Somtara is the name for this vacation rental. Somtara has been judged by many repeat island visitors as the best and nicest place they have stayed on the island. Pictures alone do not do it justice. Please follow the link to our primary website to review guest comments, see more pictures, including interior pictures, and to make your reservations.
Somtara is a true lakehome. It offers direct beach access and is not across the road as some properties are. Also, unlike many island properties, the beach at Somtara is easily accessible. The views and sounds of Lake Superior abound at Somtara. From inside, the views and sounds are wonderful the entire length of this single level, ranch style home. From the family room, the kitchen, the dining room, and the living room, Lake Superior is right out the window. Further, there is a screened porch off the master bedroom and a large deck out front overlooking the lake.
Children are allowed and they love the outdoors, beach, dock and firepit, but the home is rather well appointed and more appropriate for adults. Still, the guest room is setup with two twin beds.

Great clean home with a great view of the lake. A good adult getaway for quiet relaxation. There is a state park nearby for hiking and a small museum in town. A few restaurants that close early, at least in early June. There are not many opportunities for purchasing provisions, so come prepared with food and outdoor gear.Recommended for: Age 55+.

Thanks for sharing your lovely island retreat with us. Very comfortable and love the island breezes. The fire pit was perfect! And having a wood supply right there - we loved it.! Thanks again for accomodating our schedule. We will be back!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Very quiet with so many places to choose from for sitting and relaxing. Morning coffee in the bright family room with a view of the lake, get a little sun on the dock, rest on the beach, move up to the deck with a cold drink, when the flies start bugging you you can move onto the screened porch, and at night -when the wind is a little nippy - you can sit in the living room with a nice fire in the fireplace. We enjoyed our stay very much.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

Our Alaskan cruise scheduled for this week was canceled due to an illness in the family. This “substitute” vacation was wonderful. The weather was perfect and the house so comfortable and beautiful. We hope to be back in many seasons! Favorite moments: • Making smores and a beach fire in the evening • Morning coffee and yoga on the pier • Settlers of Catan around the dining table • Building sand castles on the beach • Jumping off the cliffs at Big Bay Park • Watching our son catch a northern pike from a canoe in the lagoon • Every day, swimming in the clear, cool lake!! P.S. Love the book selection! Home of a physicist perhaps?Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We’ve been coming to the Island for over 20 years now, but this is our first stay at Somtara. Hopefully it won’t be our last! The house and its location are just perfect. We loved being right on the lake, listening to the sound of the waves and seagulls. And the full moon shining down on the lake a few nights ago was simply divine! What luck to be here to witness that beautiful sight! Thank you for providing such a wonderful escape. Best Wishes,Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

It was our first trip here to the island this summer. It was also our first trip the two of us had ever taken together. Every moment was breath taking and full of positive energy. The sights, the sounds, the smell from the lake brought us to true moments of inner peace. As we sat by the fire at night and the full moon hung in the air lighting up the night sky and our hearts we came to realize that the feelings we shared for one another were deeper than ever imagined. With the dull roar of Minneapolis far away we seized our chance to fall in love. No better place in the world then sitting on Somtara’s beach, the sky ever so bright, the fire crackling, the water gently splashing against the rocks, and the cool sand between our toes, to say I love you, and know she really felt it too.Did you find this review helpful? Tom and Sara, I think Lucia shared many of our sentiments ~ she and her sister Anna, 11, had fun playing and exploring from the moment they set foot in your wonderful home. My husband Bill and I were able to relax and enjoy carefree days here as the kids were easily entertained with the rocks, the house, the porch, the lake, etc. We enjoyed the Town Park Beach, like you suggested. We found every perfect skipping rock on that shore! We canoed and waded in the lake. When the flies got the best of us, we headed to the pool at the Inn in town. That was easy living, complete with some cold gin and tonics. It was my first trip to the island and I hope not my last. Thank you!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Wow! I loved this place. I loved counting all the boat stuff. You have more than 30 boats! Amazing! Loved the living room was so beautiful. I liked playing in the lake and trying to skip rocks. I also liked playing restaurant on the porch, The Beach Bungalow. Love that saying! Thanks so much for letting us stay here. Also loved going in to town and taking the boat ride. P.S. Also liked roasting smoresDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We have stayed at several places on Madeline Island but I have to say that this location has everything you could possibly want in an island rental. Location is perfect and private. The views from the house and deck are just as nice as from the beach and dock. Accommodations are top notch too...there's nothing better than falling asleep in a comfy bed to the sound of Lake Superior waves. Plus, you can cook on the beach in the firepit, use the grill just off deck, or simply the stove (cause it did rain one day). You may find cheaper places to stay on the island but it would be hard to find one with everything this one offers. It's worth it!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

Hi, Tom, we enjoyed our 2 night stay mostly for the view, the fire pit, the serenity… the house was exactly as we expected except for the lack of water/water pressure. When one person was running a bath in the master bath (no shower head in the master bath) another could not take a shower in the hall bath because NO water came out of the shower head (I think the kitchen sink wouldn't work either). Unfortunately this really did make our stay a bit lack luster… scheduling showers/baths was not easy because we had a full itinerary. I hope you fix this problem!!!! I'm sure your return visitors would appreciate it! (A shower head in the master bath might be appreciated by most also). I did report this problem to Debby via a voice message in case the water pump is simply not working correctly.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3
