After a long-distance engagement and our wedding in the plains of Kansas, we found our way to this precious cabin. We arrived just after sunset, and as we approached the open, lighted gate, we knew that we were coming into our first home together. As I looked over at my wife, she had tears coming down her cheeks. I would use any word I could to convey what a special moment it was (and is) for us, and "special" is about all I can find. We loved everything about the cabin and about the time we spent there. All of the spaces were just the right size, without being too large. You could be in a different part of the interior or exterior of the cabin and still feel connected to one another. The interior was pleasantly and simply decorated, preserving a cabin feel without going overboard. The placement of the cabin itself could not have been more perfect for us. We found it at the end of a well-kept gravel road, tucked into the granite and trees at the edge of the pond. The cabin and its surrounding woods are such a peaceful place. Without going into a too-detailed description of our entire honeymoon...we cooked many wonderful meals together, baked breads, baked cookies, grilled out, listened to music, danced, drew and colored pictures, starry-sky hot-tubbed, collected fallen leaves and birch bark, watched the trees change, watched movies, made fires, had breakfasts on the dock, pushed out into the pond in kayaks, watched a bald eagle fly about the pond, made trips to Belfast, Camden, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, and enjoyed each other the whole beautiful while. The cabin was stocked with almost any nonperishable item you might need. From kitchen equipment and seasonings to tools to laundry machines to candles to life-vests to...well, nearly everything to be helpful for a week's life at the cabin--they had it. If we had any questions at all, Monica, the manager, was just a phone-call away. She was helpful and warm over the phone, and it was a comfort to know she was available if we needed her. Our entire experience made it evident to us that so much care and consideration has been poured into this place over the years it has existed. We would like to say thank you to Paul and his family for how they have shared the overflow of their life with us through the cabin. We continually talk about wanting to come back for an anniversary, and dream about what it would be like to return when we have children. Our stay at the cabin was so very special--we loved it.

My wife and I were looking for a quiet, scenic place to get away for a delayed honeymoon. The listing for this cabin seemed to have everything we were searching for and we were not disappointed when we arrived. We had one of our most peaceful experiences ever here. The cabin was extremely cozy and well stocked. The owner was very accommodating and pleasant. The drive to Belfast and Camden were short enough to take day trips. We'd highly recommend staying here.

The perfect place to get away from it all. Very secluded, heavily wooded location on beautiful large lake ("pond" in Maine-speak). Impeccably clean, incredibly well-equipped, the cabin reflects the love that Paul, the owner, has for this retreat as well as the respect he has for the people who rent from him. The cabin's central location makes it ideal for exploring the Maine Coast from Portland to Acadia National Park and explore it we did. Everything is less than a 2 hour drive away for easy day trips. The cabin and its location is simply perfect. My wife and I could not have been more pleased!

This property is a very special place, due not only to it's beauty and privacy, but the very unique and indefinable feeling of it. The cabin itself is warm and cozy, with a luxurious rustic vibe, and although not terribly large, it feels spacious, with wonderful nooks and cubbyholes, so that you never feel the least bit crowded. Everything you need is there. I cooked delicious complicated meals, and never lacked for a piece of kitchen equipment. (something I have rarely found in rental properties) I particularly liked the loft space (which you get to by a ladder). That’s where I slept. The bed was extremely comfortable, and I had the feeling I was sleeping in the treetops! There is a hot tub on the side patio, and soaking in it at night, looking up at the stars was a magical feeling. And there are all kinds of little conveniences and luxuries that the owner made sure to have for his guests- A CD/cassette player, lights around the hot tub, really comfy bedding, matching wine glasses, books of various topics, etc. You get the feeling that he really cares about his guests, and the fact that they’re paying is secondary. And that’s just the house! The lake is incredibly beautiful, and very private. I saw perhaps 5 people go by in kayaks the entire time I was there. You get to the swimming area down this wonderful little fairy forest path- full of ferns and moss. At the end of it is a sort of rock island that juts into the lake and you swim right off the rocks. I brought a lounge chair down there every day and spent the day swimming, napping and gazing out over the water in zen-like silence. It was wonderfully rejuvenating. The lake water is a perfect temperature. Cool enough to be refreshing, but warm enough stay in for extended periods. There are also 2 Kayaks for guests to use. It was great fun paddling around the lake. Whenever I saw loons, I would pull my paddle out of the water so as not to alarm them, and just drift, watching them go about their business. That was something really special that I’d never experienced before. There are very few homes on the lake, and most of them are barely visible. You are really surrounded by, and part of, the natural world here. I spent one morning at a nearby flea market, and one day in Bar Harbor. Interesting day trips are definitely possible, but the cabin and lake are so wonderful, you’ll find you don't want to leave. I can wholeheartedly recommend this cabin for a peaceful, nature-filled vacation.

