I have to say that this was one of the best vacations we have taken. Catherine was wonderful and went out of her way to make our time here the BEST! The cottage was amazing. The views from the cottage and the privacy were just what we wanted. The drive from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay reminded us of the road to Hana. If you turn by Colombo's drink stand you can have a short cut to the beaches. We loved the outside shower. The meal the first night that Catherine made for us was wonderful. You won't find this kind of personal care anywhere else! The cottage has several stairs that you have to go down and you park at the top of the hill so you need to have good walking shoes. We would highly recommend House of Open Arms Cottage for your next vacation.

Cottage of our dreams
Cottage of our dreams
The House of Open Arms cottage was the perfect romantic retreat for our vacation. Catherine and her family are gracious and kind and made us feel welcome and comfortable during our stay. Our journey to the cottage was adventurous and when we arrived, it exceeded our expectations..beautiful gardens, friendly critters, perfect weather and panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea/Ocean. It was serene and completely private, dappled with lovingly created pottery and artwork and the continuous soothing sound of the ocean. The island is an oasis of white sand beaches perfect for snorkeling and grand paths for hiking and historical exploration. We felt our cottage was in a perfect location for a local meal or cocktail, or to branch out and make day trips. We fell in love with A House of Open Arms and dream of returning someday.

We had a wonderful time staying in the cottage for our 20th anniversary. As you can see from the pictures the place is beautiful and very private. I'm not sure that a more gracious or informative host could be found on VRBO. Catherine was there to answer any questions we had but was very respectful of our privacy. Looking forward to getting back some day.

This was our (my husband, 14-year-old son and I) first trip to USVI. We chose A House of Open Arms purely from web search; the overall experience of our stay at the villa was exceptional. This villa was a paradise onto itself. It is close to Coral Bay, but far enough from other properties to afford privacy. We watched the sunrise every AM, sipping our morning coffee and watching the bananaquits (sugar birds) eat their morning breakfast. We spent the mornings exploring St. John and would return to the villa in the early afternoon for a cooling splash in the pool and an afternoon nap on the veranda. The villa was tastefully decorated (with some beautiful artwork from our host and other local artists) and well-stocked with essentials. Best of all, our host Catherine was delightful and ever-helpful, yet unobtrusive. She made a delicious meal for us the first night; we were exhausted from a day of travel so it was a welcome treat to not have to drive somewhere to eat that first night. The collection of books, CD's and games in the villa all made for a relaxing, memorable experience as well. If we have the good fortune to return to St. John, we will definitely book another stay with A House of Open Arms.

We stayed at A House of Open Arms near Coral Bay on St John the first week of July. I did quite a bit of research to find our “perfect” St John rental and I’m convinced that I could not have been more fortunate to find this wonderful (and exceedingly affordable) gem.The location just outside Coral Bay is superb. Check out the website to see the incredible views from the villa. The entire complex was designed by a very talented architect who normally only works on much larger projects on the island. The interior of the one bedroom villa, while small, is well-designed to take full advantage of the hillside location. There is also a small honeymoon cottage just a few steps down from the villa which can be rented separately or together with the villa. Both are owned and run by a local artist, Catherine Perry, whose hospitality and attention to detail made for a very enjoyable experience. She was always available to help ensure we were getting the most from our stay on St John but was never intrusive. Catherine has thoughtfully provided many items that we didn’t expect but which we certainly appreciated such as beautiful wine glasses, china plates, a great mattress on the bed, Tupperware containers, vacuum wine bottle caps, high quality shampoo and shower gel and beach towels & coolers for beach use. She is also having a small pool installed just outside the villa so be sure to check to see if that has been completed. The pool will make it even more fantastic to stay there.

Why the Owner Chose Coral Bay:
I purchased this land in 2003 to begin a dream of being a working artist and Innkeeper on St. John. I create unique lighting for many private homes on St. John. My guests are welcome to visit my art website of www.artofopenarms.com or visit my studio during their stay here!
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
A House of Open Arms is on the electric grid to provide A/C but is also solar-powered and purified rainwater-fed. It sits amid lush tropical gardens, a 180 degree view of the sea. Cooling easterly breezes come up the hill making the need for a/c very optional. Hawks, kestrels, bananaquits, Lesser Antilles bull finches, Puerto Rican bull finches, and magnificent frigates float above with the crashing sea below. This is truly a nature lover's paradise. It is made all the sweeter by the knowledge much of the electricity and all of the water used on the property are collected from the sun and sky, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
