Beautiful Cabin in Decatur Northwest, an exclusive community located on 600 acres in the San Juan Islands that stretches over two miles of shorefront and beaches. An idyllic setting, free of commercial establishments where guests can fish in the pond, go crabbing in the cove, feed the deer, collect shells on the two sandy beaches, visit the chickens and horses at the barn, play tennis, hike or just relax with a book in front of a warm fire and an amazing view.

Cabin is luxuriously yet comfortably furnished. Kitchen and baths were remodeled in 2008 to a very high standard by an interior designer. Top quality beds and linens for maximum comfort, sub zero refrigerator, and custom concrete countertops. First bedroom: queen bed; second bedroom: two twin beds; third bedroom: one double + single bunk + single trundle. VIEW FROM EVERY ROOM!

Once on the island, visitors either walk, bike or use a golf cart, as there are only a few motorized vehicles permitted on the property. No need to deal with the lines and hassles of the public San Juan Island Ferry system as there is convenient and quick access to the Island via a private ferry that departs twice a day from Anacortes. Travel time from Anacortes: 45 minutes.

Below are a few comments from recent renters cut and pasted from their emails:
“I wanted to thank you for the stay at your cabin in Decatur - it was amazing. We all had such a good time crabbing, fishing, walking around the island, etc. - what a great place! And your cabin was perfect. The room situation worked out perfectly for us - and with 4 adults and 5 kids, that is saying a lot! The finishings/furnishings were all beautiful, we felt really well taken care of. I think I can speak for everyone in saying that we all hope to visit again one day, it was really a unique experience that we'll all remember for a long time. Thank you for everything.”

“We loved the cabin. It was really well set up, and as you promised, the linens were heavenly and the soft sheets were better than the Westin :) The cabin was clean and everything felt fresh. We really liked the kitchen. It was great to work with. My husband likes to bake and we made fresh bread almost every day. and yes- I did gain a pound or two despite hiking up that hill 6 times a day!"

"I loved the cloth napkins, soft towels, soak-worthy bathtub, washer/dryer and reading materials. I also liked that there was not much clutter and it was easy to keep clean.”

“We had a wonderful vacation at Decatur NW! Your cabin is lovely, and we enjoyed walking, biking, tennis, rowing, and collecting shells and eggs. Everything was clean and orderly. We would love to visit again.”

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

We are a family of 5 with three boys. Although we currently live in Sydney Australia, the beautiful Northwest will always be home.

Why the Owner Chose Decatur Island

We first became enchanted with Decatur Northwest after staying at a colleague's property. We didn't intend to purchase a vacation home, but we fell in love with this unique place that is ideal for both adults and children. We love the freedom it provides for our children. They are able to bike, hike and explore on their own. We also found a very friendly community. It's a place where we feel like we're stepping back in time.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

My husband likes to fish and go crabbing. Some of the best Dungeness crab in the world is right off Decatur Island. I like to play tennis, hike, cook, read and visit with friends. On summer evenings, there's often a group of kids who put together an impromptu "capture the flag" game. The kids love to swim in the pond, play basketball and tennis and ride their bikes all over the island. The favorite activity of our three year old is to visit the chickens and horses at the barn.

Gorgeous and Comfortable Island Home

We have nothing but good things to say about our stay in this lovely home. We loved the clean lines and classy decor of this very comfortable home. From the hard wood floors to the beautiful stone work in the bathrooms, the decor fits the northwest settting perfectly without being cluttered or fussy. The cabin was very clean and the kitchen well appointed. There was even an expresso maker and coffee grinder ! As noted in other reviews, the linens and towels were top rate and we all loved the comfortable beds. We are used to much more primitive conditions in island cabins so this was more like staying at a quality resort. The owner was very communicative and helpful as well. This is our 8th year at Decatur Northwest and this was one of the nicest places we have visited. The island iteslf has limitless things to do. My kids played tennis, went fishing and hiking, played basketball and soccer and went exploring. We played countless board games and allowed the kids to use the available WiFi just to get their homework done. Other than that we were "unplugged" so we could enjoy this beautiful and relaxing place !

