La Esmeralda is a 100 year old wood railroad house, fully restored with hardwood floors, high ceilings, central air and heat with two bedrooms and one bath with a ball claw tub. The house is professionally decorated with antique and modern furniture, art, 36 inch flat screen TV, very comfortable beds, books, music, and small film library. The screened in porch is furnished with a table and chairs and a great glider to view the spectactular sunrises. There is a stone BBQ and fire pit, an outdoor shower and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains.
The house sits on the edge of town and is a short walk to Marathon where you will find the historic Gage Hotel with its famous restaurant and White Buffalo Bar. Marathon also has a great little bookstore where you can get the Sunday New York Times. Have breakfast at the Gage Hotel or the Cottonwood Station, or vist the local store, the French Grocer. The gate to Big Bend Park is a beautiful 76 mile drive from Marathon. You can spend the day in Big Bend hiking, river rafting, birdwatching, etc. Drive to Marfa for the world class art scene or visit the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis. |
