natures paradise. It is only a twenty-five minute drive to Belfast, on the Penobscot Bay, when I need to get to a super market, or a variety of restaurants, or a hospital. Camden is also nearby, with its arty stuff. Waterville, about twenty five minutes to the west, is also available for more shopping.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin
Because of the natural environment of the cabin, I can leave my life in Pennsylvania back in Pennsylvania! I can "recharge my batteries" in a very peaceful, quiet, secluded place. I can relax in the new, private, hot tub, I have the pleasure of using a well appointed, completely new kitchen, with GE appliances, including a gas range and oven, bottom drawer refrigerator-freezer, disposal and dishwasher. The lower cabinets are illuminated, which makes it so easy to find things! I love the Corian counter tops. In the great room, with ceiling to the top of the cabin, I can relax on a LL Bean leather sofa with ottoman. I can enjoy a fire in the fireplace if it is chilly. In the spring and fall I usually have a fire. I eat mostly in the screened front porch which overlooks the woods and lake and which is a step away from the kitchen. The king and queen beds are custom made with storage drawers and have firm mattresses with a 1 and 1/2 inch foam "topper" and white down pillows. I have two kayaks, a single and a double, which go great on the lake. The eighty-five foot walkway to the lake has six lights under the railing so I can sit on the dock at 2:00 A.M. if I wish, or take a moonlight ride in the kayaks. Swimming is done in a different part of the lake from the dock. There is a short walk down to the lake over land that is beautiful enough to make a Hollywood movie, and this is the path to the swimming area. It is called "the point" You will see mention of the path to the point in the guest book. If you want to charcoal cook your dinner, there is a cooker on the front deck. For tenants, there is a cabin manager a telephone call away who is a school teacher who will help you as needed. She and her college age daughter prepare the cabin between tenants. Believe it or not, she has rarely been called! There is a cabin manual which seems to answer any questions tenants might have. My phone number is also posted in the cabin, and I have been called only once!
Cabin is at the end of a four tenths of a mile unpaved, winding road through the woods to the lake. Road is in excellent shape. Road ends at open gates at the top of the driveway to the cabin. Motion
Nine tenths of a mile down Mitchell Road from Route 137, turn left on to Ledges Lane and go four tenths of a mile to its end. Pass open driveway gates (illuminated by motion detectors at night) and go
Owner's Map of Freedom
I am a retired apartment complex owner and lawyer who always wanted to build a vacation home in a rural, secluded, perhaps mountainous area and on a lake. in Maine I found this twelve year old modern cabin, already built, at the end of a very private road, deep in the woods, on six acres of fascinating land which form the entire tip of a peninsula going into a lake. The search was over! I made extensive improvements to the cabin, had a metal roof added, built a new GE kitchen and new bathroom, added a powder room, made king and queen beds and other furniture, screened in the front porch, built a lighted walkway to the lake, put in baseboard heat, added new Maytag washer and dryer, and have just added a four person hot tub.

Our family really enjoyed our week-long stay at this rental property…it was such a peaceful retreat that it was hard to leave. Looking back, I wish we’d spent less time visiting other places in Maine and more time just ‘resting’ here. Noteworthy items to mention for those considering staying here: it’s in a very private location, and arriving at night it felt unusually remote but what a beautiful surprise it was in the daylight. The cabin was efficient in size but there was still plenty of room for the 4 of us and all our groceries, etc. The stairs to the loft was pretty steep yet solid and safe for all but the really young and really old. The master bed was pretty firm, but comfortable. The fireplace worked just fine, and was a treat on a cloudy, rainy day. The kayaks were a big hit with our kids (16, 13 yrs)…even if they have to be the ‘motor’. I could keep going on the various details that make the place really special (hot tub, grill, covered deck, lit decking down to the water, the path/deck to the ‘point’, the colorful mushrooms on the path, the excellent correspondence with the owner, etc) but in summary, the cabin was a high-quality, well-maintained, well-labeled, well-provisioned, and well-located getaway. If we can get back to Maine, we’ll be back here again in this cabin...and this time, we're gonna stay there the entire week!

