Great affordable stay for couples in north Kauai. You'll feel at home rather than feeling like your at some generic hotel/motel. We stayed 7 days and 8 nights and this location proved central to all the activities we wanted to do. The bathroom is really modern with jacuzzi (great after hiking all day) and luxurious with its double shower. The room has a small fridge so you can save even more cash by shopping for food supplies and using the shared kitchen to prepare what you like. The on-site laundry was a plus also (we didn't have to pack dirty clothes on the trip home!). The owner, Iris, is friendly and easy-going, so you can't go wrong here.

Great value for the room (we even got a small price break because the jacuzzi tub jets were not working!). We stayed 8 days / 7 nights, and it felt just like home (as opposed to being in the middle of a big hotel). The listing description of the rental is very accurate -- Free WIFI, washer/dryer (dryer was broken so Iris the owner offered to dry our clothes in her personal dryer), full kitchen, and in the room, the bathroom is the selling point here! Huge shower w/ two shower heads, huge jacuzzi tub, very modern look and feel. Recommended!

We stayed here for our honeymoon in May, and it was awesome! We were a little leary of renting a vacation rental instead of a hotel, but in the end we were so thrilled we stayed here instead. It was a great location on the North shore. The room was clean, and WAY nicer than a hotel at the same price! The host was excellant to work with and very informative when we needed help with restaurants, beaches etc. The rooms were quiet as well, never heard the other renters. Would definately recommend this place, and hope to visit here again!

Great place to stay for a great price, great location. Casual elegance, everything you need. Not just a room...you have access to full kitchen with dining area, neat upstairs living/family common area with neat tropical view. Free WIFI throughout. Beach toys included. Clean, recent construction-well thought out design for renting. Close to everything you want to see and experience on the North Shore. Walk to downtown Kilauea. Also close to "secret beach" and lighthouse.

We had came from Waikiki to Kauai and we were very pleased with the room we had compared to where we just were (Oahu). Our suite was upstairs which was great for us, it has more light and it's just great to not have people above you. It did get a little warm like what others have written but there was a fan that iris gave us which helped. We had a huge bathroom with a jetted tub, and a double shower head, it was nice, including a king bed. Iris was great she did our laundry and was very helpful. The only down fall was that it would have been great if their laundry machine worked in the house so we can do our own laundry. It would have been nice to have extra blankets and towels in the room since there is so much space and we didn't like to bother iris. The house was built very nicely, although the house needs a dip cleaning throughout, especially the kitchen which unfortunately we did not use because of this, and that is the main reason we wanted to stay somewhere with a kitchen. All in all the room itself made up for it, and thanks to iris.

this guest house was pretty much exactly what we were looking for while staying in kauai. first of all, the location is perfect. the north shore had so much of what were looking for in activities - great hikes, beautiful swimable beaches and good food. the town of kilauea is an awesome locals town and from the house you can easily walk to the "town" part with restaurants, markets and such. it's also a short drive to hanalei where there's a lot going on. the house itself was comfortable and clean, nice big communal kitchen, easy parking, comfy beds, and extra fans in case of humid nights. we were pretty much out doing stuff the whole time, so didn't spend all that much time at the house, but it was great to come back to after a busy day in the sun, and is in an actual neighborhood, not at an impersonal resort hotel with a bunch of tourists. would absolutely stay there again when i go back!