My husband and I stayed here for the week of our 10th wedding anniversary. Our GPS got us to the cabin without any difficulty, even though it felt amazingly remote. We were amazed to hear loons and other birds in the evening, and we even saw an eagle on the lake. We enjoyed sitting out on the rocky outcropping to watch the sunset. It was truly magical. The hot-tub on the side deck was amazing - it was great to be in the hot-tub at night and watch the stars.... it would be an amazing place to watch a meteor shower if you timed it right! The cabin was perfect for us as a couple, and we could definately imagine bringing our son on a future trip. We enjoyed the local restaurant - Hilltop? Hillside? There are directions to the restaurant at the cabin, in the welcome notebook. We used the cabin as a home base while we explored Maine - we especially enjoyed Stonington, Acadia National Park, Belfast and many points along the way. Stonington has a ferry that takes you out to a remote area of Acadia National Park only accessable by boat - totally worth the effort to get there - even better if you get an early start and pack a lunch ... maybe someday we will return to do this! Fort Knox and the observatory bridge are also spectacular sights to take in. It was a totally relaxing week, and a great place to get away from everything. And yet, there was civilization close enough to enjoy if something was needed. We definately hope to return someday, it was a lovely week. The cabin was perfect for us, would be very suitable for a family, especially if you want an unplugged week of family games, hiking and touring around. If you are thinking about a place in Maine with a hot tub and a quiet location - this is THE SPOT to pick!

Everything that could be said about how great it is to be here on Ledges Lane has been said, so there is little I can elaborate on perfection. However, I did find ample time to express myself in another format with alittle help from my best half; A Memory Found On Sandy Pond I remember a time so long ago As a ‘lil sprout fresh off the vine; Standing small on Pike’s Peak, Colorado, no fonder memories of mine. One more chance to look down upon a sky, Timbers tempt me with no demand; Faraway from Sandy Pond, where all vie, Now! Venture to sense all one can. Shimmering stars through stately trees, a tease to new fond memories, I land. Look down upon a sky beneath the trees Where feathered echoes soothe first sense; Easily taking the moment to breathe, While lesser lees, a shore relents. Something so simple, younger tears I leave; for the ‘lil sprout, too well, I know, I find this memory, this place to believe, so near a time, so long ago. Thanks again Paul, we needed this

What a wonderful place to get away from it all! Charming log cabin in a secluded setting lived up to it's description and other reviews. We enjoyed watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee out on the point, morning walks & kayaking on the pond daily, afternoon naps, reading, relaxing in the hot tub, and trips to Belfast and Camden. We also enjoyed watching the loons and were even visited by the bald eagle during one of our kayaking expeditions. He flew across the cove, landed in a tree, and was gracious enough to wait for us to paddle over to where he was, sitting there for an additonal 2 to 3 minutes allowing us to admire him. Property is truly perfect in every way. Exactly what I was looking for....more than I could possibly imagine. Cabin is beautifully designed and built to the highest standards. All the modern conveniences while retaining the true feel of a Maine lake cabin. Location is beyond description....private and peaceful wooded location surrounded by a serene lake. Owner has thought of everything you could possibly desire in a rental property. Enjoy!

We drove up from NYC and after an 8 hour drive it was so nice to relax almost immediately after we arrived at the cabin. Everything was clean, in good working order, and exactly as described by the owner. The only worry we had was what to eat for dinner. The pond is beautiful. We saw an eagle and several loons during our stay there. It's very quiet at the end of the peninsula. If you're coming from a big city, the quietness might freak you out at first but you get used to it very quickly. The hot tub is clean and comfortable, we were in it every day. During our time up in Maine we visited Acadia Park and rode our bikes on the carriage roads. We also visited the Windsor Fair in Windsor Maine. I would highly recommend this rental property to anyone looking for a quiet restful vacation away from the distractions of modern life.

