San Miguel de Allende is a charming colonial town, a national historic landmark with an international community of artists, writers, dancers, musicians. SMD keep's it's Heritage on the Jardin (Town Square) with nightly promenades and morning coffee! Casa de los Colibris is about one mile to the neo-Gothic Parroquia (Parish Church), Casa de Allende Museum, GREAT SHOPPING, SUPER RESTAURANTS. Theaters, 2nd largest library of English books, art and language schools, Artesanias, and the Plaza del Toros! The Instituto de Allende and La Fabrica Aurora, as well as the Warren Hardy Spanish School are easily reached. Walking is possible, the bus is handy and taxis are plentiful.
Day trips include local natural hot springs and the cities of Guanajuato, Dolores Hidlago and Queretaro, the area known at the Bajio, the cradle of Mexico's independence. San Miguel is an art center with the highest ratio of art galleries per capita of any city in Mexico, also called the "Montmartre of Mexico" and compares to the art of Santa Fe, USA.
International music festivals occur throughout the year. The first two weeks of August the annual Chamber Music Festival is held at the Bellas Artes. Mexican Independence Day falls on September 16 and Fiesta de San Miguel is Sept. 29 -- when it's party time with dancing, parades, fireworks, flags, music and dancing on at the Jardin.
San Miguel's natural beauty is found at 6300 ft. with birds, gardens, a Botanical Garden and great hiking. Third Sunday's monthly, the Sociedad Audubon conducts a bird walk for the public. Weekly visits to local "showcase" homes leave from the Library Sunday mornings and take hundreds of visitors to see these lovely homes -- proceeds go to local children's organizations. |