I don't understand the reviews of others. We stayed in two of the rooms for the duration of stay. I won't go into the cockroach infestation, because that's a given and everyone know that that's normal in Kauai. However, the first room, downstairs, was not very clean. Beds were made with clean sheets, the jacuzzi was rinsed, and counter top wiped clean. That was the extent of cleanliness. Just about every storage areas (cabinets and drawers) were so filthy. Looked as if they weren't used or cleaned in years. They were full of roach droppings, cobwebs, and dead insects caught in the webs. The room has a back door, but it would not close because of severe warpage. I had to muscle it closed with everything I had. The coffee maker in the room was filthy with scale build up and dust and other foreign matters. We couldn't/wouldn't use it. The washing machine was broken before we even arrived, which we were counting on to use. The jacuzzi jets were not functioning. On the last night of that room, I was awaken in the middle of the night by what I thought was a roach tickling my leg. When I removed the cover, I immediately jumped to the sight of a 6 inch centipede. I caught it in a water bottle. Ok, maybe that's normal too...I don't know. On to upstairs. That room was cleaner (not by much, though) and the jacuzzi worked, but the ceiling fan made an audible noise and the coffee maker was filthy. The fridge was leaking water onto the floor--melting frost buildup. The rooms didn't have Air conditioning. You'll need to open all of the windows, because you know how hot and humid it gets in Kauai. Other than that, the stay was perfect! Oh, BTW, I let the centipede go in the yard across the street, so it may just come back to visit you.
Owner response:After 3 years of being in business and renting to hundreds of visitors, eventually we ran into someone like this…. The suites are professionally cleaned by cleaning service. I guess not good enough for this guest. Jacuzzi in downstairs works fine. After he complained I moved him upstairs to try and make him happy. He was informed that the upstairs suite’s Jacuzzi motor does not work and he was fine with that. We don’t have AC- never said we did. However each suite has ceiling fan, plus if needed there are extra fans in the suites. Yes, the dryer was broken at that time, but we bought new a new set. But during the stay I offered to have them do the laundry @ our home. Yes, if you leave the lanai door open the flying cockroaches can fly in- it is Hawaii. We have screens on all windows to try and avoid that… The house gets professionally fumigated regularly, not even sure the centipede story was true. At rare times they do get in the house, they die right away. I’m sorry his stay was so bad, even though it took him a year before submitting this bad review.

We stayed in 6 different places in our 3 weeks on the Big Island and Kauai and this was our favorite! Iris and her husband were extremely friendly and helpful. Iris even did a load of laundry for me at her home (next door) when the washer in the rental house broke down! We stayed in an upstairs suite. The king bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was huge and amazing. The mini-fridge in the room was an added bonus, in addition to the full fridge in the kitchen downstairs. If I could, I would give this place 4.5 stars. Our only complaint was that it was quite warm in our suite, especially the few times we were there in the middle of the day, even with the ceiling fan on and all the windows open. The rest of the house, including the common area upstairs, was much cooler, so I'm not sure if it was only our suite or if both upstairs suites would be hot like this, but we really felt that either a window-fan to help pull out the hot air, or a window air conditioning unit, would have made the place perfect, as our unit never fully cooled down even at night. We did notice a little road noise as well, but not enough to keep us up at night. The price is incredible. You get a WAY nicer room than you'd get in a hotel, for a fraction of the price!

We stayed here for three nights. The room was very nice but the bathroom was spectacular! There is a very deep jacuzzi that we loved using, especially after a sea sickness episode. There is a full size kitchen and washer/dryer. The Kilauea location is very convenient to the beach and to downtown Kilauea. Although we didnt meet Iris in person (our schedules just didnt match up) she was very helpful and always available via phone. We loved it there!!

My husband, small son and I rented the luxury suite and loved it! We came to Kauai'i on vacation, but also to experience daily life so for us it worked perfectly to stay in this guest house. The listing description of the suite is very accurate. The place was super clean and it had everything we needed. Public transportation is right around the corner and easy to use; we took it to the lighthouse, various beaches and different areas and I took it to Hanalei to catch yoga classes--the studios offer great tourist deals so one can keep up a regular practice. However, there is a great yoga studio just up the street from the house where I also practiced. Iris and her husband were also great hosts. They were very helpful and quick to respond to any of our needs. I highly recommend this house to all travelers who desire luxury without the impersonal feeling of a hotel and with the comfort of being in a home where you can relax and cook your own meals or try your hand at some of the local dishes. You really can't find a better place!

The pluses of this vacation home are as follows: Very good location for getting around the island, pretty central to everything, about half hour ride from airport, ten minute ride to the beaches, close to many of the shops/stores in the area, we did a lot of walking and there were several boutiques and stores within walking distance. The owners were extremely friendly, made us feel like we were a part of their family, gave us directions to many of the things we wanted to see and do, were extremely accomodating when we advised them we would not be checking in until almost eleven pm, handled all the money transactions via our credit card and the phone without any hassles, left us beautiful flowers in the room, and best of all the price was phenomenal. We had been looking for a very reasonable place to stay, and we were staying an odd number of days (eight days instead of a week) and they gave us a fantastic rate for the eight days. It was far less than the hotel that we had originally booked, and much nicer than a hotel room because we had a fridge in our room, a gorgeous jacuzzi bath which was HUGE, and a beautiful shower. We also had full use of the kitchen facilities and the kitchen was kept clean at all times, even though it was shared by the other guests staying in the house. The negatives: Not close to the beach if you want to walk to the beach (we drove and it was fine for us but if you want to wake up and walk to the beach then this is not the place to stay) However again, the rate reflects this, it was a very very reasonably priced home and had it been on the beach or walking distance to the beach it would have cost five times as much to stay there per night. We were very happy with the location!! The other negative is that because there is no central AC in the home, we had to rely on fans and having the windows open to be cool at night. The room was very cool, AC is NOT NEEDED, however with the windows open it was rather noisy at night, we could hear cars on the road passing by, and we could hear a lot of noise from the house behind us at night, which did keep us awake on more than one occasion. Overall, we would definitely stay here again, as the owners are very pleasant, the location was perfect for us to get around the island, the room was very clean, and THE PRICE WAS RIGHT. FAR BETTER THAN A HOTEL AND MUCH MORE PERSONABLE!!! Iris was extremely nice in allowing us to book at the last minute, and our very late evening check in.

