We welcome you to Harwood House, a southern Maryland farmhouse located in Harwood, Maryland. For more than a decade, it has been a wonderful place to raise our children. We have also hosted many gatherings: Native American shamans such as Lench; contemporary commentators and authors, including John Perkins; educators and cinematographers, including Academy Award winner Gabriela Christiani. We were married under the majestic, ancient linden tree on the lawn. Now we have been inspired to share our home with you.
You will find a peaceful retreat from the world at Harwood House. We are located on nearly 8 acres, a tree farm. Our woods are filled with many beautiful specimen trees including walnuts, oaks, maples and hornbeam. Maryland’s second largest European linden (registered with the Maryland Big Tree Program) graces our grounds. Beneath it, one feels a powerful connection with nature; it’s been dubbed the “Grandfather Tree” by one shaman because the animals seem to respect it.
Those animals that frequent our woods range from birds (including our resident Swainton’s hawk, owls and wild turkey) to deer, raccoon, foxes and other wildlife. Peaceful outdoor spaces abound. Sitting in the gazebo, on the lawn, under the linden, on the flagstone patio by the fountain brings one calm and creates space for reflection and profound inspiration. A fire pit with patio is available for outdoor gatherings weather permitting.
Inside, you will find sleeping space for 10, with a variety of room arrangements. We offer two queen bedrooms en suite, including spacious baths with soaking tub, steam shower, and sitting room. The “dorm” functions as sleeping space for 3 with a sitting room, or sleeping space for 4 using the daybed in the sitting room. There is an additional bedroom with 2 twin beds that shares a bath with the “dorm”. Our spacious library is available for meeting or gathering space and includes a working fireplace. The parlor, a more intimate room, also has a working fireplace. The formal dining room comfortably accommodates twelve for seated dinners, and works beautifully for buffets of any size.
A modern kitchen, butler’s pantry, and small sun-room complete the facilities at Harwood House. Gourmet cooking and lessons are available from a trained chef.
