For a real back-in-time experience, stay at Olde Surber Station, a 19th-century restored mountain farmhouse on scenic Craig Creek. Located on 90 acres in the midst of the Jefferson National Forest in Botetourt County, Virginia, Olde Surber Station offers remoteness, lots of wildlife, a pristine mountain river great for swimming, tubing, or canoeing and loaded with fish, miles of hiking trails just for you, and an abandoned rail bed for biking.

In the early 20th century a steam train traveled through the area, hauling iron ore, passengers, mail, and other goods. Surber was a whistle stop station on the old rail line, hence the name Olde Surber Station.

Furnishings are mostly from the early 1900s, including a working 1930s wood cookstove in the large, eat-in kitchen. (There is also a vintage electric stove from the 1940s.)

Four spacious bedrooms provide sleeping space for 10 people. The downstairs master bedroom, with a comfy antique iron double bed, is the lower floor of the original 1860s log cabin and is decorated in primitive country style. It contains a gas log fireplace.

The upstairs bedroom of the original log house features an alcove queen bed complete with bed curtains. A second upstairs bedroom, completely paneled from floor to ceiling in original wood planking, has two double beds.

The third upstairs bedroom has a double bed. The upstairs full bath has a stand-up shower, and the downstairs full bath has a old-time slipper tub, great for a relaxing soak. There is also a cute half-bath under the stairway.

The house also has a comfortable parlor (living room) with a second gas-log fireplace and a DVD/VCR and CD player. The dining room/library seats 8 comfortably. Outside in the old wellhouse is a unique outdoor shower with hot and cold water. (The original functioning outhouse is also available, for those who REALLY want the "back in time" experience!)

Several bicycles, two Grumman canoes, and numerous inner tubes for floating are available for use. Fire pits provide a place for stargazing and marshmallow roasting, and singing silly songs.

A retired couple live in a second house on the property and help to caretake the place. They are available if anything is needed. Other neighbors are a half-mile away. (The owners live down the old rail bed about a quarter mile.) Craig Creek access is about 150 yards from the house. The owners' creek camp, about 1/4 mile down the railroad bed, is also available for day use, with a beach, lawn area, shelter and firepit.

The owners have intended for Olde Surber Station to provide a rustic, remote place for folks to get back to nature. This is not a place for those looking for lots of modern conveniences, like air-conditioning, dishwashers and satellite TV! But if you're looking for wilderness, wildlife, clean air and water, beautiful mountain views, and LOTS of peace and quiet, this might be your place.

Kids and well-behaved pets are welcome. Even though the house is filled with antiques, this is a house to be lived in, not a place where you’re afraid to put your feet up!

Christmas 2011

Carol & Jack, A toasty Christmas at Surber Station: puzzles were puzzled, walks were walked, food was eaten, books were read and bee-bees were shot. We watched The Karate Kid (Peter for the first time) and our dogs, Dolly and Ivan, found some deer close by. We opened stockings by the gas fire--one present at a time, and some of us piloted a tiny helicopter. Surber Station is always a joy. Merry Christmas!

Thank you for having us in such a cozy environment! We enjoyed the great outdoors and love the history of the house. We had Thanksgiving dinner with relatives from Hickory, NC at Wilderness Adventure. My son and husband went hunting and came home to the couch!! Target shooting was great fun. We hope to return and enjoy your front porch swing again.

Going back in time

Guest: Gwen T. (-)
Date of Stay: 09/25/11 Review Submitted: 01/26/12

The four of us had such a great time going back in time at Olde Surber Station. It took us a little bit to adjust to the lack of TV and computer, but we agreed we needed this and it made our stay even more relaxing. We loved being surrounded by the history and antiques and understand your pride in this restoration. We also loved the cabin and the opportunity to go tubing down Craig Creek. May all who stay find as much enjoyment as we have. God Bless You.

A wonderful relaxing week

Guest: Cathie T. (-)
Date of Stay: 08/23/11 Review Submitted: 01/26/12

Dear Carol and Jack, We all had a wonderful, relaxing week filled with fun and much laughter. My five grandchildren ages 7, 7, 6, 5 and 4 all want to come back again. They loved the creek, a campfire at night, and dinner in your beautiful dining room by candlelight. Bernie brought us a bag of peaches he had just picked which were a big hit with the children. Your home is inviting and beautiful and I leave with the hope of returning soon. Lots of happy memories.

A relaxing visit

Guest: Aubrey and Carol H. (-)
Date of Stay: 08/14/11 Review Submitted: 01/26/12

Thank you for such a relaxing visit! This home is so beautiful, comfortable, and inviting. It was the perfect place for all 13 of us (and 2 furry friends) to get together and enjoy each other's company. We all loved playing in the creek by the cabin, tubing, and playing outside. We had 5 children with us from age 6 months to 4 years old--they all had a fantastic time. We learned how to skip rocks on the creek and make yummy s'mores at the campfire. We hope to visit again soon!

Dear Carol, Jack, Jeanie, Bernie, We love this place!! Thank you so much for sharing Surber Station with us. We enjoyed spending time with all of you in the parlor, on the porch, in the yard and in the creek. Each year we plan a special trip with our grandboys, and we decided this week was the best trip yet (7 years). Many Blessings on you all.

Thank you for sharing Surber Station!

Guest: Alan & Lori M., Fredericksburg, VA (-)

Having read about it and having watched your videos on the web, it was much as I expected. We fished, canoed, read, tubed down the suspension bridge, grilled, played in the water, had s'mores 'round the firepit, "chilled", relaxed, even napped on the back porch swing! The girls loved the sleeping alcove and our daughter wants to return next summer. Yesterday was our 27th anniversary and we enjoyed spending it here very much. Thank you again for the opportunity! Blessings!
