For a real back-in-time experience, stay at Olde Surber Station, a 19th-century restored mountain farmhouse on scenic Craig Creek. Located on 90 acres in the midst of the Jefferson National Forest in Botetourt County, Virginia, Olde Surber Station offers remoteness, lots of wildlife, a pristine mountain river great for swimming, tubing, or canoeing and loaded with fish, miles of hiking trails just for you, and an abandoned rail bed for biking.

In the early 20th century a steam train traveled through the area, hauling iron ore, passengers, mail, and other goods. Surber was a whistle stop station on the old rail line, hence the name Olde Surber Station.

Furnishings are mostly from the early 1900s, including a working 1930s wood cookstove in the large, eat-in kitchen. (There is also a vintage electric stove from the 1940s.)

Four spacious bedrooms provide sleeping space for 10 people. The downstairs master bedroom, with a comfy antique iron double bed, is the lower floor of the original 1860s log cabin and is decorated in primitive country style. It contains a gas log fireplace.

The upstairs bedroom of the original log house features an alcove queen bed complete with bed curtains. A second upstairs bedroom, completely paneled from floor to ceiling in original wood planking, has two double beds.

The third upstairs bedroom has a double bed. The upstairs full bath has a stand-up shower, and the downstairs full bath has a old-time slipper tub, great for a relaxing soak. There is also a cute half-bath under the stairway.

The house also has a comfortable parlor (living room) with a second gas-log fireplace and a DVD/VCR and CD player. The dining room/library seats 8 comfortably. Outside is a spacious back yard for cornhole games or horseshoes. (The original functioning outhouse is also available, for those who REALLY want the 'back in time' experience!)

Several bicycles, kid kayak, two Grumman canoes, and numerous inner tubes for floating are available for use. Fire pits provide a place for stargazing and marshmallow roasting, and singing silly songs.

A retired couple live in a second house on the property and help to caretake the place. They are available if anything is needed. Other neighbors are a half-mile away. (The owners live down the old rail bed about a quarter mile.) Craig Creek access is about 150 yards from the house. The owners' creek camp, about 1/4 mile down the railroad bed, is also available for day use, with a beach, lawn area, shelter and firepit.

The owners have intended for Olde Surber Station to provide a rustic, remote place for folks to get back to nature. This is not a place for those looking for lots of modern conveniences, like dishwashers and satellite TV! But if you're looking for wilderness, wildlife, clean air and water, beautiful mountain views, and LOTS of peace and quiet, this might be your place. (Note that window air-conditioning units are installed in the summer for your comfort.)

Kids and well-behaved pets are welcome. Even though the house is filled with antiques, this is a house to be lived in, not a place where you’re afraid to put your feet up!

Thank you so much for opening up your home to us. We really enjoyed our stay. It was an amazing time to reflect on God's beautiful creation. My family has stayed in many cabins (VA and NC) and yours will forever be a gem in our hearts. Thank you so much for the hospitality! May God continue to bless you and your family.

Wow! What a wonderfully, splendid time our family has had this week! Thank you! Everything was wonderful! I personally loved "the creek fords" because as a child we would drive through the "three creeks" to visit friends. The canoes, tubing and "creeking' were terrific! The cabin on Craig Creek was a neat bonus! Thank you for sharing your history with us! Blessings!

Dear new friends, I guess we are the "new guests" Keith Surber spoke of in the previous entry, and I can attest to the fact that we had a most blessed time this past week. We were having a reunion of sorts with old friends from South Carolina (where we live) who now live in Ohio. Olde Surber Station is an historic treasure, but it is definitely not a museum. It is still full of life, surrounded by the majesty and beauty of unspoilt creation. This has been a most enjoyable week the nourished body, mind and soul. We're so thankful to Jack and Carol for preserving and then sharing with others, this magnificent place. We plan to make an annual event of coming here and even while we are away we will carry a lot of Olde Surber Station in our hearts and minds. Blessings always.

Thank you so much for letting us come here and get away from it all. Tubing down the creek was the best. We are so looking forward to returning to do it again. Bernie, I can't thank you enough for coming to the cabin and jumping the car when the battery went dead. Hope your wife is doing well. We look forward to meeting her as well as Jack when we return. PS I think Owin loved swimming in the creek more than we did!

We couldn't have asked for a better few days away from our busy lives in Northern VA and Charlotte, NC! We were looking for somewhere to get away and introduce our 22 month old son to the water and this was perfect! Great fishing (at Craig Creek and Roaring Run), fun times on the kayak, big breakfasts we don't have time to make at home, good movies and lots of relaxing. Thank you so much for sharing this special place! We had a great time visiting with Bernie and Jeannie and look forward to meeting Carol and Jack next time! We really love the house too--it is so cozy! We also really appreciated being disconnected: no internet, no cell phones, no cable TV--really getting away, relaxing and enjoying each other's company! Thank you, thank you!

This is truly a unique vacation spot. We were hoping to unwind and enjoy the outdoors & indoors and THIS IS THE PLACE! Lovely & distinctive furnishings but not the kind of place where you are afraid to touch anything. Homey, comfortable, and the history is the key ingredient. The CREEK--clear, cool water, tubing, fishing, skipping rocks, swimming. The campfire and smores. The ice-cream social & church service @ King Memorial were especially memorable. The Craig County Boys country music was great! The camp at the creek was convenient for a picnic on the screened porch. If a refreshing, wholesome outdoor vacation is what you're looking for, try Olde Surber Station. Many, many thanks to you all for having the vision and ability to make this available. It is a blessing and we hope God keeps you in His love as you continue to steward this place. With grateful hearts, Carol and Ed J. Clifton Forge, VA

We absolutely LOVED Olde Surber Station and can't wait to go back! Here's what we were looking for on our vacation (all of which we found!): -- introducing our 22 month old son to the outdoors - woods, creeks and fishing -- close to fishing waters (several nearby private access points to Craig's Creek, which is extremely clean, shallow and warm. . .lots of fish, too; about 20 minutes from trout waters where we caught a few brook trout) -- a quiet, peaceful place for my husband and I to enjoy with my brother and his girlfriend Our son had so much fun - we brought a little bucket with us, a very temporary home for all the creatures we caught in the creek! Crayfish, creek bugs, minnows and small bream. We found frogs, too! The water was shallow and warm enough that he spent hours playing with his bucket and picking up creek rocks. The cabin also had a kayak that we used to float him up and down the creek. The adults caught many fish in Craig's Creek on both fly rods and a kid's fishing rod that we brought for my son. Olde Surber Station is on a gorgeous piece of property. The house is very cozy. Beds were comfortable, linens were clean, and the kitchen was well stocked with all the pots, dishes and utensils we needed. In four days, we never went out to eat once and enjoyed making and sharing meals that we don't have time to make at home! When we did need more groceries, it was a pretty 20 minute drive to New Castle to a well-stocked IGA grocery store. In the evenings, we enjoyed movies from their large selection, played card games and dominoes. We also thoroughly enjoyed meeting Bernie and Jeanie, the caretakers of the property that live next door - they are absolute sweethearts! We can't wait to go back. We didn't even get to check out the many nearby walking trails this time!

Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing.