Paradise Found

We left grey skies in Seattle, and found beautiful sunny weather and absolute tranquility at Decatur Northwest. The house was filled with charm, immaculately clean, and it had all the comforts of home. By day, we enjoyed both the nearby lake and ocean beach. The children in our group were captivated by the community farm animals which included sheep, chickens, and a playful goat named Domino. The sunsets and majestic evening views from the wrap around deck were simply amazing! At night, we retreated indoors to a warm fire in the comfortable living room. This is a spectacular property that I can highly recommend.

We escaped a rainy weather forecast for Seattle and found the perfect get a way for us (parents with boys age 11,9 and 3 and friends from Germany, parents with boy age 9). Not only was the weather so much better than on the mainland, the cabin was very well equipped as mentioned by the other guests. I only want to add that the owners are sharing an amazing supply of board games, building toys, books and music. Don't even think of bringing your own!!!The island is such a safe place. Where do you find a house which doesn't have to be locked by a key? We hiked, explored the island (our kids were fascinated by the old cars and boats left to themselves), visited the pirate ship, went rowing, fishing, beach combing, geocaching, playing tennis, basketball, horseshoe.... Our meals were complimented by fresh herbs from the community garden (chives, parsley, mint and sage). The easter egg hunt which was organized by the always friendly and so helpful caretaker Kathy was a special highlight for our kids. We will be back. That's for sure!!!!

Perfect! We stayed in this house for a week last summer (2008). We often rent vacation homes through VRBO and I can say that this was the best VRBO rental experience we have ever had. We stayed with another family and young kids. First, Decatur Northwest is an amazing place for children. There are no cars, so parents can let their children run free without worry. There's so many activities with tennis, shell collecting, visiting the barn animals etc. The house is beautiful. Very clean, uncluttered, almost like a suite in a 5 star hotel. The bed linens were so comfortable that we asked the owners where they bought them and plan to get the same for our home. The views are spectacular. The caretaker of the community is so helpful and everyone we met was very friendly. I give this my highest recommendation.

My family and I (two young kids included) have stayed at this lovely cabin several times. It is very comfortable, with a master bedroom downstairs and 2 bedrooms for kids upstairs, able to accommodate 5 kids in the beds, plus quite a few more on the floor, as kids love to do. The cabin is in the woods with a gorgeous view of the water. The kids run wild around the cabin, as the spouse and I relax on the wood deck. With no cars and very few people, the worries for their safety are minimal. The kitchen is fully equipped and capable of producing gourmet meals (now if only my cooking matched the potential of the kitchen). The decor is comfortably rustic with surprising touches of luxury in the bedding, towels, espresso maker, etc. Fun hiking for all levels, beach combing, a community garden, tennis courts, a pond with rowboats available and swimming for those able to handle the chill. The pond is also the home of the legendary Decatur Sea Monster (some say a myth, but who knows!) A friendly and responsive on-island manager. Wildlife. Boating. And most of all, enjoying the sound of quiet woods. This is the quintessential "cabin in the woods". Without having to rough it.

Decatur is a truly magical place in the incomparable San Juan Islands and this cabin is just terrific. Comfortable and roomy but with a great cozy feel. My daughter and I had a quiet winter weekend there that was incredibly peaceful and beautiful. In the summer there is so much to do and kids can really run free. Not to be missed.

This may be one of the most unique and charming places I've ever been. Decatur's solitude combined with it's quiet combination of gentleman farmer and Pacific NW woodsie atmospheres is idyllic. The cabin has a great floorplan for one or many--just the right size--and the views are stupendous. I loved it before the remodel, so can only imagine how wonderful it is now. It's a very special place.

Decatur Northwest is a wonderful place to vacation, especially with children. Very peaceful and relaxing for adults, with lots of activities for the kids. We stayed for a weekend at this cabin and really enjoyed it. The term "cabin" is an understatement, as this is a nice family home. It's spacious and comfortable. We stayed there before the recent remodel, so it's even nicer now!