Midway between Belfast on the coast and Waterville inland, this cabin was exactly as described and pictured on VRBO. The cabin was beautiful, the location was incredible--everything we could possibly need was at our disposal--from kitchen utensils to the pristine pond! Owner Paul and Monica (the cabin manager) were always available for any questions. We had the most relaxing vacation ever, and even our 15 year-old son, who spent the week without Internet access (no gaming, no phone service, etc,) can't wait to go back. Although Freedom is not a "destination" town, Belfast is a great walking community, including all that you could want or need. We loved our time here and would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and family! Incredible!!

                          Year Purchased: 1998

About the owner: I am a retired apartment complex owner and lawyer who always wanted to build a vacation home in a rural, secluded, perhaps mountainous area and on a lake. In Maine I found this twelve year old modern cabin, already built, at the end of a very private road, deep in the woods, on six acres of fascinating land which form the entire tip of a peninsula going into a lake. The search was over! I made extensive improvements to the cabin, had a metal roof added, built a new GE kitchen and new bathroom, added a powder room, made king and queen beds and other furniture, screened in the front porch, built a lighted walkway to the lake and a new dock, put in baseboard heat, added a new Maytag washer and dryer, and have just added a four person hot tub.

                          Why the Owner Chose Freedom:
This location is so special. It is only about two and a half hours drive into Maine. It is very secluded. The cabin is at the end of a four tenths of a mile unpaved, well maintained, private road, so there is no traffic passing the cabin. The cabin is surrounded by six acres of beautiful, forested, hilly land which form the entire tip of a peninsula which juts out into the lake. There are no near neighbors, AND THERE NEVER WILL BE ANY NEAR NEIGHBORS! I will never have to listen to some other person's television, dogs, children, parties or whatever. I can swim naked if I wish, which I normally do! The lake is beautiful. Rarely is there a motorboat. I hear just the birds, wind in the trees and the wonderful loons. It is really a nature's paradise. It is only a twenty-five minute drive to Belfast, on the Penobscot Bay, when I need to get to a super market, or a variety of restaurants, or a hospital. Camden is also nearby, with its arty stuff. Waterville, about twenty five minutes to the west, is also available for more shopping.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Because of the natural environment of the cabin, I can leave my life in Pennsylvania back in Pennsylvania! I can 'recharge my batteries' in a very peaceful, quiet, secluded place. I can relax in the new, private, hot tub, I have the pleasure of using a well appointed, completely new kitchen, with GE appliances, including a gas range and oven, bottom drawer refrigerator-freezer, disposal and dishwasher. The lower cabinets are illuminated, which makes it so easy to find things! I love the Corian counter tops. In the Great Room, with a ceiling to the top of the cabin, I can relax on a LL Bean leather sofa with ottoman. I can enjoy a fire in the fireplace if it is chilly. In the spring and fall I usually have a fire. I eat mostly in the screened front porch which overlooks the woods and lake and which is a step away from the kitchen. The king and queen beds are custom made with storage drawers and have firm mattresses with a 1 and 1/2 inch foam 'topper' and white down pillows. I have two kayaks, a single and a double, which go great on the lake. The eighty-five foot walkway to the lake has six lights under the railing so I can sit on the dock at 2:00 A.M. if I wish, or take a moonlight ride in the kayaks. Swimming is done in a different part of the lake from the dock. There is a short walk down to the lake over land that is beautiful enough to make a Hollywood movie, and this is the path to the swimming area. It is called 'the point' You will see mention of the path to the point in the guest book. If you want to charcoal cook your dinner, there is a cooker on the front deck. For tenants, there is a cabin manager a telephone call away who will help you as needed. She prepares the cabin between tenants. Believe it or not, she has rarely been called! There is a cabin manual which seems to answer any questions tenants might have. My phone number is also posted in the cabin, and I have been called only once!