My husband and I stayed here with our two sons, ages 11 & 13. The boys loved the fishing right off the point. We all enjoyed the kayaking. The loons and the eagle were delightful. This was our first trip to Maine, but the cabin setting was so peaceful, we just stayed put most of the week. This is the perfect place to unplug from the world and relax. The cabin itself is perfect -- looks like a page out of the LL Bean catalog! The hot tub is a wonderful treat at the end of the day and the stars at night are amazing -- definitely worth a trip down to the point in the dark! I am definitely recommending this cabin to friends and family interested in going to Maine. I wish it were closer, because we would love to go back!

There are no words to describe this place. You have to see it for yourself. It is just wonderful!! It is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. Can hear the loons every day on the lake and see the eagle fly over. We will definitely go back again.

We had a great week on Ledges Lane, particularly enjoying the Hot Tub on those chilly evenings! The cabin was scrupulously clean and obviously has been built and maintained lovingly. Thank you Paul for sharing it with us.

The rental information was not accurate; the whole experience was far better than the description would have you believe. Anyone who rates this rental below 5 should be sentenced to eleven months in isolation in the South Bronx. If I were to build a vacation home for myself, this would be my model. When we were there, it was as if a dear friend lent us his special retreat. You don’t need to make do about anything; it is all there - all the gadgets, all the tools, everything for a posh owner who intends to live there year around. If you have a question about anything, the answer is right there in the painstaking information notebooks. Grossed out by putting kitchen waste in the woods instead of the disposal? Never! That’s the way my mother (nature) intended it. We made lots of woods creatures and bugs happy. My late wife always loved loons, and said she would come back as one. She fulfilled her promise, and we visited with her and her family of five who lived happily on the pond. Things to do and visit? Of course. It’s all up to you future visitors. Enjoy!

Ahhhhhhh....I am actually a bit teary reading everyone else's reviews-they bring back awesome memories. We chose this spot because our 21 yr old son is a nature junkie, and wanted to spend time at Acadia National Park. I had the nicest phone conversation with Paul, and subsequent helpful e mails, and our stay exceeded our expectations, even tho we took off for Maine with the highest of hopes. We watched the sunset at the Point time and again, swam, kayaked, fished, hot tubbed, met some nice neighbors, brought home great lobsters and steamers...we played games, read, did crosswords, sat on the dock and basked in the sun in the mornings...I can't even put it all in here! We loved Acadia, and also found other great outdoorsy places to visit. We did see a bald eagle, but the loons were our favorite!! Our ages are 82, 50, 50, 21 and 15-and we all loved every minute!...Well, Dad didn't LOVE the deerflies while out for his runs-but who runs on vacation?! Thank you for the wonderful TV free vacation in your beautiful home!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a place to get away from it all. The owner was very friendly, organized and helpful, and the business part of our stay was handled very easily. The cabin was everything we expected and more. The photos are very accurate, but photos just aren't sufficient to show how really nice the cabin and area are. The cabin was very secluded and quiet, tucked away on a beautiful, peaceful lake. (It may be a pond in Maine, but in Oklahoma, we'd call it a lake!) The cabin was extremely neat and clean and well-stocked with everything we needed. Our daughter enjoyed staying in the loft and having her own space up there. We kayaked and soaked in the hot tub, grilled in the evenings, and had some time to really relax. We did day trips along the coast to Freeport, Camden, Belfast and up to Acadia and Bar Harbor. We took a sailing excursion on the Schooner Olad out of Camden and would highly recommend them for anyone looking to get out on the water. As suggested by the owner, we ate at Young's Lobster Pound in Belfast, and it was great, too. We shared lots of wonderful family time here and my only regret is that we live too far away to come back anytime soon. Paul, thank you and your family so much for sharing your piece of paradise with us. We took away lots of great memories!

8/22/09 Paul and Family, thank you for letting us enjoy this wonderful cabin. We enjoyed all of the amenities of the cabin and had a wonderful time exploring the area - the view from Mt. Battie and Cadillac Mtn. were amazing. Also had fun identifying all the birds on the pond - the loons and bald eagle were a special treat. Thanks again! Sharon and Mike Dennehy, Qincy, MA

8/15/09 10 best things: Loons, eagles, kayaking, watching sunsets, reading The Secret Life of Lobsters, alone time, NO phones or TV's, relaxing, tubbing, eating some kind of local fish every day. Enjoyed every minute. The Sagers, Poughquaq, NY
Owner response:Actually, there are three telephones, one cordless and two corded. I loved his seeing a lack of a TV as a positive quality. Why go to a nature's paradise and drag in all the noise and stress of TV!
