Location: Cascade, South Central, Colorado, USA (At foot of Pikes Peak Hiway; 5 minutes from Manitou Springs)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 9-11)
Keywords: House
Base your Colorado Christmas in the heart of historic Cascade, at the foot of the Pikes Peak Highway, a mile from the Santa's Workshop at the North Pole. Cut a tree from the National Forest or pick one from the Boy Scouts. Decorate the house and enjoy some hot cider in front of the fireplace.
From the late nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries, this comfortable Victorian served as the region's Ranger Station. Today it is rejuvenated and furnished to reflect its past as a gathering place for locals and visitors eager to hike, hunt and fish among the Pikes Peak's legendary forested slopes. Your stay at the Ranger Station will open the door to an earlier time when folks came up Ute Pass to relax among the mountain spruce and ponderosa, away from the heat of the "lowlands" and bustle of city life.
The Station's spacious kitchen welcomes you back to a real connection with great-grandma, sitting at the table over coffee or tea, chatting and keeping hands busy helping with dinner chores. The dining table invites your family to eat the old-fashioned way--together, enjoying meals with the honest hunger that fresh air and exercise bring on. Food never tasted so good, nor sleep so deep and sweet, as in the embrace of this generous old house. In the livingroom, the 100+ year-old fireplace still works, reminding us that summer is only one of Colorado’s mountain moods.
The Station is completely furnished with everything you need to be comfortable on your vacation. The kitchen is set up with refrigerator, oven-stove, microwave, dishes, flatware, toaster, etc, etc. We've tried to think of all that a good cook needs; there's a barbecue grill and picnic table outside too. Inside, you can relax with a good book or watch a movie from satellite, a DVD or VHS, or, if you must, access your email with hi-speed wireless.
At last, you're at your Colorado home-away-from-home, furnished and decorated to awaken in you that feeling described by Gonzo’s song in "The Muppet Movie":
This looks familiar, vaguely familiar,
Almost unreal, yet, it's too soon to feel yet;
So close to home, and yet so far away--
I’m going to go back there someday...
These entries from the Guestbook speak for themselves:
"What a wonderful cozy cottage – Everything was so comfortable for us. So perfect for exploring this incredible area – centrally located to explore the local sites: Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds, Cliff Dwellings and Pikes Peak – also close enough for day trips to the Arkansas River rafting, Royal Gorge and Red Rocks concerts. Our stayed was blessed and we thank you for being humble hosts." Lise & Dave L.
“We really enjoyed the cabin. It has a lot of charm. The location is great. Thank you for all your hard work.” Jodie & John Day, New Orleans, LA
"Our family was truly blessed to have chanced upon this wonderful cottage! Our son’s Air Force Academy Graduation was even more special by the comfort and unbelievable hospitality and amenities so graciously shared by Happy Trails. The location was ideal for sightseeing yet close enough to the Academy for the week’s events. The memories for the week will include the family barbeques, nightly card games and the beautiful view our family was able to share. Thank you" Mark & Sue R
"We truly enjoyed our stay. Being at a home with everything here already was truly a blessing. Knowing that we all share the hope and love of Jesus was a special perk. The house was comfy, private, a great relaxation "base of operations" for our family vacation. Staying here put a real nice bow on the top. In Him, Joel, for all the Miles Family"
"Our final night in Colorado - it's been quite a trip! We attended a family wedding, went white-water rafting, and saw some sights we didn't get to see ten years ago when we were here last. It was a comfort to come back to this cozy cottage - all the comforts of home! Thank you for your hospitality - for calling and checking up on us - most likely we will return again. Until then, a warm thankyou from the Walter Family for providing us a safe, lovely place to rest."
"We have enjoyed staying at your home. It was very comfortable and you have provided all the things we needed. This area is beautiful and we have enjoyed all the sights. It was wonderful to explore during the day and catch up with our friends at night. We were excited to see a bear wandering past the house one morning. We also enjoyed the baby birds in the bird house on the porch. Thanks again for providing such a nice place to stay." Steve, Marian, Ruth, Rhonda, Dennis & Marie from England, Minnesota & Tennessee
"The house was a great relaxing respite for us during our stay. We are here to have a family vacation while Justin reports to the USAFA Prep School - a bittersweet combination as our first leaves the family nest. We've had a great time seeing the Garden of the Gods, the Academy, Molly Kathleen Mine, Arkansas River white-water rafting, fishing at 11-Mile Reservoir and visiting the hot springs in Buena Vista. We have been busy! We had a great time and have many memories of this week... We'll be back!" The Smith's, Rose's & Walter's
"Thank you so much! We had such a great time!! We had our whole family here and had an AMAZING time! The house was beautiful. We loved all the wildlife. Thanks again" The Fletchers, Skagens, Valentines & Kasseths
"Thank you, we had a lovely time here. The house is wonderful and has a great location. We spent many mornings on the porch reading and enjoying the mountains." The Giers - Overland Park, KS
"Happy Trails" to you ... until we meet again. The Fagues loved your cozy and adorable home. We all would stay here again. Thank you and God bless!" Fague Family - Petaluma, CA

