The historical heart of the Black Patch, Wallonia was and is one of the great tobacco growing communities of south central Kentucky. The Writer's House was built by Doctor Haydon in 1903 from site-sawn lumber using a Sears Catalog Plan.
The house is documented in Bill Cunningham's book, On Bended Knee, as the site where the leader of the Tobacco Rebellion was treated for head wounds suffered as he led his band of Night Riders back from the great Warehouse Raid of Hopkinsville in 1907.
The Writer's House was photographed by Nancy Nye for the Summerhouse project in 2005. This is an old house with three gas fireplaces and a private, secluded, feeling with a north-facing orientation. The main room offers ample room to paint with northern light. There is a simple farmer's cafe across the street which serves three great meals a day from 5AM to 6PM.
There is a deck facing south and a 4x8ft. concrete tub in the backyard overlooking the pond. Our climate is mild all year around and the spring and fall are especially pretty.
The Farmersmarket is in Cadiz with organic produce etc, and the Mennonites have an abundance of fresh fruits , vagetables and eggs available, at biking distance. |
