Victor Colorado, just 5 miles from the casinos of Cripple Creek, is an authentic, undiscovered and unblemished historical gem. The entire downtown is a National Historic District untouched by the hands of progress. With its rich gold mining history and many great architectural gems, Victor offers a unique and authentic view of the Colorado mountain mining town. Find out the secret that artists and a cult following of locals already know: If you miss it now, in a few years it may be too late (it will have already happened). Victor should not be missed on a tour through the state.
Originally built in 1899, The Pikes Peak Power Station was lovingly rehabilitated in 2006 into 3 modern loft units. The Southwest unit, featured as a vacation rental on this site, is a one bedroom loft with 18' wood plank ceilings and exposed steel beams. It is filled with light both from the original 12' tall arch-top double hung windows and from the roof top light well (the one-time electrical busway coupola) where one can access a roof deck with fabulous views of the history that surrounds you.
To the North, take in the balcony at the gold coin club, a 2 story building styled on the New York Athletic club that once housed a swimming pool and where Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech to the local miners.
To the East is the Miners Union Hall, where gun shots can still be read in the facade from the labor riot that took place there. These events helped to shape the modern structure of the labor unions.
To the west is the ruin of the Gold Coin mine. The hoist house, whose impressive brick arch still remains, once stood 4 stories tall and had stained glass windows causing one miner to resign because he "cared not to work in a church"
To the South you can see Victor Avenue, the main street in town, with numerous remarkable buildings whose slow patina beckons the explorer and history buff alike. Still further below you can take in the Sangre De Cristo mountain range.
The unit designed by architect Jim Smith has minimal modern styling and features european styled cabinets with stone countertops, stainless steel appliances, stained concrete floors, a cable rail system, and a reveal wall base detail. All detailing is done in an effort to quietly bring out the expansive quality of of the original structure and the fantastic wood plank ceilings and steel beams that make staying there a truly unique experience. |