My family and I stayed during 3 weeks I had for Air Force training in Colorado Springs. It was a wonderful experience, with lots of good memories we'll keep with us for a long time. The owners were very responsive and a pleasure to communicate with, though we didn't have occasion to see them during our 3 week stay. The house was very comfortable for our family of six. The value was outstanding relative to comparable hotel accomodations. We were very pleased with the location. It was close to almost everything we wanted to see, and though the same could be said for the towns of Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City, I felt the surroundings in the little town of Cascade were much nicer. We enjoyed visits to Pike's Peak, Cave of the Winds, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Training Center, the Dinosaur Resource Center, Focus on the Family, the Air Force Academy, and Cripple Creek. The Cascade library and post office were both within walking distance, and we made use of both under temporary arrangements. We have already recommended this to other families as a great vacation spot. Thanks to whole crew at Happy Trails!

What a nice place to use as our home base for our Colorado vacation. The owners thought of everything. The Ranger Station was clean and comfortable and close to all the attractions in the Colorado Springs area. We did a lot of sight seeing and it was so nice to have a comfortable house to come back and relax it. Thanks for everything! We've already recommended your house to someone thinking of taking a CO vacation!

Shortly after our arrival at the Ranger Station, we received a phone call from the host asking if there was anything we needed. Our concerns were met quickly and with care. Even before our arrival, all my emails were met with caring responses and answers to all my questions and concerns. I felt the cabin had More space than the pictures represented and our family of 10 was quite comfortable in the cabin and sleeping adequate for all when using air mattresses supplied. The cool mountain nights, made up for the lack of AC, and we found it adequate to use the fans provided for cooling. We enjoyed the porch for viewing the mountains and visiting in the evenings. The grill was handy for our smores one night as well. The kitchen was well stocked and everything was neat and clean, ready for our use. I enjoyed the added touches of decorations, reading material and videos also stocked in the house for our use. Of course, the telephone, wireless internet and cable TV, added a modern feel to our stay. Being right on Highway 24, the Ranger Station is ideal for going both north to Woodland Park, or South back to Manitou Springs or Colorado Springs, or any other places along the highway. We enjoyed a hike on the trails at Green Mountain Falls a short drive from the Ranger Station. We also went to the Iron Springs Melodrama in Manitou Springs and Seven Falls in Colorado Springs. We enjoyed spending some time shopping in down town Manitou Springs and the Garden of the Gods Trading Post. We enjoyed great pizza at Savelli's Pizza in Manitou Springs and the wonderful food at Cracker Barrel in Colorado Springs. We hope to return some day, and bring our married son and his family, since they could stay in the Caretaker's Cottage right next door or the Olde Post for a reduced rate and be close and yet have some privacy. I would recommend this property at this location for a great home away from home. Thanks to the hosts for great service and a place to stay reasonably priced for a large family.

Our family enjoyed 4 nights in July at the Cascade Ranger Station. The house is both quaint and modern in the fact that it has wi-fi and cable TV. The kitchen is fully equipped, which allowed us to cook meals and then sit around the dinner table and enjoy each other's company. We loved sitting on the porch each morning and evening reading and having our quiet times. The location is perfect for day trips to Pikes Peak, Seven Falls and Garden of the Gods, etc.We definitely recommend the Ranger Station and really hope to come back again soon.

After walking into the house for the first time, it felt like someone was living there. We had everything we needed to feel right at home. We had a view of nature that we could never grow tired of. The hospitality shown, the deers, the mountains, and the quiet made for a peaceful time at the Ranger Station.

We spent a week at the Ranger Station with our friends, John & Debbie Blank and their son, John. Our time there was truly a blessing! The cottage was perfect for us, very comfortable and just charming! We had everything we needed and more. The location was perfect for our day activities during the week, and then we spent most evenings relaxing, cooking our dinners, and playing games with our friends. The aspens were incredible! Everything was just beautiful. I would go back in a heartbeat! God bless our gracious hosts for their wonderful hospitality. We hope to return for a visit another time. Thank you, again, for a wonderful visit. Pete & Susan Sifford

We are from Massachusetts and this was our first Colorado Vacation. The Ranger Station was an awesome place to use for base. It was close to everything in the Pikes Peak Region, and even close enough to other Colorado attractions. The porch was a great place to sit in the morning with a tea and good book. The humming birds were amazing. Keep the feeder filled for a chance to see them each day. Our family of 4 adults had ample room to move around and never felt on top of each other. Everyone slept well in the very comfortable bedrooms. though close to Rt 24, it felt a million miles away!