We had a wonderful relaxing time for 2 weeks at this property. Its in a great location, close to lovely beaches in the North of Kauai. The rooms are lovely with a big luxurious private bathroom. We had been travelling for some time and choose this property for a break from being 'on the road' and we were not disappointed. The area is quiet, the owners friendly and welcoming and the facilities are great. It was great to be able to have use of a communal kitchen, we made use of the local farmers markets for fresh produce. There also tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge in the rooms which were great. We would recommend this property for couples, particularly if you want to stay somewhere quiet and private, far enough away from any tourist areas. We would also recommend hiring a car to make things easier, although we did make use of the local buses for some of the time. The apartment is a great base for exploring the island, we would not hesitate to stay at this property again and highly recommend it.

Iris and her husband were very friendly and helpful, i had problems getting a rental car, so they ran us into town the next morning. The provided tips, and other help when we needed it. The neighborhood is quiet, the location is pretty much 10 or 15 mins from everything. Rooms were clean, Jacuzzi was fun, was a great Honeymoon. If you are nervous about dealing with someone private, or you know nothing about Kauai, these are great people work with. They will bend over backwards to make your stay comfortable!

My husband and I stayed for about 10 days last September. This was third trip to Hawaii, first time to Kauai. By far, this was the BEST place we have ever stayed. The house was beautiful, clean, new, and private. Very convenient to driving up to Hanalei or south to Coconut Coast shopping area, but "hidden" enough away from crowds and tourists. We really loved the neighborhood and intimacy of staying in Kilaeua, and we've recommended staying here to many friends. Can't say enough great things about the house or Iris - she was very helpful and friendly. We will definately stay here next time we come back!

Great value, nice people......Had a great stay in an excellent quality constructed/outfitted house. Very good kitchen, so stayed out of restauarants alot. Liked the nearness to Anini Beach which is alot safer (when the surf is up elsewhere) for safe swimming for my 80 year old mother (or normal swimmers). Also the neighbourhood pub/bistro and fishmarket restaurant were very closeby when the sun went down and did not want to drive after cocktails or happy hours. Hanalei is only 15 minutes away and it is fantastic to surreal especially at the pier late afternoon to sunset. .....very nearby Botanical Gardens are good. Recommend this guest house for travellers wanting to NOT be in a big or impersonal hotel. Very easy on the pocket. PS....You need a car and can get that at Island Cars quite cheaply near the airport.

We stayed in this suite in April 2009 and we were very comfortable. The suite is nearly in new condition and the owner Iris was very accommodating. Iris was very hospitable and I truly enjoyed meeting her and her family. I would very much recommend this suite for your stay. The price that Iris is offering, is well worth your money and much more comfortable than any hotel or motel room can offer you. She has every detail planned out with her thoughtfulness. From towels, shampoo, even beautiful local Hawaiian flowers that greeted us upon our arrival. Talk about going out of your way, she even thought enough to bring us a DVD player with DVDs to entertain my young children. I have no complaints whatsoever! Just in general a five star experience!

Malulani is located in a nice residential neighborhood, an easy walk or drive to shopping and restaurants in Kilauea. The rooms are clean, new, comfortable, and the jacuzzi perfect after a long hike to Hanakapi'ai Falls. Kilauea is in a great spot to explore the many fine beaches and sights on the North Shore. The communal kitchen (shared among the four rooms) might not be to everybody's taste, but we appreciated meeting other guests and getting tips about things to do. Mahulani was easy to find even after a long plane trip from Alaska, and it's an easy drive (20 minute drive) from Lihue. For visitors who don't need a place right on the beach, but a short drive away, it's the perfect base to explore the North Shore. You don't need an overpriced Princeville condo.
