Casa Amistad (Friendship House) is located in San Miguel de Allende high in the mountains of central Mexico about 4 hours drive northwest of Mexico City or 1 and a half hours from Leon. San Miguel was declared a national historical monument in the 1920s because Mexico’s independence struggle from Spain began here and thus its wonderful colonial character is preserved. It is an internationally known center for the arts and has attracted visitors from around the world for generations. The climate is mild all year round at 6400 feet above sea level and it has 330 days of sunshine per year permitting its 80,000 inhabitants to enjoy outside activities, numerous festivals, and a relaxed lifestyle. We built Casa Amistad in 2007 because of our love for the old city, the climate, the lively modern and traditional arts communities, the long-term cooperative relationship between local and foreign residents, the wonderful people and their celebratory lifestyle, the markets and food, and the nearby opportunities for adventure travel.
Amistad is in the city district of San Rafael about 20 minutes walk from the Jardin (Garden Park) in the city’s historic center. San Rafael is a traditional working class Mexican neighborhood where you will find small grocery stores and businesses, lots of children playing on the cobblestone streets, and Mexican neighbors going about the daily tasks of living.
Casa Amistad has 2 main elements - the main house and an attached apartment (casita) with a private entrance and terrace. The main house ground floor includes a full kitchen, dining area, and a large living room with fireplace. The whole area is called the Great Room and is attached to the first floor patio and garden with its large traditional water fountain. A bedroom with twin beds is off the dining area and looks onto the garden through 2 large windows and a glass door. It has its own bathroom and shower tiled in indigo blue.
The 2nd floor is reached via the main circular or garden stairs and has 2 bedrooms, full bathroom, plus a large railed terrace overlooking the garden and the city. The Tea Room has a double bed, large armoire, fireplace, and excellent views of the city lights at night. The bathroom is a few steps down the main hall. The Master bedroom includes a twin and double bed, fireplace, walk-in closet and attached bathroom. Both rooms open onto the terrace that is partially covered with a terracotta tile roof to provide shade during the summer.
A 2nd floor stairway leads to a large roof terrace and a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding countryside. Dawn and sunset provide marvelous colors in the clear air. The roof terrace is walled, partially covered with a terracotta tile roof, and is a great place to enjoy morning coffee, evening wine, pitch a tent, sleep under the stars, or set up a small pool for children.
A casita (apartment) with a private entrance is attached to the main house at the front. It includes a full kitchen/dining/living area on the ground floor, a bedroom with its own bathroom on the 2nd floor, and a small private terrace area with a beautiful view of San Miguel on the roof. The floors are reached with a spiral staircase that runs from kitchen to roof terrace. This stairway is typical of San Miguel homes and is not recommended for those who have any difficulty walking. |
