Built in 1915 and completely renovated in 1999, this was the home of Mary and Bill Buchanan. The rooms are named for the four daughters, Clarice, Eleanor, Adele and LaVaun. Mr. Buck, as he was called, came to the area as a teacher and later became train master, postmaster, notary, Western Union operator, and manager of a general store at the Green Cove Station, 100 yards from the house.
The Station is now maintained by the Forest Service and is a step back in time, looking much the way it did from its opening in 1914 until the 70's, with the pot belly stove carrying many stains of tobacco juice and is the silent harbinger of thousands of tales told while the locals waited for the mail brought by the N&W Virginia Creeper Train. Mary kept her daughters and anyone in sight busy putting together lunches for the N&W passengers and crew, or perhaps caring for strangers that were snowed in and filling every available bit of floor space.
The Virginia Creeper Trail, a Rails to Trails, runs through the property, and provides beautiful vistas for bikers, hikers, and family members of all ages.
The Buchanan Inn is the perfect place to get away and enjoy the beautiful mountains, even viewing the intersection of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee in the distance.
